CLINKS EVENT: Charities Act
Alongside Unlock we are running an event to help members prepare for changes to the rules on trustees and senior managers with criminal records [14th March, Manchester | 16th March, London | 16th April, Birmingham | 17th April, Plymouth | £15 members /£30 non-members]. From 1st August 2018, changes to the ‘automatic disqualification’ rules mean that there will be more restrictions on who can run a charity, particularly affecting trustees and certain senior managers, such as CEOs and Chief Finance Officers. This half day workshop will provide you with the information your organisation needs to prepare for these changes. Organisations need to act now to update their recruitment processes to reflect the new rules and understand how they can support anyone involved in the organisation, who will be affected, to apply for a waiver in advance of the changes. This workshop will be delivered by Unlock and is based on Unlock’s guide to the new rules 'Leading Charities with Conviction' and simple easy to use tools which Clinks has supported them to develop. NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE EVENT: Anne Peaker lecture
The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance is holding its annual Anne Peaker lecture [27th March, Canterbury Christ Church University, £10]. The screening will be followed by a panel debate featuring the director and leading specialist arts organisations, with a focus on service user led stories and their representation in the arts. The event will include refreshments and time for networking. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: digital prison visitors’ guides
The Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact), has launched a digital 'Prison Visitors’ Guide' for a number of prisons across England and Wales. The digital guides, which feature an interactive map, offer the most up-to-date information available for visitors on selected prisons in England and Wales, including how to book a visit, dress code, how to stay in contact after the visit, what identification is needed and what items may be brought in for children and babies. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: female Muslim prisoners
Muslim Hands has published research entitled '(In)visibility', on the experiences of female Muslim prisoners. Supported by Barrow Cadbury Trust, the qualitative research captures the often unheard voices of Muslims in women’s prisons and explores the often overlooked intersectionality of gender, faith and ethnicity. Findings indicate that female Muslim prisoners are at risk of discrimination as well as loss of family contact due to cultural notions of shame but are also living with many of the same challenges as women prisoners in general such as experiences of domestic violence and abuse, but often with added cultural complexity. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: demonstrating rehabilitation
Psychological Intelligence Foundation CIC has another round of its structured psychotherapeutic intervention programme available. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: length of criminal records
The Criminal Records Bill has had a second reading in the House of Lords. This Bill proposes to amend the length of time for which an individual may have a criminal record under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. For example, sentences of over four years in prison would become spent four years after the end of the full sentence. When a conviction is spent, it means that person does not need to declare it for most purposes, such as applying for jobs. Sentences over four years are currently never spent. Lord Ramsbotham, President of Unlock, introduced this private member’s bill in the House of Lords. Unlock is a charity that supports people receiving stigma caused by a criminal record.
