CLINKS SURVEY: health and care deadline
There is just one week left to share your views on health and wellbeing for people in contact with the criminal justice system, the services available to them, and priorities for change. Our short survey includes questions about the work you do, the health and wellbeing of your beneficiaries, and how to improve health and care services. Many of the questions have come directly from policy teams at the Department of Health, NHS England and Public Health England. Clinks will use the information you give us to influence key health and justice policy makers. The survey will close on Friday 20th October. Click here to complete the survey
CLINKS BLOG: after the Lammy Review
This is the first in a series of blogs following the roundtables Clinks held at both the Labour and Conservative Party Conferences to discuss the Lammy Review into the treatment of, and outcomes for black, Asian and minority ethnic individuals in the criminal justice system. Members of Parliament, Police and Crime Commissioners and voluntary sector representatives from across the country attended both meetings. Jessica Mullen, Clinks’ Policy Manager discusses how the discussion could impact on the voluntary sector and participants’ ideas on how to ensure race doesn't slip back down the criminal justice agenda. CLINKS EVENT: reducing health inequalities
Clinks is a member of the Health and Wellbeing Alliance which is holding 'Reducing health inequalities amongst inclusion health groups – Defining what works' [3rd November, London, free]. The Health and Wellbeing Alliance is working to bring the voluntary sector’s voice and expertise into national policy making. We want to understand the extent to which organisations across the voluntary and health sectors are already working with inclusion health groups, to learn of good practice models and identify what these organisations are doing to engage with people with lived experience to address inequalities. Experts by experience are encouraged to attend with organisation representatives, and travel expenses will be covered for them. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: support education commissioning
The Prisoner Learning Alliance, an alliance of 23 organisations, has launched a new resource, ‘Greenhouses not Warehouses: commissioning education to plant seeds of hope and opportunity’. This workbook aims to support prison governors and managers as they prepare to have greater autonomy over education commissioning from 2018. The resource was launched at this year’s Prison Governors Association conference and includes a foreword from Prisons Minister, Sam Gyimah MP. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: volunteering hub
Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact) has launched a new Volunteering Hub as part of a campaign to recruit and train volunteers to support prisoners' children and families, and women and men leaving prison. The Hub provides people interested in volunteering with a menu of opportunities, an online application system, and a new single point of contact email address. Andy Keen-Downs, Pact CEO, says 'We have big ambitions to recruit many more volunteers from the diverse communities we serve, and to do this means we will need to provide even more support and recognition for the amazing work they do.' CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: new website
Prisoners Abroad has launched a new website which aims to be a source of information to support British people affected by overseas imprisonment. The new website highlights projects and campaigns, and promotes service user voices through stories, poems, art and feedback. Prisoners Abroad say: “Our website is a major source of information for our service users. It is also a focus point for our donors, supporters, volunteers and staff. The new website encourages people to engage and interact with it as it is more visually engaging and it displays information in a clear and digestible way.” Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: sport and rehabilitation
The Ministry of Justice has commissioned Professor Rosie Meek (Royal Holloway University of London) to lead a review into sport in criminal justice. The review includes a consultation to gauge public opinion on the importance of the role of sport in rehabilitation and resettlement – the online consultation is now open. The review aims to highlight the role of sport in rehabilitation and resettlement in justice and build a model for effective partnerships with community organisations to improve the delivery of programmes for people with convictions. Submit your response here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: challenging discrimination
‘Ethnicity Facts and Figures’ is a government website designed to challenge society to ‘explain or change’ disparities in how people from a variety of different ethnic backgrounds are treated. It contains statistics covering more than 130 topics in areas including the criminal justice system, health, education, and employment. The website will be a permanent resource, with new datasets being added over time. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation inspectorate survey
HM Inspectorate of Probation is seeking feedback from stakeholders via a survey. Feedback on various aspects of its work, such as reports and communications, will enable it to identify potential areas for development and improvement. The survey should only take 15 minutes to complete, and your responses are completely anonymous. The deadline for applications is 31st October. Take the survey here
FUNDING: new process
The Big Lottery Fund has recently changed the application process to the People and Places Programme which funds projects where people and communities are working together and using their strengths to make positive impacts on the things that matter to them the most. It has introduced an initial conversation, either by email or by phone, to discuss the project idea. If the project is a good match for the programme, an application pack will be sent to the group. If the project is not eligible or not a good fit, the Big Lottery Fund’s Advice Team will provide feedback. Grants are available from £10,001 to £500,000. Smaller grants are now via the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme. The old application form will be accepted until 31st October. Find out more and apply here
