CLINKS BRIEFING: Farmer Review
Clinks has published a briefing on the final report of the Farmer Review. The review looked at the importance of strengthening prisoners’ family ties to prevent reoffending and reduce intergenerational crime. The briefing outlines the key findings and recommendations of the review, which was commissioned by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in 2016 and carried out in partnership with Clinks. Its final report was published in August 2017 and welcomed by the Secretary of State for Justice. The review team, led by Lord Farmer and including Clinks, is currently working with the MoJ to support them in putting together an action plan based on the recommendations outlined in this briefing. CLINKS BRIEFING: drug strategy
Clinks has published a briefing on the Government's Drug Strategy, published in July. The briefing summarises the main aspects of the strategy and indicates what impact the strategy is likely to have on Clinks members. Clinks is supportive of the overall aims of the strategy which focus on both reducing drug use and supporting people in their recovery. However, although the Government recognises that fully funded services are essential for ensuring the aims of the strategy are realised, it is unfortunate that the strategy does not recognise or seek to address the challenging funding environment drug and alcohol misuse services are operating within. CLINKS BLOG: launch of the Farmer Review
In this blog, Oonagh Ryder, Clinks Policy Officer, discusses the launch event for the Farmer Review at the Centre for Social Justice. The event was attended by the Minister for Prisons and Probation, Sam Gyimah, officials from the Ministry of Justice and HM Prisons and Probation Service, and people with experience of the criminal justice system, including ex-prisoners and family members of people in prison. The event looked at policy and at practical examples of how to improve support for family and social ties for people in prison. Read the blog here
CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: multiple needs and political leadership
The Making Every Adult Matter Coalition, of which Clinks is one of the partners, has published 'Multiple needs: time for political leadership'. This publication looks at the government response to multiple needs, and is based on consultation carried out over the summer with experts by experience and frontline practitioners from our local partners. It asks the government to: commit to tackling both the causes and consequences of multiple needs; collaborate across government so every department is working together to address multiple needs; challenge local areas through setting a clear expectation that every local area must take effective action to support people with multiple needs; and invest by making sure flexible funding is available that encourages services to work together and allows them to respond to local needs. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: partnership for gender equity
Lancashire Women’s Centres and the Young Women's Movement Scotland have been chosen by American Band Bon Iver to partner with them during their forthcoming UK tour (taking place next week in Blackpool 25th September and Edinburgh 27th and 28th September). The charities will partner with the Bon Iver '2 a Billion' campaign, which is focussed upon gender equity, and will benefit from a donation of exclusive fan merchandise to support the fundraising efforts of the organisations, which includes tickets and exclusive merchandise for the shows. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: children with imprisoned parents
The Prison Reform Trust and Families Outside have put out a call for evidence on the impact on children when a mother goes to prison. The final report will make recommendations for good practice so that the best interests of children are considered at all stages of the criminal justice system. They would like to include the views of as many children and young people as possible. If you are working with children or young people (up to the age of 21) who have experience of a mother in the criminal justice system, they want to hear from you. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: merging to support families
Pact is merging with Send Family Link who provide services and support for families visiting women in custody at HMP Send. Andy Keen-Downs, Pact CEO said "Send Family Link has been a beacon of excellence and has provided caring, effective services for over two decades, which we will work hard to sustain in spite of a challenging reduction in statutory funding. We are delighted to welcome a great team of staff and volunteers to Pact, where we hope they will be happy and have opportunities to develop and link up with like-minded colleagues in the South East and nationally within the women’s prisons." CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prison education
The Ministry of Justice and HM Prisons and Probation Service (HMPPS) have released a prior information notice for prison education contracts. When the current contracts come to an end next year, they will be putting in place a new framework which will include a much wider variety of organisations. The purpose of this framework is to allow governors within HMPPS to contract with organisations in order to deliver education services within a specified number of locations under their mandate. This opportunity is not solely for large, national companies, and they hope to see local businesses, small/medium enterprises, and charities well represented. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S OPPORTUNITY: supported housing
Thames Valley Partnership is seeking someone to work on an Associate basis for a scoping study looking at the potential to develop a new supported housing project which would also encompass holistic support. This is a joint Big Lottery project which the Partnership is working on with Chiltern Area Quakers. The study needs to be completed by March 2018, with the possibility of further development work depending on the findings of the report. Find out more here
