CLINKS STATEMENT: Lammy Review
Clinks has published a statement in response to the publication of the Lammy Review into the treatment of, and outcomes for, black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals in the criminal justice system. Anne Fox, Clinks' CEO says “For too long we have lived with the knowledge that racial inequality exists in our criminal justice system. We have talked about it but not enough action has been taken. Government must take the opportunity to make real change. We welcome David Lammy’s review and hope that it provides the kick-start we all desperately need to make our justice system more equal and just." Read the statement here
CLINKS NEWS: have loans worked for you?
Clinks is looking for case studies of the successful use of loans and social investment. The voluntary sector working in criminal justice receives a lower level of social investment than the rest of the sector. We want to support the sector to explore whether social investment could help strengthen its sustainability. We’ll publish the case studies and showcase them at events to demonstrate how organisations have used the investment and for what. If you would be interested in providing a case study, please email kate.aldous@clinks.org
CLINKS NEWS: publications list
We have listed our most recent reports, briefings and responses on our latest publication list. Our briefings ensure members stay up to date with the latest relevant policy and legislative developments; and our guides and resources inform your work on topics including service user involvement, volunteering and offender health. CLINKS BLOG: employment and people with convictions
This guest blog by Adriana Paice of The Exceptionals looks at employment for people in the criminal justice system and introduces a new resource helping businesses employ people with convictions by connecting them with relevant organisations who provide training, recruitment and ongoing support. She writes 'There are simply not enough employers actively recruiting ex-offenders. We want to change this disjunct and inspire more businesses to see this community as an overlooked pool of talented people who make for exceptional employees – skilled, committed and driven." Read the blog here
CLINKS BLOG: putting prisoners at the heart of services
In this guest blog Amanda Sherriff from EDP shares five ways she has put service user engagement at the heart of her work at HMP Dartmoor. Amanda is the Voluntary Sector Co-ordinator for Clinks’ Good Prison Project at HMP Dartmoor and HMP Exeter. She writes: 'I am very passionate about service user involvement, so I wanted to ensure my role in promoting and enabling access to the voluntary sector was shaped by the prisoners themselves'. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: black, Asian and minority ethnic women
The Prison Reform Trust has published 'Counted Out', a report on the inequalities experienced by many black, Asian and minority ethnic women in the criminal justice system. The report states that black and mixed ethnicity women are more than twice as likely as white women in the general population to be arrested, and that black women are also more likely than other women to be remanded or sentenced to custody. They are 25% more likely than white women to receive a custodial sentence following a conviction. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: restorative justice

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: impact of cycling
Life Cycle has released its impact report 2016-2017. The report shows what its community cycling projects have achieved. It includes an update on Life Cycle's work at HMP Bristol teaching bike mechanics to prisoners. Lukas, who found himself in prison age 61, says “Being in the bike workshop is the best medicine. You don’t think about your problems as you are concentrating on your work. I know if I’ve done a good job or not. (You) go back to the cell and think about whether the bolt was too tight / not tight enough… In prison you have no control over what happens to you, but in (the workshop) you feel more like a human being.” Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: reducing drug related deaths
Addaction UK, as part of Collective Voice along with the NHS Substance Misuse Provider Alliance, has produced guidance to try and reverse the number of drug related deaths. Recommendations include providing tailored treatment and guarding against the forced reduction or premature removal of treatment in order to meet targets and having clear protocols to manage the risk of overdose. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: treatment of BAME individuals
The Lammy Review into the treatment of, and outcomes for, black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals in the criminal justice system has been published. BAME people make up 25% of the prison population and over 40% of young people in custody, despite being only 14% of the population. MP David Lammy’s review highlights key points in the system which produce unequal outcomes for BAME people and makes clear recommendations for addressing these. It finds BAME people's trust in the system is low, and recommends that robust systems are put in place to ensure fair treatment and restore trust. Find out more here
