CLINKS NEWS: Head of Policy and Communications on secondment
Starting next Monday Clinks’ Head of Policy and Communications, Nathan Dick, will be taking a six month secondment to HM Inspectorate of Probation as their Head of Communications. In the interim Clinks’ Policy Manager, Jessica Mullen, will act up as the Head of Policy; we are also recruiting a new policy officer to make sure we can continue business as usual. Kate Aldous, our Head of Strategic Development, will provide leadership to our communications work during this period alongside our Communications Manager.
CLINKS VACANCY: Policy Officer
We are recruiting a Policy Officer [£25,951, London, full time, six month fixed term] to join our busy policy team and work with us to keep our members informed about criminal justice policy and ensure that the voluntary sector’s knowledge and expertise in rehabilitation and reducing reoffending is represented when policy decisions are made. Key aspects of the role include: desk research to monitor government policy relating to criminal justice, producing policy updates and briefings, and undertaking consultation with our members and stakeholders and drafting reports. CLINKS VACANCY: Communications Manager (parental leave cover)
We are recruiting a Communications Manager [parental leave cover] [£34,538, London, full time 29th January – 11th May] who will be responsible for covering a period in which the Communications Manager will be absent. The post involves managing Clinks’ communications both externally and internally during this period. The post will deliver a range of communications activity including: digital communications, media and public relations, publications, marketing, social media and production of materials. The successful candidate will ensure that Clinks’ communications are professional, clear, effective, and meet the needs of our members and other stakeholders. CLINKS EVENT: grant funding programme
HM Prisons and Probation Service (HMPPS) intend to launch a grant funding programme for 2018-2020. Clinks and HMPPS are holding two information events [6th February, London | 7th February, York, further details tbc] for the voluntary sector to provide further details on the grant programme to organisations who may wish to apply for funding from the programme. The programme will aim to enable the voluntary sector to contribute to better outcomes for offenders in Public Sector Prisons, the National Probation Service and Youth Custody Services. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: drug and alcohol treatment
Adfam, on behalf of the Recovery Partnership, has launched the 2017 state of the drug and alcohol sector report. This report focuses primarily on interviewing key stakeholders and highlighting their experiences in the sector, current concerns and thoughts for the future. Key findings include: The potential of the sector to absorb funding cuts through efficiency savings has been exhausted; service capacity continues to be eroded; only central government intervention will protect the sector from further cuts; service models must continue to evolve; and commissioning capacity and practices remain of great interest and concern. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: arts in criminal justice
Geese Theatre Company's Artistic Director and CEO, Andy Watson, has received an MBE for services to the Arts in the Criminal Justice System, in the New Year Honours List, 2018. Andy said 'This is a wonderful honour for the company, during our 30th year, and we are delighted that the sector is receiving such recognition. Everyone at Geese looks forward to delivering more life-changing theatre in 2018'. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: supporting prisoners
Clean Sheet's Acting Chief Executive Jane Gould has received a British Citizens Award for her work supporting former prisoners into employment. The British Citizen Awards is a ceremony held bi-annually recognising individuals doing extraordinary works in the local community. Jane said 'I am incredibly honoured, grateful and surprised to be receiving the British Citizens Award for charitable work in connection with Clean Sheet and our work to support ex-offenders into employment. This is really due to our fantastic Clean Sheet team, our employers, the prison partners, our volunteers, members, supporters and friends, of whom I am so proud'. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: music in rehabilitation
Good Vibrations has published its annual report. Including infographics and quotations, the report assesses the effectiveness of their music based programs over 2016-2017, including their work in 46 prisons, four secure hospitals and one immigration centre. One participant quoted says 'When people are in prison they’re quite stressed... because they don’t have control... and this music, these particular sounds, take you out of that into a human space and that’s where we kind of solved a lot of problems.' CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: prisoner art
The Koestler Trust Awards are now open. This year’s themed category is ‘Connections’, entries can include a poem, drawing, painting, song or any other Koestler artform using the word ‘Connections’ as a theme. Prizes are between £20 and £100, and also include mentoring opportunities and other benefits. Any current prisoner, client of the National Probation Service or a Community Rehabilitation Company or a Youth Offending Service, or any UK citizen currently imprisoned abroad can enter. The deadline for applications is 13th April. Find out more here

Women in Prison would like your old Christmas cards to recycle as craft projects as part of their work with women prisoners next Christmas. The project lets women turn old cards into new to send to their families. Please send to Women in Prison, Elmfield House, 5 Stockwell Mews, London, SW9 9GX.
FUNDING: women's representation
The third round of Rosa’s Woman to Woman fund is now open. With grants of up to £25,000, local grassroots women’s organisations across the UK will be supported using funds from the ‘Tampon Tax.’ In celebration of the centenary of the women’s right to vote, this round of the Woman to Woman fund will have a renewed focus on leadership and representation and Rosa is are particularly interested in funding work that increases women’s representation, skills building and civic engagement. CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: social housing
The University of Salford is holding 'Social Housing Conference: Fixing the broken market' [January 25th, Manchester, from £50]. The conference will feature experts from across the sector who will explain how the UK can deliver affordable housing to meet growing demand. Britain currently builds 60,000 too few houses a year, with only 6800 built for social rent. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: housing first
Homeless Link is holding 'Housing First National Conference' [28th February, London, from £125]. The event aims to disseminate the learning of what has worked in providing Housing First, what the challenges have been and how they have been overcome, and how to capture and utilise service impact to draw in funding and meet commissioning requirements. The content for the day is designed be relevant to both those already offering a Housing First service and those looking to start one, and will include sessions for providers, commissioners and local partners. OPPORTUNITY: design focused prison projects
Would you be interested in joining a group of creatives working specifically on design projects that run in prison? Teams from Makeright at Central Saint Martins; Making for Change at London College of Fashion and from Manchester Institute of Fashion and also University of Wolverhampton are planning to meet at the end of January (or later) to exchange knowledge about best practice. They are primarily working with or in prison industries, although this invitation is open to any one working in Higher Education or elsewhere engaging on design focused prison projects.
