CLINKS EVENT: criminal justice forums
Clinks is holding regional Criminal Justice Forums [September 20th, Newcastle | September 27th, Preston | October 5th, Plymouth | from £15] to provide an opportunity for members to keep up to speed on new developments in criminal justice. These events allow you to step back from your crucial day-to-day frontline work to see the bigger picture and context in which you are working. The forums will give local and regional organisations the opportunity to hear the latest national developments in criminal justice, and also use their experience to inform Clinks’ national policy work. We do not want cost to be a barrier to our members so please email events@clinks.org if costs are prohibitive. Find out more and book here
CLINKS EVENT: women's networking forum
Clinks is holding a Women's Networking Forum [September 21st, South Shields, from £15] with Women’s Resource Centre and Agenda for voluntary sector organisations offering specialist services for women in the criminal justice system. These meetings provide an update on policy developments from Clinks, Women’s Resource Centre, Agenda and other women’s organisations. You will have the opportunity to network and discuss key issues with other organisations and enable Clinks to represent you to government and other key stakeholders. This includes the Advisory Board for Female Offenders hosted by the Ministry of Justice, and the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3) which Clinks chairs. Find out more and book here
CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: young adults in prison
Transition to Adulthood (T2A) has published a summary of the Ministry of Justice statistics on the number of young adults in prison and serving community sentences. It finds a dramatic fall in the numbers, with community sentences for young adults down by 40% in 5 years, and a 31% drop in the number of young adults in prison aged 18-24 between 30th June 2011 and 30th June 2017. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: mothers in prison
An evalutation conducted at Cardiff University has examined the impact of the Visiting Mum scheme - led by Prison Advice and Care Trust and Sova - which assists Welsh children with visiting their mothers in prison. With no women-only prisons in Wales, female prisoners from South Wales are incarcerated at HMP Eastwood Park, Gloucestershire. Volunteers work with families to prepare carers and children for visiting Eastwood Park and transporting them to the prison. The scheme, which has worked with 97 mothers and 164 children, was found to improve the mental and physical health of the children, reduce their anxiety and help children to feel less intimidated by the prison environment. CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: awards for prisoner rehabilitation
This year's Robin Corbett Award for Prisoner Rehabilitation, administered by Prison Reform Trust, has been launched to celebrate outstanding rehabilitative work with prisoners done by a charity or community group. The top prize has been increased this year to £5000. Nominations are invited from prison governors and directors, with the emphasis on work which fosters personal responsibility and calls on people in prison, and people with convictions, to help others through mentoring and similar. The closing date for nominations is 1st December. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: virtual justice
Transform Justice is seeking information via survey about the effect of 'virtual justice' on defendants who may be vulnerable. This includes video link court hearings and telephony. It is aimed primarily at those who have direct experience of working with defendants and/or those convicted, and some experience of witnessing video hearings in action. Findings will inform the development of recommendations to improve policy and practice in relation to virtual justice (video and aural). Take the survey here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: additional imprisonment
The Howard League for Penal Reform has published 'Out of control: Punishment in prison', a report which examines how prisons respond to misbehaviour. The report finds that almost 290,000 additional days of imprisonment were handed down to prisoners during 2016 – a 75% rise in two years. The report calls on England and Wales to follow the example set by Scotland, where the use of additional days of imprisonment as punishment was removed ten years ago. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: prisons, crime and us
In October the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies will be releasing a documentary film called 'Injustice', designed to challenge the public view of prisons and justice and present a case for a social basis for crime. The film was inspired by a chance meeting with an ex-prisoner called Gethin Jones. After Gethin explained his childhood, background, imprisonment, release and return to prison, his experience came to form the basis for the film’s investigation. Watch a trailer and read a blog on the documentary by producer Charlotte Sexauer here

FUNDING: tackling economic disadvantage
Sport England has launched its ‘Tackling Inactivity and Economic Disadvantage Fund’ for sport or physical activity projects working with two lower socio-economic groups: inactive people who are in employment and inactive people who are far less likely to have a steady income, or any income at all. Three grant structures operate ranging from £1000 up to £500,000.
