CLINKS BLOG: the government response to the Lammy Review
The government has responded to David Lammy’s Review which was published in September. Jess Mullen, Clinks Policy Manager, has written a blog which looks at key points from Clinks’ briefing on the review and considers what the government’s response says about these. The Review highlighted key points in the criminal justice system that produce unequal outcomes for black, Asian and minority ethnic people and made 35 recommendations to address this. The government’s response addresses each of David Lammy’s recommendations in turn as well as providing additional information about developments that will impact on this area. Read the blog here
CLINKS EVENT: Involving young people
Clinks is holding ‘Involving young people in youth justice services’ [27th February, Liverpool, from £25]. This meeting of Clinks’ service user involvement managers’ network, in partnership with Beyond Youth Custody, Peer Power and Everton in the Community will explore how we can make sure the voices of young people in youth justice services or at risk of offending are heard and acted on. Share your experiences, ideas, challenges and successes in involving young people in the services you work with, hear from young people and organisations leading the way in best practice, and discuss the latest changes to the youth justice system and policy making. Find out more and book here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE: bursary scheme
The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) has launched a bursary scheme. A lack of funding can be a significant barrier to pursuing creativity. NCJAA's experience is that even small grants can make a big difference to developing talent and improving life chances. To meet this need it is launching the NCJAA bursary scheme for emerging artists with a lived experience of the criminal justice system. These will be small bursaries of £500 open to all members to support their training and development, organisational development, or to develop their specialist criminal justice expertise. Applications will be accepted from 1st February. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: policing children's homes
The Howard League for Penal Reform has published a report on policing children's homes. Police forces receive high call outs to children's homes. The report finds that police take their safeguarding duties extremely seriously, but forces are also spending considerable time and resources dealing with minor issues in children’s homes that could be dealt with internally. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: women facing violence
AVA and Agenda have launched a National Commission which is taking evidence on the issues experienced by women who have faced domestic and/or sexual violence and who have also faced multiple disadvantage (particularly problematic substance use and mental ill health). They are particularly interested in hearing about good practice, current challenges and ideas for improving responses. The deadline for submissions is 9th February. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: reforming prisons
The Secretary of State for Justice, David Lidington, has given a speech on prison reform plans entitled ‘Delivering safer and more secure prisons: the roots to rehabilitation’. In the speech, he sets out plans to ensure prisons are rehabilitative, ensure the safety of prison officers, reduce smuggling and illicit phone use, and improve support for prisoners on release. He says “[Prison's] purpose is to seek to rehabilitate prisoners, to use the time that they spend in custody to make it more likely that, after they’ve been released, they will live law-abiding lives, they will be able to accept their responsibilities as citizens and contribute positively to the community in which they live.’ Read the speech here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: community rehabilitation
The National Audit Office has published the findings of its investigation into changes to Community Rehabilitation Company (CRC) contracts. It finds that the volumes of activity CRCs undertook in the first two years of their contracts were well below the levels expected when the contracts were let, while the number of people supervised was higher. It outlines the adjustments made by the Ministry of Justice to the contracts in 2017 in order to address sustainability concerns raised by the CRCs. Read the report here (PDF)
FUNDING: local community

Funding will support projects or equipment for those in need at the heart of local communities. CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: cultural awareness
