CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: reading in prison appeal
Journalist and TV news presenter Cathy Newman will be presenting an appeal for The Shannon Trust on Radio 4 on Sunday 8th April. She’ll explain how the charity’s peer mentored Reading Plan works for people in prison, and how reading opens doors to education, training and support, and how it helps keep families connected. To hear the appeal, tune into Radio 4 on Sunday 8th April at 07:54 or 21:26 or on Thursday 12th April at 15.27. Listeners can then donate to the appeal here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: homelessness services
Homeless Link has published its annual review of homelessness services in England. It gives an overview of changing demand for these services, funding and provision, and examines topical issues faced by the sector. It finds that in 2017, a total of 4,751 people were estimated to be sleeping rough in England on any given night, which represents an increase of 15% since 2016. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: use of remand
Transform Justice has published a report on the overuse of remand. Of the 22,300 defendants who are both remanded and tried in magistrates’ courts, 25% are acquitted and 33% get a non-custodial sentence. Over half of all those imprisoned on remand are accused of non-violent offences. This report suggests that changes to police, court and probation practices could reduce the unnecessary use of remand in custody. Read the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation services
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ), Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation (HMIP) have published a memorandum of understanding 'Memorandum of Understanding for the Arrangements for the Oversight of Probation Services in England and Wales'. It sets out how the key roles and responsibilities of these three bodies interact in oversight of probation services. This is in light of recent changes to the inspection arrangements that will take place from April 2018, such as ratings of each National Probation service division and each Community Rehabilitation Company. In the long-term MoJ, HMPPS and HMIP would like the level of oversight of probation to be decided based on where it is deemed most necessary. Find out more here

This pan-European conference, hosted in partnership with Children of Prisoners Europe (COPE), will highlight recent milestones in public policy and the growing evidence base for a fundamental change in approach to ‘maintaining’ child-parent relationships. The conference will also explore developments in technology to support child-parent relationships and tackle what ‘progress’ looks like within the sphere of public perception and media attitudes.
