CLINKS RESPONSE: ending homelessness
Clinks submitted a response to Crisis’ call for evidence to inform their campaign to end homelessness. Our response highlights the importance of addressing people’s accommodation needs during their first contact with the criminal justice system; the need for timely resettlement support before people leave prison; and the challenges that remain with recording accurate accommodation outcomes. Our main recommendation is for the Ministry of Justice to develop a cross-departmental accommodation strategy in partnership with the Department for Communities and Local Government and Department of Work and Pensions to ensure people in contact with the criminal justice system are able to secure appropriate, safe accommodation. CLINKS BLOG: the role of the voluntary sector
In this guest blog, Jacob Tas, Chief Executive of Nacro, talks about what changes have been made since Nacro first explored the challenges faced by black, Asian and minority ethnic people in contact with the criminal justice system (CJS). He looks at the recommendations made in the Lammy Review, and how the 35 recommendations could be implemented. He says ‘There are simply too many people from BAME communities in the CJS and the proven negative bias cannot continue. Over 30 years on from Nacro’s call to action on this issue we need to see change.’ This is the sixth blog in a series exploring the Lammy Review. Find out more here
CLINKS PARTNER’S NEWS: response to multiple needs
From November, the Making Every Adult Matter coalition (MEAM), consisting of Clinks, Homeless Link and Mind, will bring together 25 local areas across England to develop coordinated, effective support for people experiencing multiple needs, supported by Big Lottery Fund. In these places, local authorities, statutory agencies and the voluntary sector will work together to transform the lives of people experiencing a combination of homelessness, substance misuse, contact with the criminal justice system and mental ill health. The local areas use a framework called the MEAM Approach to help shape their work and receive support and advice from MEAM coalition staff based across the country. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: criminal justice champion
The Howard League for Penal Reform has celebrated its community awards. Several Clinks members received nominations, including The Nelson Trust and St Giles Trust. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees. The awards celebrate projects which help to keep people out of the criminal justice system, by providing alternative, proportionate, effective and targeted interventions to reduce the risk of reoffending. There were eight categories, including a new award for a criminal justice champion. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: radio awards
National Prison Radio has won a bronze at the ARIAS- national awards for the radio industry. The award was for ‘Best Community Programme’. The judges said the programme ‘headed straight into areas people are reluctant to talk about, but brought very honest, engaging insights into their particular communities, with engaging clever and fresh programming that was unexpected. They both pushed boundaries and educated. The judges felt it was a shame these programmes may not be heard by wider communities’. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: youth custody
Nacro’s Beyond Youth Custody programme has released a new report, ‘Now all I care about is my future – supporting the shift’, which proposes a theory of change for the effective resettlement of young people leaving custody. It recognises that effective and sustainable resettlement facilitates a shift in the way that a young person sees themselves, from an identity that promotes offending to one that promotes a positive contribution to society. The framework highlights how services providers can help guide and facilitate this shift and identifies five key characteristics of all resettlement support that research has consistently shown are crucial to effectiveness and sustainability. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: using HMPPS services online
The Ministry of Justice Digital and Technology team has a survey to help it understand what users really need when using Her Majesties Prison and Probation services featured on the Gov.uk website. They want to hear from you if you are currently working with prisons to market and deliver training and/or education programmes, or are you aspiring to do so. The deadline for submissions is 8th December. Its aim is to turn evidence-based findings into positive online experiences which solve user issues and save time through user-centred design. They are exploring the needs of suppliers working to deliver prison education or training courses/schemes. For example, manual skills, numeracy & literacy, mental health and wellbeing, and creative arts. Take the survey here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: safeguarding children
The Government is consulting on changes to the statutory guidance on working together to safeguard children. This includes replacement of Local Safeguarding Boards with Local Safeguarding Partners; the establishment of a new national Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel and the transfer of responsibility for child death reviews from Local Safeguarding Children Boards to new Child Death Review Partners.
