CLINKS NEWS: Women's Breakout merges into Clinks

Following careful consideration by the Boards of Women’s Breakout and Clinks, alongside consultation with Women’s Breakout members, it has been agreed that Women’s Breakout should merge into Clinks. For the past six years Women’s Breakout has provided a unique and specialised resource for women’s centres working in the criminal justice system. Despite building up a strong network and having considerable success, it has struggled to be viable on its own. Roma Hooper, Chair of Women's Breakout, said "We are delighted that Women’s Breakout has secured its future within Clinks. We believe that the integrity of Clinks and its commitment to strengthening the work of Women’s Breakout will enhance the voice of our women’s centres and continue to support the work being undertaken". CLINKS TRAINING: working in prison

We have a 2 for 1 offer on our popular 'Working and volunteering in prison' training course [*new date* 11th October, Birmingham | 14th August, Taunton | from £75]. It aims to raise awareness of the prison environment and enable voluntary sector staff and volunteers to have meaningful and professional engagement with prisons, in their shared care of those in custody. You will learn about the prison environment and population, reducing reoffending, safe and responsible working, and what to expect in your first month. CLINKS SURVEY: financial resilience

How can we best support your fundraising and income generation? Our most recent state of the sector survey demonstrated that the voluntary sector in criminal justice is more dependent on grants than the sector as a whole. At a time when grants are declining, how can we support you to continue your valuable work? Do generic funding support organisations meet your needs, or would you benefit from more specialist support? Would you like to know more about loans for the voluntary sector? CLINKS BLOG: new member of our Board

Jessica Southgate, the latest addition to Clinks' Board, has written a guest blog for Clinks. Jessica previously sat on the Board of Women’s Breakout since 2014. She highlights the work of Women's Breakout and its members, and the challenges for women's services in the criminal justice system. She has worked in the voluntary sector for over ten years, with expertise in gender-specific and criminal justice services. Read the blog here

CLINKS VACANCY: RR3 advisory group

Clinks is looking for an individual with expertise and experience of providing specialist support to women in contact with the criminal justice system to join the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3). The group meets quarterly with the purpose of building a strong and effective partnership between the voluntary sector and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), providing expertise and voluntary sector representation to the MoJ in relation to their policy developments. CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: voluntary sector resilience

'The voluntary sector in criminal justice - Findings from a two year study' will be a one day conference [6th September, London, free] at which Keele University will be delivering the findings from their study, ‘Voluntary sector adaptation and resilience in the mixed economy of criminal justice’. The event will report on evidence gathered from voluntary sector organisations, commissioners, policy makers, Community Rehabilitation Companies and statutory services across England and Wales about the experiences of voluntary sector organisations working in criminal justice resettlement. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: spotlight on local communities

The Groundwork Community Awards aim to honour the small groups making a big difference to the quality of life in their local areas. The Awards will celebrate and reward groups who often get little recognition and support, and draw attention to the power of doing good together in order to inspire others to organise and get active in their own communities. You can highlight your own achievements or nominate a group you know. Nominations are open until 25th August. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: contributions to criminal justice

The Criminal Justice Alliance Awards 2017 are now open to nominations. The Awards aims to celebrate organisations and individuals who have made a marked contribution to effectiveness, fairness and new models of delivery anywhere across the criminal justice pathway from policing to prisons and probation. Prizes of £4,000 and £2,000 are available for two organisations and a prize of £1,000 is available to an individual to support their work. Entrants must have worked in their field for at least two years. Nominations may be made by the organisations or individuals themselves or by third parties. Entries must be made by 22nd September. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: employment for people with convictions

Mind the Gap, an initiative to help develop employment pathways into the construction industry for people with convictions, would like to hear about your experience of employing people with convictions in order to help shape their work over the next three years. The project, a partnership between Beonsite, Nacro, A Fairer Chance, Bounceback and Mitie Foundation, will also provide employers with the resources, support and training they need to confidently access this talent pool. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: criminalisation of children

'Ending the criminalisation of children in residential care' is a Howard League briefing which provides an overview of drivers behind the disproportionate numbers of children living in children’s homes who come into contact with the criminal justice system. Children aged 16 and 17 living in children’s homes are at least 15 times more likely to be criminalised than other children of the same age. The briefing highlights the difficulties faced by these children, including experiences of abuse, mental health issues and criminalisation over minor incidents. Download the briefing here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: payment by results pilot

The Ministry of Justice has published the final results for cohort 2 of the Social Impact Bond (SIB) Payment by Results Pilot at HMP Peterborough. Under the terms of the SIB, investors are paid according to how successful the intervention is in reducing reconvictions. The intervention aimed to reduce reoffending among prisoners discharged from HMP Peterborough after serving a sentence of less than 12 months. The evaluation finds that the intervention resulted in a 9.02% reduction in the re-conviction rate for the final cohort, reaching the threshold for triggering repayment and therefore demonstrating that the SIB was successful. FUNDING: housing projects in the north

Nationwide's Building Society Community Funding is open to applications from voluntary sector organisations who work in North and East Yorkshire, Cumbria, County Durham, Tees Valley, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. The fund will support projects aimed at providing decent places to live in communities which need it most. Projects need to either support existing living conditions, get people directly into an appropriate home, or indirectly contribute to these goals by challenging existing housing models. Grants of up to £25,000 are available for single organisations and up to £50,000 for group bids. The deadline for applications is 3rd September. Find out more and apply here

FUNDING: community facilities in Wales

The Welsh Government's Community Facilities funding programme is open to applications from community-led voluntary groups, social enterprises and community organisations in Wales. The programme aims to tackle poverty and its effects, increase opportunity, create prosperity for all and develop resilient communities where people are engaged and empowered through the development of community facilities. Small grants of between £5,000 and £25,000 are available, as well as large grants of between £25,001 and £250,000. Groups can apply at any time before 31st March 2018. Find out more and apply here
