CLINKS NEWS: save the date
Save the date for the Clinks Annual Conference 2017 [2nd November, London, price tbc]. The Clinks Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting offers you a chance to hear from key policy and decision makers, and to network with voluntary organisations, government officials, and funders. We will be celebrating the resilience of our members and others in the criminal justice system as well as discuss the changes, challenges and innovations. The day will run from 10.00 – 17.00 and will be held 5 minutes' walk from Holborn station, London. Please put the date in your diary. Early bird tickets will be available to purchase from 7th June when we will also be taking submissions from members who wish to run a session.
CLINKS' EVENT: emerging managers
Clinks has teamed up with the Management Centre to offer a high-energy introduction to new or developing managers in the 'Emerging Managers' programme [August 14th-15th, London, from £300]. Over the course of two days, the programme will cover areas such as developing people, managing for performance and delegation. It will identify the common pitfalls associated with the transition from team member to team manager and help you understand your roles and responsibilities as a manager. Find out more and book here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: families dealing with substance misuse
Barnardo’s i-HOP service have produced a new briefing for professionals working with families of substance misusing people with convictions. Informed by services at HMP Portland, the briefing outlines some of the key statistics around substance misuse amongst people with convictions and then goes on to highlight the ways in which their families may be affected by their involvement in the criminal justice system. Practical tips are offered around how professionals might support families of offenders with drug or alcohol problems. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: meeting mental health need
In this blog, the Prison Reform Trust discuss the latest figures on mental health and learning disability in the justice system, and the continuing rise in incidents of self-harm and self-inflicted deaths in custody. Peter Dawson, Director of the Prison Reform Trust, comments: “We hope all political parties will recommit to the vital task… to provide timely support for people with mental health needs and learning disabilities in contact with criminal justice services, including when appropriate, diversion into healthcare.” Read the blog here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: drug treatment
Russell Webster has written a summary of his research into accessibility of drug treatment in prison. The research focused on opiate using prisoners' experiences of obtaining prescription substitutes. He found that 49% felt the support they were offered wasn't satisfactory. Read the blog here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: preventing deaths of women
The Independent Advisory Panel on deaths in custody has published the results of its rapid evidence collection on preventing the deaths of women in prison. The report makes a number of recommendations for improvements in the community; in prison; mental health; transfer of information; family contact; and preparation for release. Read the report here
FUNDING: multiple disadvantage
The Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales has grants between £10,000 and 325,000 to enable charities in England or Wales to break or prevent the cycle of disadvantage. The Invest Programme’s funding will support longer term core or direct delivery funding for charities which are delivering clear outcomes as a result of their work with people aged 17 years and older who are experiencing multiple disadvantage including involvement with the criminal justice system, homelessness and mental health issues. The deadline for applications is 16th June. Find out more here
FUNDING: armed forces
The Ministry of Defence is currently accepting applications to the Families in Stress part of the Covenant Fund. Grants of between £20,000 and £300,000 are available for programmes of work lasting between two to three years. The funding is for projects that support families of serving personnel who are experiencing a significantly stressful life event and would benefit from intervention from a provider who can offer specialised, localised (or easily accessible) and immediate support. These life events could include: those subject to the criminal justice system, life-changing injury, bereavement, domestic abuse, relationship break-up, or mental health issues. The deadline for application is 26th June. Find out more here
FUNDING: local issues
The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation has published new guidelines for 2017 which include raising the maximum amount available for large grants, hospices, village halls and community centres from £45,000 to £50,000. The Foundation offers funding to established charitable organisations including community interest companies, social enterprises, not-for-profit registered companies and voluntary organisations in the UK that are working to address local issues in areas of extreme urban deprivation, or in remote and fragile rural areas. VOLUNTARY SECTOR: ransomware protection
The Charity Commission has issued advice for charities concerned about ransomware attacks after the large scale attack on the NHS computer systems earlier this month. The Charity Commission encourages all charities to follow protection advice recently issued by the City of London Police and National Cyber Security Centre. The advice includes to install anti-virus software and to regularly update computer systems. Details
PUBLICATION: mental health and deaths in prison
The Joint Committee on Human Rights has published its interim report 'Mental health and deaths in prison'. It makes several recommendations including: a prescribed legal maximum time limit a prisoner can be kept in their cell each day, a legal obligation for the Prison Service to ensure that each young prisoner or adult prisoner with mental health problems has a key worker, and that provision should be made in the Prison Rules to enable people at risk of suicide to make free phone calls to a designated family member or friend. The National Autistic Society has published a guide to autism for police officers and staff. Providing background information about autism, it aims to help police officers and staff meet their responsibilities when coming into contact with children and adults on the autism spectrum.
