CLINKS RESEARCH: older people

Are you a voluntary organisation working with people with convictions aged over 50? If yes, we’d like to hear your experiences and views. Clinks is carrying out a rapid research project to get a snapshot of current voluntary sector work with or for older people in the criminal justice system, aiming to identify priorities and ideas for future developments. The findings will be published in June 2018. The researcher is Tim Robertson (formerly of the Koestler Trust). CLINKS NEWS: commissioning and probation for women

The Reducing Re-Offending Third Sector (RR3) special interest group, the Women’s Networking Forum met on 20th February to discuss commissioning and probation. It discussed barriers to commissioning for the right outcomes, such as written bids for funding being time-consuming to submit and not giving commissioners an accurate picture of what organisations do. The group advocated more grant funding and suggested commissioners attend “taster days” where they experience service users’ journeys and what the organisations they fund do. The group also discussed how the voluntary sector can contribute towards ‘good’ probation, through sharing expertise in what works with the statutory sector and providing holistic, long-term support, based on strong relationships with clients who self-refer. NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE: Anne Peaker lectures

The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) is screening an excerpt of the acclaimed documentary made by a former prisoner, Injustice, at their annual Anne Peaker lecture [27th March, Canterbury, £10]. The screening will be followed by a panel featuring the director and arts in criminal justice organisations to discuss: what can be learned when prisoners have agency over their story? And how can the arts and criminal justice sector facilitate this? There will be refreshments and a chance to network and meet members of the NCJAA Steering Group. Find out more and book here

NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE: join the steering group

Voting is now open for the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance’s (NCJAA) 2018 Steering Group elections. This year, there is one space available on the Steering Group and three candidates standing. The Steering Group are vital to the work of the NCJAA and represent the wider membership by supporting their work plan, setting priorities, agreeing the budget and responding to changes in government policy in relation to arts and criminal justice. CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: life beyond crime

'Life Beyond Crime: What do those at risk of offending, prisoners and ex-offenders need to learn?' is a book published by Paul Crane and Gerard Lemos featuring the answers to the same question set by a fellowship, established by the Monument Trust. The fellowship is made up of several voluntary sector organisations, including Clinks, who each submitted an answer. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: managing conflict

Leap Confronting Conflict is taking nominations for its annual awards- Lighting the Fire. The awards celebrate the young people, professionals and organisations that excel at managing conflict. There are three award categories: Young Leader (11-25 years old); Inspirational Adult; and Project or Organisation. Nominees are welcome from a variety of places including schools, children's homes, prisons, youth groups or the wider community. The deadline for nominations is 14th April. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: home detention curfew

Ryan Harman, Advice and Info Service Manager for The Prison Reform Trust, has published an article in the latest edition of Inside Time explaining the eligibility criteria and process for Home Detention Curfew (HDC). HDC is a scheme which allows some people to be released from custody early to a suitable address, providing they stay there during certain hours – usually a 12-hour period through the night. This is monitored by an electronic tag. Ryan states 'HMPPS are currently trying to improve the procedures for those who are eligible for HDC, and this drive is accompanied by new guidance for prisons... The aims are to make sure that those eligible are identified early, that the process operates without delays and, most importantly, that release on HDC becomes the norm for people who are eligible.' CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: meaningful participation in youth justice services

Beyond Youth Custody has written a blog on an effective practice sharing workshop, held with the Clinks Service User Network, on involving young people in justice services. Staff from Peer Power and Everton in the Community along with a diverse range of stakeholders from youth justice services and young experts were involved in the day. They write 'BYC’s research has found that for resettlement to be sustainable, it is important to look beyond preventing recidivism and create a system that promotes desistence, wellbeing and social inclusion, where the young person feels empowered and is at the centre of decision making. There also needs to be a longer-term understanding of resettlement as a co-created process that involves the young person entirely.' Read the blog here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prison reform

The Secretary of State for Justice, David Gauke, gave his inaugural speech on prison reform at the Royal Society of Arts. Of prison, he said 'I believe its purpose is threefold: First, protection of the public – prison protects the public from the most dangerous and violent individuals. Second, punishment – prison deprives offenders of their liberty and certain freedoms enjoyed by the rest of society and acts as a deterrent. It is not the only sanction available, but it is an important one. And third, rehabilitation – prison provides offenders with the opportunity to reflect on, and take responsibility for, their crimes and prepare them for a law-abiding life when they are released.' CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: women in prison

Public Health England has published new Gender Specific Standards highlighting the need for a system approach to improve the health and wellbeing of women in prison in England. Implementation of these standards is a shared objective for HMPPS, NHS England and PHE.  PHE is aware that the standards are not currently all being met and will not all be achieved overnight. However, they will form a programme of work which aims to improve quality of services and outcomes for women in prison.  Read more and access the standards here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: domestic abuse consultation

The government has launched a consultation on domestic abuse. It will seek views on measures to be included in the government’s draft Domestic Abuse Bill. It is seeking views on both legislative proposals and a package of practical action. The government wants to hear from anyone including: victims and survivors; support organisations; research experts; professionals across policing, criminal justice, health, welfare, and education; and local authorities who deal with these issues every day. FUNDING: HMPPS Innovation grants

HM Prisons and Probation Service (HMPPS) has launched the Innovation grant funding programme for 2018-2020. The programme aims to enable the voluntary sector to contribute to better outcomes for people in Public Sector Prisons, the National Probation Service and Youth Custody Services. Under this grant programme, funding will be available for seven individual grant schemes: Addressing the needs of male and/or female young adults; Strengthening family ties and relationships; A tailored approach for people who may be disadvantaged because of discrimination and/or as a consequence of protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010 or other people with specific and unmet needs; Improving the health and well-being of people with convictions; Valuing volunteers; Improving Safer Custody;  and extending education provision. The deadline for applications is 9th April. The competitions have been launched on the Bravo Portal, to access the competitions providers are required to register and log in to the Bravo Portal. Once you have logged into the Bravo Portal, you will find the competitions along with all documentation on the grants and how to submit proposals under the tab “ITT’s Open to all Suppliers”. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: women with multiple needs

Homeless Link, Shelter and Women's Resource Centre are holding 'Spotlight on supporting women with multiple needs' [28th March, London, free]. This event is for London borough officers, front-line staff and service managers working in London-based homelessness and women's services. The event aims to identify barriers and solutions to the homelessness and women's sectors working together and highlight good practice. Find out more here
