LIGHT LUNCH NEWS: Easter hiatus
There will be no Light Lunch next week due to the Easter break. Light Lunch will be back as usual on the 21st April.
CLINKS BRIEFING: transgender people
Clinks has published a briefing that outlines the core principles of the Ministry of Justice’s review into the care and management of transgender people in contact with the criminal justice system (CJS), and the new Prison Service Instruction (PS1 17/2016) which it informed. The conclusions from the review and the corresponding PSI represent significant progress in recognising and addressing the needs of transgender people in contact with the CJS. Clinks is pleased to see that there is now a clear acknowledgement of the need to respect each individual within the gender identity they wish to express and increased clarity and transparency around decision-making processes. Read the response here
CLINKS NEWS: speaking to our members
Clinks has a new video online. We asked our members, partners and other stakeholders 'Which Clinks services do you value the most and why?' at our annual conference. The video shows their answers, such as "Clinks give us real insight into what's going on in the UK criminal justice system", and "Clinks sits in that space between Government making policy and on the ground in delivery". Thank you to everyone who took part. Watch the video here
CLINKS NEWS: female offender strategy
Clinks is submitting evidence to the Ministry of Justice to input into their Female Offender Strategy. To inform this we sent out a call for evidence this week to specialist organisations working with women. If you would like further information please contact Oonagh.Ryder@clinks.org
CLINKS NEWS: women's networking forum
The Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Women's Networking Group notes from the January meeting are now online. Nine voluntary sector organisations were represented at the meeting, including the partner organisations. The notes aim to give a brief overview of some of the key issues that were discussed by both partners and attendees, including that organisations felt that there is a lack of recognition by commissioners and some statutory service providers that women have specific, unique needs and the value of gender-specific services is being lost. Find out more and read the notes here
CLINKS BLOG: socially enterprising prisons
In this guest blog Charlotte Burrows, Director of Innovation and Growth at EDP Drug and Alcohol Services, looks at how EDP has developed a ‘socially enterprising prison’ model to support prisoners’ recovery. Charlotte writes "For us, socially enterprising environments are ones which support people to unlock their potential and make positive social changes. Where could this be more important than in a prison?". Read the blog here
CLINKS BLOG: autism in prisons
In this guest blog for World Autism Week Clare Hughes, from the National Autistic Society, discusses how autism accreditation is improving prison standards, and talks about how the training benefits staff and prisoners alike. Clare writes, "Although the exact number of autistic people in prison isn’t known, in HMYOI Feltham last year, they represented 4.5% of the population. Research has found that autistic people represent some of the most vulnerable people in the offender population." Read the blog here
CLINKS EVENT: women in the justice system
Clinks, Women’s Breakout, Women’s Resource Centre and Agenda are hosting the next in a series of networking forums [27th April, London, from £15] for voluntary sector organisations offering specialist services for women in the criminal justice system. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: young people leaving custody
Beyond Youth Custody (BYC) has released a report that highlights key lessons from the Youth in Focus programme, a Big Lottery Fund initiative which supported BYC and 15 voluntary sector projects across the country working with young people leaving custody. The report uses the characteristics identified from five years of BYC’s research as a framework for understanding and describing these lessons - that support for young people should have engagement and participation as a primary focus, and that it should be individually-tailored, continuous and coordinated. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: London gang prevention
Young people who are at risk of becoming involved in gangs and violent crime in south London are being targeted in a new Barnardo’s project called YouTurn, supporting pre-teens and teenagers in Lambeth, Southwark and Croydon to make better life choices. The YouTurn team will work directly with schools, community groups and families with the aim of supporting 1,200 young people including 300 young women. The three-year project is funded with £360,000 from the National Lottery and is based on a successful pilot run by Barnardo’s in Southwark and Lambeth between 2012 and 2015. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: foreign national prisoners
i-HOP has published a new briefing about the children and families of foreign national prisoners. The briefing summarises some of the key statistics regarding the imprisonment of foreign nationals and the impact on the outcomes of their children and families. It highlights the importance of professionals having an understanding of this issue in order to provide culturally sensitive support for families in this position. It also includes an awareness-raising poster, key statistics and examples of existing practice with foreign national prisoners’ families. Find out more and download the briefing here
