CLINKS BLOG: family ties

The importance of family and relationships is the topic of this blog by Clinks Policy Officer Oonagh Ryder. In July 2016, the Ministry of Justice commissioned Lord Farmer, in partnership with Clinks, to lead a review that investigated how engagement with families in the adult male prison estate across England and Wales could reduce reoffending and address intergenerational crime. The blog discusses the results of this review, the importance of family ties in giving hope to prisoners, good practice and the voluntary sector's involvement. Read the blog here

CLINKS NEWS: have loans worked for you?

Clinks is looking for case studies of successful use of loans and social investment. The voluntary sector working in criminal justice receives a lower level of social investment than the rest of the sector. We want to support the sector to explore whether social investment could help strengthen its sustainability. We’ll publish the case studies and showcase them at events to demonstrate how organisations have used the investment and for what. CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: investing in justice

The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is running 'Justice Devolution: delivering better justice through Justice Reinvestment' [13th September, Manchester, free]. Justice Reinvestment (JR) has been promoted by the Justice Committee and advocates for progressive reform as a way of delivering social justice, a more cost effective criminal justice system and better outcomes for society. This seminar will examine the challenges of devolution and present a framework for commissioning and delivering JR at a local level, drawing on lessons from JR in the United States. CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: women's services

Clinks and The Integrated Offender Management (IOM) Cymru Women's Pathfinder Team are holding a 'Women's Services in Wales - Third Sector Consultation Workshop' [15th September, Cardiff, free]. The Integrated Offender Management (IOM) Cymru Women’s Pathfinder was established in 2013, with the aim of improving outcomes relating to women coming into contact with the criminal justice system in Wales by designing and delivering a women-specific, integrated, multi-agency approach. The Women’s Pathfinder Team are now looking to develop a business case to explore the potential for a collaboratively commissioned service delivery model for women who come into contact with the criminal justice system in Wales. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: domestic violence

AVA and Agenda are recruiting up to 15 women (aged 18 and above) to be volunteer peer researchers for a national project aimed at improving services for women affected by abuse and multiple disadvantage. Being a peer researcher will involve talking and listening to women about their experiences of domestic and sexual violence, substance use and mental ill health. The researchers will co-produce a report highlighting women’s experiences and voicing their recommendations for change. The report will influence a new national Commission that is being set up to take evidence and make recommendations for improved policy and practice. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: award for partnership

The National Alliance of Sport for the Desistance of Crime (NASDC) has won the 2017 Beyond Sport award for ‘Best Partnership or Collaboration’. The awards celebrate, support, raise awareness and provide funding for organisations from across the globe that are successfully using sport to promote and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Justin Coleman, Head of the NASDC, added: “We are over the moon to have won on what was a fabulous night celebrating the great work across the world in Sport for Development. We are so proud to be playing an important part in that and humbled to have been recognised among global leaders across the sector.” Find out more here

LandWorks has published this blog on its fourth birthday. LandWorks provides a supported route back into employment via teaching skills based around rural community needs. The blog discusses the work it does to rehabilitate prisoners and former prisoners, the changes that have occurred over the last four years and the essentials of rehabilitation. Read the blog here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Farmer Review published

The Ministry of Justice has published 'The importance of strengthening prisoners' family ties to prevent reoffending and reduce intergenerational crime', the report from a review carried out by Lord Farmer, in partnership with Clinks, which places family ties at the heart of prison reform. The report identifies family as the ‘golden thread’ running through the reforms across the prison estate. It recognises that strengthening ties between prisoners, their family and significant others can help to prevent reoffending and reduce intergenerational crime. Download the report here

FUNDING: homeless young people

Land Aid has grants of up to £75,000 for small-medium sized charities for the refurbishment or creation of bed spaces for homeless young people or at severe risk of homelessness in the UK. FUNDING: preventing hate crime

The second year of the Home Office hate crime community demonstration projects scheme has launched and is open for for grants of up to £50,000. The aim of the scheme is to work with affected communities to fund the development of partnership projects aimed at tackling hate crime. The deadline for applications is 15th September. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: inside peace

Peace Partners are screening 'Inside Peace' at The Mac Theatre [21st September, Birmingham, free]. The film follows the story of four inmates in a Texas penitentiary who embarked on a journey of personal discovery, having had the courage to take a stand for their own self-worth and inner contentment, while living in a harsh prison environment. It follows their journey on their release from prison as they struggled to stay with their newfound positivity when they went back to their lives. Book tickets here

OPPORTUNITY: health professionals advisory group

NHS England is seeking people with lived experience of using, or relevant professional experience of, Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC) to become a Survivor / Public Voice member of the Health and Justice Sexual Assault Referral Centre Stakeholder and Lived Experience Advisory Group. As a member of the group you will be part of an advisory group of health professionals and people with lived experience of SARC services who will work together to improve the involvement of service users in their work. OPPORTUNITY: work experience students

London Metropolitan University is looking for organisations to partner with on its 3rd year Criminology work experience programme. After feedback from both employers and students they have embedded a work experience requirement into all Criminology degrees.
