CLINKS VACANCY: Clinks seeks new Chair

We are seeking a new Chair to lead Clinks and our experienced and knowledgeable Board of Trustees [non remunerated, London, two days a month]. The Clinks Chair will provide leadership to the Board and staff, ensuring our strengths and skills are co-ordinated in order to build on Clinks success into the future. You will have experience in how to govern a charity and be able to build and motivate teams around a strong set of shared values. With experience of supporting and coaching fellow Board members and/or managers you are able to motivate people to create and sustain change. You will have experience of criminal justice and knowledge of voluntary sector infrastructure organisations, and a willingness to keep abreast of developments in the criminal justice system and voluntary sector. CLINKS BLOG: gender, race and intersectionality

Whitney Iles, CEO of Project 507, writes on issues around representation and voice in women centred aspects of the voluntary sector. She writes '...we must ensure that within women-centred spaces other identifying factors such as race and ethnicity do not become an afterthought. We must understand that in order to have an inclusive process, it is not enough to just include women, we must include women that represent a wide range of communities and perspectives.' Continuing our series of blogs about Social Interest Bonds (SIBs), Nigel Ball from Government Outcome Labs responds to a previous blog from Laura Seebohm, and discusses his take on how they can be used by the voluntary sector. CLINKS EVENT: criminal justice forum

Clinks event: The Regional Criminal Justice Forum postponed from 1st March, is now being held on the 11th May. 'Co-ordination and collaboration for people facing multiple disadvantage' [11th May, Exeter, Free to members /£50] discusses how criminal justice services and others can join up their work to better meet people’s multiple and complex needs. Speakers include Rob Fenwick, South West custodial commissioning lead at Ministry of Justice and Isabel Livingstone, Clinks Development Officer and MEAM Partnerships Manager. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: ending short sentences

Revolving Doors has begun a campaign to end short prison sentences. It commissioned a poll which found that four out of five people did not think a prison sentence was appropriate in such cases as shoplifting of essentials like food or nappies. Currently 30,000 people each year go to prison on sentences of less than six months. This represents half of all people sent to prison to serve a sentence. Revolving Doors is calling on the Government to introduce a presumption against the use of short custodial sentences of less than six months, requiring the court to only impose such a sentence if no other appropriate disposal is available and to record publicly the reason for a custodial sentence. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: recovery and families

Adfam and Sheffield Hallam University has published a study entitled ‘Understanding recovery from a family perspective: a survey of life in recovery for families.’ The report is a large scale study into the impact of recovery from drug and alcohol dependence on family members. This report highlights the toll that addiction exerts not only on individual drinkers but on those around them, and it establishes the importance of recovery in mitigating some of these adverse effects. One finding was that 3.4% of respondents served prison time while their family member was in active use, compared to 1.2% when they were in recovery. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: a woman-centred approach 

The Centre for Social Justice launched a report with Dr Phillip Lee MP, the Minister for Female Offenders, setting out ten recommendations to tackle the root causes of female offending behaviour, including: redirecting funding from prison-building to community-based services, a greater role for Police and Crime Commissioners, and calling for a more local trauma-informed approach. Coaching Inside and Out (CIAO) is seeking people who coach those who are socially excluded to add themselves to a global database and submit an evaluation of coaching's effectiveness. It is exploring who uses coaching internationally. Organisations can add themselves to a global database and submit evaluations of coaching’s effectiveness in any context. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Community Rehabilitation Companies

The Public Accounts Committee has released its report on government contracts for Community Rehabilitation Companies. The findings include that the Ministry has still not delivered on its commitment to ensure that the third sector can help improve rehabilitation services. Clinks’ CEO, Anne Fox, says: “We welcome the specific focus in the recommendations from the PAC on the voluntary sector’s engagement or otherwise in probation services under TR.  The report concurs with Clinks’ consistent findings since the introduction of the reforms that the sector, whilst expert and experienced in supporting people to desist from crime through provision of quality services, has been shut out in the most part and not given a proper role to play in many local probation services.  We look forward to working with the MOJ, HMPPS and with the sector to inform future negotiations to improve the quality of services and the outcomes they can help people achieve”. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: incentivising youth behaviour

HM Inspectorate of Prisons has published a new thematic report entitled ‘Incentivising and promoting good behaviour’ which is based on a review commissioned by the Youth Justice Board and focusing on children held in secure training centres (STCs) and young offender institutions (YOIs), and young adults aged 18–20 held in YOIs. Inspectors found that “far too often the rewards and sanctions associated with behaviour management schemes were focused on punishment rather than incentive, and were prone to generate perceptions of favouritism. Too often, during inspections, we have seen rewards and sanctions schemes that are overwhelmingly punitive, and the response to poor behaviour is to become locked in a negative cycle of ever greater restriction.” Find out more here

VOLUNTARY SECTOR NEWS: charities in the sector

The Association of Charitable Foundation Criminal Justice Network has launched a survey for charities working in the criminal justice system to help them identify thematic gaps in funding and for professionals to input on the role that foundations should take to strengthen the sector and better support delivery organisations. The results of the survey will be published and can be sent to those who take part if requested. The deadline to complete the survey is 30th March. Take the survey here

FUNDING: young people and people with convictions

The 1772 Charity Debtors Relief Funds Charity is seeking applications for the award of small grants (up to £2000). Their main objective is the support of young people at risk, the relief of people with convictions and their dependents, and other related purposes. The deadline for applications is 6th April and should be submitted via email to secretary.1772charity@gmail.com

FUNDING: unpaid carers and the criminal justice system

The Triangle Trust provides funding through its Development Grants programme twice a year to registered charities, not-for-profit social enterprises and community interest companies in the UK whose primary purpose is to support unpaid carers (spring round) and the rehabilitation of prisoners or ex-prisoners (autumn round). Grants are available for up to £80,000 over three years with a maximum of £35,000 in year one. The deadline for applications to the spring round is 3rd May. Find out more here

FUNDING: start your project

The School for Social Entrepreneurs are seeking applications for support to start up and scale social enterprises, charities, community projects and impact-led organisations. Support includes learning programmes and grants for the Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland Social Entrepreneurs Programme run in partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs and the Big Lottery Fund. The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is holding ‘We need to talk about women’ [17th April, Bristol, free], with guest speaker Sonia Crozier, Executive Director for Probation and Women at HM Prison and Probation Service. In this seminar Sonia will set out how prisons and probation can work together with this particular group affected by the criminal justice system. Find out more and book here

CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: tackling sexual abuse

StopSO is holding its 2018 Conference ‘Tackling Sexual Abuse in the 21st Century' [2nd May, London, from £75]. This conference will allow you to get a first-hand account, from people who are directly involved with sexual offences. Through these conversations and presentations, delegates will get a direct understanding of the core issues. Speakers include Chief Constable Simon Bailey, the National Police Chiefs’ Lead for Child Protection. OPPORTUNITY: probation

The 3rd Annual Probation Practitioner Conference [2nd July, London, cost tbc], led by the Probation Institute in partnership with the National Probation Service and the Community Rehabilitation Companies is looking to facilitating interactive workshops to enable attendees to share ideas and learn alongside fellow professionals. It is seeking Expressions of Interest to run workshops at this year’s conference. The workshop sessions will last approximately one hour and will share innovative practice, research outcomes and professional development with colleagues throughout the sector.
