CLINKS BLOG: HMI Probation report into probation supply chains
HMI Probation have published their report of a thematic inspection into probation supply chains. In this blog, Clinks, Head of Policy, Jess Mullen summarises the key points from the report with regards to the extent of the voluntary sectors involvement in supply chains and the quality of the provision provided by supply chains. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: young and homeless
Homeless Link has published its latest Young and Homeless report, funded by Land Aid and Comic Relief. The top three support needs of the young people that participated in the research were: not being in education employment or training (44%), a lack of independent living skills (41%) and mental health problems (35%). Despite the prevalence of mental health issues, 63% of respondents said there were significant barriers to young people accessing mental health services. Read the report here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: behaviour that challenges
A report jointly published by the Prison Reform Trust and University of Leeds called 'Behaviour that challenges', examines sexual offending amongst people with learning disabilities and/or autism. It looks at the challenges faced both by the individuals themselves and the professionals and practitioners who work with them, suggesting practical ways forward and recommendations for improving outcomes. The report explores why people with learning disabilities and/or autism may get into trouble over an alleged sexual offence, which may include a lack of opportunity for appropriate sexual expression; limited knowledge about sex and sexuality; and cognitive distortions or poor understanding of the social sanctions attached to sexual offending. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: legal walk
The Howard League for Penal Reform is seeking people to join their team at the annual London Legal Walk on Monday 21st May 2018. The London Legal Walk is the largest gathering of legal professionals in the UK, all walking with friends, members and colleagues supporting access to justice. The Howard League is walking to raise funds for its legal team. Participants will have the chance to meet the team and find out more about their work. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: men affected by substance misuse
Adfam has a guide for men coping with a family member's addiction. Men often feel uncomfortable accessing certain types of support, or think that services aren't able to meet their needs. This booklet is designed especially for men and contains real-life stories and key information on dealing with someone else's drug or alcohol use. This is part of the 'Journeys' series of resources which Adfam has updated with the latest information. Read the booklet here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: transforming rehabilitation
HMI Probation has released a thematic report on supply chains which finds that “Probation reforms have failed to deliver the aim of ensuring that voluntary and third sector organisations play a central role in providing specialist support to offenders, according to Dame Glenys Stacey, HM Chief Inspector of Probation”. Clinks forthcoming third and final report of the trackTR project will include further detail on the experiences of 132 organisations, the impact on those who need their services and what needs to change. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: changing lives
HMPPS has launched campaign 'Changing Lives Together', which aims to recognise the many ways that organisations help people within the criminal justice system to change. It will be sharing its own stories through social media and wants voluntary organisations to get involved. There is a toolkit to support this work. Find out more here
FUNDING: women's voices
Rosa has launched the third round of its grants programme ‘Voices from the Front Line’ which supports women’s organisations to shine a light on their fight for gender equality in the UK. It offers funding from £300 to £3000 to support charitable advocacy work across Rosa’s four pillars of leadership and representation, safety, health and economic justice. The deadline for applications is 29th May. Find out more here
FUNDING: reaching communities
The Big Lottery Fund Reaching Communities has grants of over £10,000 in England, to voluntary and community organisations or social enterprises for up to five years. It can fund project activities, operating costs, organisational development and capital costs. It support ideas that meet three funding priorities: bring people together and build strong relationships in and across communities; improve the places and spaces that matter to communities; and that enable more people to fulfil their potential by working to address issues at the earliest possible stage. The Nelson Trust is holding its Annual Conference [21st June, details tbc] ‘From SWOP to EXIT - Approaches to transcending street sex work and addiction’. This event will explore and advocate for systemic changes in approaches to street based sex work and addiction. This event is aimed at statutory and voluntary services, community based street sex worker and addiction services, health and social work professionals.
