CLINKS RESPONSE: supporting women
London Voluntary Sector Council and Clinks have responded to the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee investigation on women offenders. It discusses the main barriers to supporting women in contact with the criminal justice system in London and the difficulties faced by women-centred services providing this support. It puts forward a number of key principles to guide the new Female Offender Service set up by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime. These include supporting the desistance process, focusing on diversion and early intervention and addressing the needs of black, Asian and minority ethnic women. The response also provides case studies, outlining good practice in other areas of England and Wales that could be replicated in London. Read the response here

CLINKS BLOG: after the Lammy Review
In the third of a series of blogs, Conservative Londonwide Assembly Member Shaun Bailey writes about his experiences of the criminal justice system as a black child growing up in London, and how he hopes the Lammy Review will impact change. He writes, 'I watched as many of my peers fell victim to the cycle of poverty, crime and mistreatment by a system with obvious flaws, and became determined to work to end the discrimination against minority communities in the criminal justice system'. Clinks held two roundtable events at both Labour and Conservative Party Conferences, supported by Barrow Cadbury Trust, to discuss the Review’s findings and recommendations. Each week an attendee at one of the roundtables will write about their reflections on the review. Read the blog here

CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: young people
The Transition to Adulthood Alliance has published the final process evaluation of the Transition to Adulthood Pathway initiative. The initiative identified ten points in the criminal justice system where a more rigorous and effective approach for young adults and young people in the transition to adulthood (16-24) can be delivered. The report, from the Policy, Evaluation and Research Unit at Manchester Metropolitan University, highlights the benefits of a distinct approach to young adults in the criminal justice system. It also identifies the important role, skill and resilience of the voluntary sector in supporting young people with complex needs at a time of unprecedented reform and budget constraint. CLINKS PARTNER’S EVENTS: young people affected by exploitation
The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is holding ‘Achieving better outcomes for young people affected by sexual exploitation’ [1st November, Bedfordshire, free]. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: exploring homelessness
Homeless Link has published reports from 10 frontline professionals on an international exchange of knowledge and practice. CLINKS MEMBERS NEWS: young adults with complex needs
The Children’s Society is investigating the experiences of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 who were previously known to children’s social services (as either a child in need or a child on a child protection plan), but are not care leavers. These individuals often lacked support at home as children, experience a number of complex needs and risk factors, and receive little or no support when making their transition into independent adult life. The Children’s Society is seeking to interview young people in depth to understand their interactions with children’s social services, their subsequent experiences as adults, and what might have improved the support they received. If your organisation is interested in participating in the research, contact Iryna.Pona@childrenssociety.org.uk
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: families of prisoners

I truly believe that our work in this area can make a significant difference to the well-being and rehabilitation of our prisoners.' Read the letter here
