CLINKS EVENT: speaker announcement
The programme for the Clinks Annual Conference [2nd November, London, from £70] is now online. We are pleased to announce our keynote speaker is Dame Glenys Stacey, HM Inspector of Probation. Thank you to all our members who submitted a proposal to run a workshop on the ‘resilience’ theme – we really appreciate our members contributing their expertise. At the conference, there will be performances from arts organisations and plenty of time for networking with key voluntary organisations, government officials, and funders. CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: valuing commissioning
The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is holding its 10th Anniversary Conference 'Valuing Commissioning? Commissioning Value?' [15th November, London, free]. The event offers an opportunity to explore the value of commissioning whilst managing ever more complex challenges to deliver better social justice outcomes. Delegates from all sectors will consider how to respond to the commissioning environment more effectively by engaging and empowering service users, communities and policy makers alike. Feedback from this event will also help the Academy determine future areas of focus and support to enable members to meet these challenges and deliver improved social justice outcomes. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: tackling street conflict
Catch22 has partnered with Bristol City Council, Avon and Somerset Police, and Bristol Youth Offending Team to produce a new plan to direct young people in Bristol away from gangs and provide an alternative route where they can feel safe and realise their full potential. The strategy aims to actively identify those most ‘at risk’ of being drawn into gang violence and crime, as well as offering clear routes out of gang behaviour. Gangs and street conflict have been identified as issues that are having a negative impact on many neighbourhoods and communities across Bristol. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: supporting women care leavers
Working Chance has been awarded a High Commendation at the Third Sector Awards 2017 for their work supporting young women care leavers into sustainable employment. The award was in the Breakthrough of the Year category - which recognises charities who have been successful in trying something new or different. Young women leaving care are at a much higher than average risk of coming into contact with the criminal justice system. The scheme takes a preventative approach and has successfully placed over 50 young women care leavers into jobs with mainstream employers. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: award for outstanding work
Switchback, Safe Ground, and Inside Out have all been nominated for the Criminal Justice Alliance Outstanding Organisation award 2017. The awards will give prizes of £4,000 and £2,000 to organisations, and £1,000 to an individual or an organisation who have contributed materially to improving outcomes across the criminal justice pathway, from policing to prisons and probation, in the last 12 months. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: new plans for criminal justice
Secretary of State for Justice David Lidington's full speech from the Conservative party conference is online. In the speech, he emphasised that prisons should be places of rehabilitation, introduced new security measures to prevent drugs entering prions and announced a £64 million investment into the Youth Justice estate. He officially launched the New Futures Network to help people with convictions into employment, and said "(There is) amazing work by charities, from women’s groups to churches to sports clubs to get them to see that there is a better way than going back to a life of crime. I want to see charities and voluntary groups, large and small, play an even stronger role as we move forward with our reforms." Read the speech here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: keeping safe
The Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody (IAP) and a national newspaper for people in prison, Inside Time, have published a report on their collaboration 'Keeping Safe' which was designed to help people in prison at risk of self-harm and suicide. Supported by the Samaritans and Prison Radio, the IAP called on Inside Time readers for their thoughts on how to prevent suicide and self-harm. Prisoners’ recommendations in this report reflect evidence from, and recommendations made by, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, the Chief Coroner and the National Audit Office, amongst others. FUNDING: very small charities
The Yapp charitable trust has grants of up to £3,000 per year, for up to three years, to support the core running costs of very small registered charities in England and Wales working with a range of beneficiary groups. They prioritise work that is unattractive to the general public or unpopular with other funders. Applications are ongoing. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: families and children
Barnardo’s Cymru is delivering 'Hidden Sentence' training at selected prisons [various locations, various dates over October and November, £35]. This is a full-day, prison-based workshop on the impact of parental offending on children and families. The workshop includes a walk-through of the prison visiting process and participatory exercises which encourage participants to understand the experience of people who have a family member in prison. West Yorkshire voluntary organisations are invited to West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) partnership conference [9th November, Halifax, free]. The aim of the conference is to build on existing relationships so that the police and voluntary sector work more closely together to deliver the outcomes in the PCC's Police and Crime Plan. PUBLICATION: youth justice
The National Association for Youth Justice has published 'The State of Youth Justice 2017', a report which discusses the changes in the youth justice system since the publication of the Taylor review in December 2016. It offers an overview of the latest available data on youth crime, alongside how those statistics could be interpreted and used to reduce youth crime in the future. Find out more here
OPPORTUNITY: prison education
Serco is seeking Expressions of Interest from potential delivery partners. Serco is intending to tender for the forthcoming Prison Education Framework opportunity being commissioned by the Ministry of Justice. The provision will involve the delivery of a full range of services, including accredited educational courses and specialist support as appropriate, to learners/service users in custodial settings across England. Their intended delivery approach will involve a range of delivery partners providing services on their behalf. They expect to engage a diverse network of organisations, of both large and small providers, offering both mainstream and specialist education services, either nationally or locally. FEATURED VACANCY: Policy and Public Affairs Officer
Revolving Doors is seeking a Policy and Public Affairs Officer [£22-26,000, London, full time] to play a big role in maximising the effectiveness and impact of their work through a major focus on public affairs. The candidate will ensure they leverage the voices of people with lived experience, along with the organisation’s research and policy functions, to achieve support from national and local decision makers. They will play a key supportive role in shaping and supporting policy work, both at national level and within funded policy projects.They will work closely with the Policy Manager, Director of Policy and Research and the Chief Executive, as well as with colleagues in lived experience and research teams.
