CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: NCVO almanac
NCVO has released their 2017 UK Civil Society Almanac. This is the 16th edition of the Almanac, which provides an overview of the voluntary sector’s scope and characteristics, including its finances, workforce, and volunteering. This edition talks about how much there is to be proud of in the voluntary sector, especially as it has been a year with extra challenges. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: domestic abuse
Imagine If is looking for opportunities to take 'You Forgot the Mince', a play and workshop focused on domestic abuse, into prisons. The play is drawn from personal accounts of domestic abuse and draws a portrait of a coercive relationship. Imagine If performed the play and delivered workshops to 134 prisoners in HMP Leeds, New Hall and Wealstun in 2016 to positive feedback. The play and workshop are aimed at prisoners who are serving a sentence for violence or who would benefit from being educated on abuse. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: residential retreat
Chance for Change has a large bunkhouse above Glenridding in the Lake District available for group hire. Chance for Change support disadvantaged young people to experience the outdoors, learn independent living skills and make positive life choices. They will be running their programmes from the bunkhouse for 100 days during 2017— it is available for group hire for the remaining times. There are 18 beds over six rooms, male and female showers, full commercial kitchen, WiFi and meeting facilities. The bunkhouse is close to Striding Edge, Ullswater and is only twenty minutes from the M6 and Penrith train station. The whole bunkhouse is available for £200/night midweek and £250/weekends, which will help support Chance for Change projects. Check availability and book here
CLINKS MEMBERS NEWS: new website
PLIAS Resettlement has launched a new website and logo, designed and built by charity communications agency Social Vision. The new site reflects the new branding, features striking imagery of their staff and service users, and includes information about the work of the organisation, how to make a referral and work with them as a partner. PLIAS Resettlement aims to reduce reoffending by providing support, advice and guidance to people with criminal convictions. They focus on supporting marginalised black, Asian and minority ethnic communities across North and West London, and are based in Brent. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: families living with addiction
Adfam would like to hear from anyone who considers themselves a family member, friend or loved one of a person who uses or is in recovery from alcohol and other drugs. The Families Living with Addiction and Recovery survey is a nationwide survey which will document the lives of family members of people in addiction and recovery. Take the survey here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: workshops sought
The International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) is holding its 19th annual conference [22nd – 27th October, London, from £350]. HM Prisons and Probation Services (HMPPS) is a member of ICPA and is keen to ensure the voluntary sector is represented. HMPPS is encouraging abstracts for presentations and workshops under the theme ‘Innovation in Rehabilitation: Building Better Futures’. They will be supporting the conference, with one day dedicated to presentations, workshops and sessions from England and Wales. FUNDING: young people
Francis C Scott Charitable Trust has grants of up to £4000 to support charitable organisations who are working to enable young people from the most deprived areas of Cumbria and North Lancashire to achieve their potential in life. This includes supporting young people leaving the criminal justice system, tackling youth homelessness, and supporting mental health services. Applications are ongoing. Find out more and apply here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: forgiveness
The Forgiveness Project’s next Forgiveness Conversation 'Forgiveness: Cracking Open The Heart' [17th May, London, £10-15] will examine forgiveness as something which is born out of surrender and the acceptance of loss. Olivier Clerc, an international lecturer and workshop-leader specialising in forgiveness will speak alongside Anne-Marie Cockburn who has her own personal experience of bereavement and forgiveness. Olivier and Anne-Marie will be in conversation with Marina Cantacuzino, Founder of The Forgiveness Project. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: women in prison
'What about the Women?' will be an Academy for Social Justice Commissioning seminar [5th July, Leeds, free]. Sonia Crozier, the Executive Director for Probation and Women at HM Prison and Probation Service, will set out what we know about women in the criminal justice system. She will also share her views on how prisons and probation are working together to address the needs of this often vulnerable group of offenders, to more effectively promote their rehabilitation, whilst keeping their communities safe. CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: working in the justice system
Justice Sector Training is running ‘Preparing for Work in the Justice Sector’, a course which prepares learners for employment or volunteering in the criminal justice system. It aims to introduce them to the professional purpose, principles and priorities of the sector, including ethical practice, risk assessment, safeguarding, rehabilitation and public protection. The organisations it is aimed at are in the private, public and voluntary sector, including probation, prisons, courts, tribunal and prosecution services, forensic science services, fire and rescue, police and immigration services. OFFENDER HEALTH: Health and Wellbeing Alliance
The Department of Health, NHS England and Public Health England have launched their new VCSE Health and Wellbeing Alliance. The Alliance aims to act as a key link between the voluntary sector and the national health system partners, to bring the voice of the sector into national policy making. Clinks and Nacro have been accepted as members of the Alliance for 2017/18, building on our successful membership of the strategic partnership programme, to represent and address the health needs of people in the criminal justice system. Clinks will continue to use this to provide you with up-to-date information on the latest developments in health in the justice system, and ensure our members’ voices are heard. The Howard League for Penal Reform ’s annual awards are now open for nominations. 'Community Awards 2017' will celebrate best practice in diversionary work and champion work in the community that challenges and changes people for the better – be it with children, women, adults, mental health programmes or restorative justice. They are looking for a qualified and experienced Counsellor / Psychotherapist to lead on the development and delivery of all of New Dawn New Day’s counselling services.
