CLINKS BLOG: stronger charities for a stronger society
Clinks submitted evidence to House of Lords Select Committee’s inquiry on charities, and now it has published its report ‘Stronger charities for a stronger society’. Nathan Dick, Head of Policy at Clinks, has written a blog summarising the report’s conclusions and how it could directly affect our members. He writes "Submitting evidence to the House of Lords Select Committee’s inquiry on charities gave us the chance to talk Parliament about our members - explaining the vital role of voluntary organisations, describing the barriers that sometimes get in the way, and showing how they can be pulled down". Read the summary here
CLINKS BLOG: what’s new in probation?
In this blog, Clinks Development Officer in the South West Isabel Livingstone shares regional updates from the National Probation Service (NPS) and the Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRCs) that were covered at the recent Clinks policy forum. It includes new commissioning powers for the NPS, reflection on the ‘probation services review’ into CRC contracts and information on new strategic forums in the South West. Read the blog here

Six Fellowships are available for 2017-18, five of which can be on any aspect of the treatment of women in the criminal justice system. The other is being offered in conjunction with the Barrow Cadbury Trust on the treatment of young adult women (those aged between 18 and 25, which may include those in transition between youth and adult systems). The deadline for applications is 12th June. To express an interest, please e-mail the Director Chris Leeson at chris.leeson@thegriffinssociety.org.
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: supporting children of prisoners
Ormiston Families is supporting the children affected by having a family member in prison with its Breaking Barriers outreach service. Outreach workers provide one-to-one support for children and young people (aged 5-16) affected by familial imprisonment. As well helping children and young people cope with separation from a loved one, there is evidence that prisoners who maintain ties with their children are less likely to re-offend, and the children themselves are less likely to become involved in offending behaviour. It is estimated that at any given time up to 200,000 children in the UK are affected by having a parent or close family member in prison. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: new website
Women's Breakout has a new website. The changes and updates on the site are designed to make it easier to navigate and improve the overall look of the site. There is a new case studies section which discusses the needs of the women and the services they received. In time these case studies will be linked to a search facility so that users can search for all the case studies that highlight a particular need. Read more here

Greater Manchester’s Mayor and Police & Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd and the members of the Justice and Rehabilitation Executive are seeking views on the topic of “what works” when considering the needs of people with learning disabilities and difficulties within the criminal justice system. The call for evidence is open to all partners working within the criminal justice system with a view to finding a number of practical ways that multi-agency collaboration can be supported and developed. PUBLICATIONS: charities in criminal justice
NPC has published 'Beyond Bars: Maximising the voluntary sector's contribution in criminal justice'. The publication outlines their findings from research into the role of charities in the criminal justice sector. They found that charities make a unique contribution in this space, but face various challenges to achieving their potential. After exploring these challenges, the report makes suggestions for how funders, commissioners, government, and charities themselves can work to overcome these issues and maximise the voluntary sector’s role in the criminal justice system.
