CLINKS BRIEFING: the Lammy Review

Clinks has published a briefing on the Lammy Review into the treatment of, and outcomes for, black, Asian and minority ethnic people in the criminal justice system. It provides a summary of the Lammy Review’s main findings and recommendations at each stage of an individual’s journey through the criminal justice system, from the point of arrest onwards. It provides commentary and analysis on the potential outcomes of those recommendations as well as providing further suggestions that should be considered by the Ministry of Justice, Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service and criminal justice agencies. It also highlights areas in which the voluntary sector can play a key role in supporting the implementation of the recommendations. Read the briefing here

CLINKS BLOG: BAME people in the police

This is the fifth in a series of blogs reflecting on the Lammy Review. Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire writes about the importance of having black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people in the police force to inspire trust amongst BAME communities. She writes ‘A major factor in whether BAME communities feel confident engaging with policing and criminal justice is the degree to which they feel represented and accepted. If they don’t feel confident, then they are unlikely to trust justice organisations.’ Read the blog here

CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: the role of the prison officer

A joint report on ‘The Role of the Prison Officer’ has been published by The Howard League for Penal Reform, and Community, the trade union representing staff across the justice sector. The report examines the role of prison officers in primarily private prisons. It presents the findings of focus groups and surveys with 27 prison officers working in the private sector for a range of companies. A number of officers working in public-sector prisons also gave evidence to the project. The report calls on private companies, ministers and officials to demonstrate that they value prison officers. They must recognise their staff as professionals, fulfil their potential and ensure that officers are able to build rewarding careers. Read the report here

CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: domestic violence

Respect has published the third edition of its specialist quality standard for work with domestic violence and abuse perpetrators, with a foreword from the Home Office. The standard is an evidence-based, safety-focused framework which identifies good practice and offers guidance for organisations to ensure that they are meeting the needs of service users safely and effectively. Victoria Atkins, Minister for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability, said “Domestic abuse is an abhorrent crime that affects victims, their families and their wider communities…The Respect Standard is crucial in the fight against domestic abuse. It ensures perpetrator interventions are safe and effective in preventing future abuse and in turn allows victims to rebuild their lives.” Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S BLOG: transforming rehabilitation

Russell Webster has published a guest blog written by Jack Cattell of Get the Data, on Transforming Rehabilitation’s (TR) Payment by Results figures for the October to December 2015 cohort. The blog suggests the initial results are encouraging, with a drop of 1.9% on offending rates. It points out that some expectations on Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRCs) are unrealistic, with some having targets set too high whilst some were set too low. It also considers that the results are based on the first three months of launching TR, and that it may take longer before the CRCs have fully embedded their systems. Read the blog here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prisons inspector survey

HM Inspectorate of Prisons is conducting its annual survey of stakeholders. It is interested in understanding how the Inspectorate is perceived from the outside and how well it communicates with various audiences. The survey closes 11th December. Take the survey here

FUNDING: tech for good

Comic Relief has grants of £15,000- £47,000 for not-for-profit organisations to develop their digital products or services. The programme will run for nine months alongside access to dedicated technical expertise and an intensive support programme between July 2018 and March 2019. The deadline for applications is 20th December. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: harmful sexual behaviours

Safer Lives is holding one-day training events on ‘Supporting Clients with Harmful Sexual Behaviours’ with a subsidised rate for Clinks members [18th January, Leeds | 25th January, Manchester, £60]. The course is suitable for front-line staff and their line managers whose work involves supporting the needs of adults or young people who also have a history of sexual convictions or present a risk of sexually harming others. AWARDS: charity governance

The Charity Governance Awards 2018 are now open to recognise and reward charities achieving great governance. The Awards have seven categories each with a £5000 cash prize. The award categories are: board diversity and inclusivity, embracing digital, embracing opportunity and harnessing risk, improving impact and managing turnaround. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has a free digital toolkit for Local Charities Day to help you promote your activities. Local Charities Day is on 15th December and is designed to shine a light on local charities and community groups, and provide a platform for them to promote their work and the benefits they offer to communities.
