CLINKS NEWS: criminal justice personalisation
Clinks has released a series of videos, in which Clinks' Health and Justice Practice Team Leader & Development Officer Hazel Alcraft interviews Professor Chris Fox from Manchester Metropolitan University about what personalisation means, how it applies to criminal justice, examples of personalisation in practice, and where you can go to find out more. CLINKS VACANCY: support young adults
The Offender Policy Team in the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is interested in seconding voluntary sector expertise to help develop their policy on young adults. The ideal secondee will have a background in delivering or designing services in the young adult age group. The role will be based at the MoJ with flexibility to work from home or outside London. It is expected to last six months. The secondee will remain employed by the organisation from which they are seconded which will be reimbursed at a rate to cover costs within the MoJ grade B or A salary range (£35k to £70k), depending on experience. NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE EVENT: safeguarding training
Join the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance for an interactive safeguarding training session run by Mike Sheath from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation [23rd May, Manchester, early bird tickets £50]. The training will cover carrying out creative practices safely in criminal justice settings, how the artists' role is different to other practitioners, and how to enable creative processes with vulnerable people to keep participants and facilitators safe. It will also cover general safeguarding in criminal justice settings, statutory frameworks and working with people who have committed sexual offences. Find out more and book here

In this blog by Sam Thomas from the Making Every Adult Matter Coalition (MEAM), Sam discusses how people facing multiple disadvantage have been pushed to the extreme margins of UK society, and how the MEAM National Summit plans to tackle ongoing issues surrounding people with multiple needs. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: impact on children of police raids
Pact has released an animation telling the real life story of a child whose home was raided by police. The animation, which was co-created with children and young people who have been affected by the imprisonment of a parent or close family member, is the first in a series which will highlight the trauma and fear that children often experience when their homes are raided by police. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: black, Asian and minority ethnic women
Agenda and Women in Prison have released a report on black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) women in the criminal justice system called 'Double disadvantage'. BAME women interviewed for the report said that they felt they were discriminated against and experienced racism in prison from both staff and other prisoners. The report is based on focus group interviews with women in prison and in the community. It was undertaken to help inform the Lammy Review into racial bias in the criminal justice system. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: youth employment
The Challenge (run by Step Forward) is seeking views on the Government decision that every 16-19 year old student undertaking a college-based technical education route will be entitled to a high quality work placement, lasting between one and three months. The Challenge is keen that proposals are employer-led, ensuring students are highly employable and work ready upon graduation. You can give your views through surveys, workshops and placement hosting. They are particularly interested in speaking with employers in the London, North West and West Midlands regions. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: mental health
The London Assembly Health Committee is conducting an investigation into the mental health needs of people in prison and former prisoners as part of a wider investigation examining what the Mayor can do to support better mental health for all Londoners. It is asking eight questions and would like to hear from organisations and individuals with experience of these issues. The closing date to submit evidence is 31st May. Read more here
FUNDING: rural areas
The NFU Mutual Charitable Trust is open for applications for amounts from £250 upwards. NFU provide grants for projects that strengthen rural areas of the UK, particularly those that educate young people and relieve poverty. Charitable organisations based and working within the UK seeking funding for charitable initiatives in the areas of education, research, social welfare and poverty relief can apply. It is not necessary to be a registered charity to apply. The deadline for applications is 26th May. Find out more here
FUNDING: local London
The Crowdfund London scheme has been launched with the aim of improving local areas in greater London. Applicants could receive up to £50,000 from the Mayor, with the rest of the money needed for the project to be crowdfunded. The project is looking for ideas that show innovation and enterprise and aspire to achieve a wider social good. The deadline for applications is 5th June. Find out more here
FUNDING: gender equality
The Rosa Fund opens the second round of its Voices from the Front Line programme this week, supporting women’s organisations to shine a light on their work on gender equality in the UK, by resourcing advocacy and activists with lived experience of disadvantage. The programme offers grants between £500-£2,000. The deadline for applications is 15th June. Find out more and apply here

This symposium will bring together a diverse range of stakeholders, policymakers and experts to propose pragmatic policy changes to reduce drug-related harms and improve prison outcomes. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: postcards from prison
The Koestler Trust is holding 'Postcards from Prison' [17th May, London, £100], a fundraising event at which 200 original artworks by high-profile artists and artists from prisons across the country will be won by lottery. Artists include Grayson Perry, Anish Kapoor, Harland Miller, Cornelia Parker, Rachel Howard and Gavin Turk alongside postcards created by prisoners. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: former prisoners' art
‘Beyond Bars’ is an arts-festival showcasing the work of former prisoners [31st May, London, free]. Through music, poetry and theatrical performances, this festival aims to challenge the efficacy of punishment today and give voice to the lived experiences of those subjected to it. The event is part of a series of activities from Safe Ground and the Howard League for Penal Reform, and the University of Warwick which aim to raise awareness of prison issues and offer practical recommendations. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: the future of probation
The Probation Institute is holding its 2nd Annual Probation Practitioner Conference [13th June, Sheffield, from £50]. This conference aims to give attendees the opportunity to review the lessons learned over the two years since probation reform and to look at what ways the probation world goes forward. The day will conclude with the 14th Annual Community Justice Portal Lecture to be delivered by Dame Glenys Stacey, the Chief Inspector of Probation, who will draw on the Inspectorate Reports to suggest how probation can advance and improve.
