CLINKS BLOG: what’s happening on the ground in the South West?
Clinks’ Development Office Isabel Livingstone has written a blog looking at ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ in the South West. She writes, “In my role...I hear a lot about what’s happening on the ground in the voluntary sector. In this blog I’m going to share some of that with you as well as what Clinks is currently doing and planning in the region.” Read the blog here
CLINKS EVENT: service user involvement
Are you responsible for service user involvement or want to develop it? Clinks runs a network for people who manage service user involvement in their organisations. The next meeting is in the South West [24th February, Plymouth, £25 members only]. Come and hear from voluntary organisations on how they are involving their service users, and from experts by experience who are now helping to shape services. Share your expertise, ideas and challenges with other Clinks members. Shekinah will speak about how they involve service users who move into staff roles within the organisation; and Gary Wallace, Public Health Specialist at Plymouth City Council will speak about service user involvement in commissioning. NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE: annual meeting
The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) is holding their annual meeting [1st March, London, free]. The meeting will provide an opportunity for our members to come together, learn about the current policy landscape and share good practice in arts and criminal justice. They will also look back at their achievements as a network and elect a new Steering Group who will work collectively to support the work of the Alliance and establish new priorities for the coming year. Book your place here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE NEWS: photography and film in prison
Alison Frater, Chair of the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA), has written a blog looking at the NCJAA 2016 Anne Peaker lecture. The event took place in December last year, with a focus on the use of photography and film in prison settings. Artist Edmund Clark gave the key note speech, which was followed by a lively and engaging panel discussion. Alison writes, "Photography has always held a huge fascination for me. I think this is because it uses both science and arts to reveal the deepest sense of something or someone. The lecture by Edmund Clark was, for me, completely unique. It challenged my way of seeing." CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: reading changes lives
Research from Birmingham City University shows Shannon Trust's Turning Pages reading programme improves reading ability of learners regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, whether or not they had a learning difficulty or dyslexia, or spoke English as an additional language. The programme has helped over 6,000 people in prison learn to read. The report also reinforces the effectiveness of the charity’s ‘by prisoner, for prisoner’ peer mentored approach which sits outside of formal education. Read the report here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: top LGBT employers
Stonewall, the lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) equality charity, has listed four voluntary organisations amongst its Top 100 Employers list: St Mungo’s, Touchstone, Barnardo’s and Victim Support Cymru. The list is compiled from submissions to the Workplace Equality Index. Stonewall’s Alex Gwynne said, "It’s encouraging to see the same four organisations retain their places in the Top 100 this year, with Touchstone and St Mungo’s making significant leaps. Despite facing challenging financial times, these organisations continue to lead by example, demonstrating a true commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and helping their lesbian, gay, bi and trans staff to bring their whole selves to work." CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: helping young people to turn their lives around
Leap has launched its 2017-19 strategy 'Harnessing the transformational power of conflict for a successful future'. Alongside their supporters, partners and funders they aim to help more young people to turn their lives around, become leaders in our society, and make the world a safer place. Over the next three years they will focus on four ecosystems where young people are most likely to struggle with conflict, specifically young people who are in care, not in mainstream education, in local communities demonstrating destructive behaviour, including those in gangs, and those in prison and other institutions in the secure estate. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: evidence on character and crime
'Youth offending: discussing associated character traits and potential interventions' will be an Ambition interactive seminar [6th March, London, free] covering the evidence that certain aspects of character are strongly linked with committing crime. Analysts from the Home Office will explore evidence which suggests that these traits are not necessarily innate, for example they can be affected by negative early-years experiences, nor are these character traits immutable. BLOG: serenity in the lakes
Social Vision's Joe Gardham has written a blog on his experience of visiting Clinks member Chance for Change. He writes, "I’ve just returned from three days in the Lake District with young people’s charity Chance for Change, where I met their staff team and found out what makes them unique in supporting vulnerable young people from cities across the country...[They] are based in a large bunkhouse, just above, Glenridding; and for five months of the year, via referrals from partners across the UK, they accept groups of young (18-28) men and women to undertake a personal journey with them." BLOG: reducing reoffending initiatives
In his latest blog, Russell Webster has put together an infographic to summarise the overall findings of the Justice Data Lab's analysis of 140 reoffending initiatives. The Justice Data Lab was set up in April 2013 to allow any organisation that works with offenders to find out the impact of their service on reoffending. The summary shows that of the 39 interventions demonstrating a statistically significant reduction in reoffending, 22 were delivered by voluntary organisations. Find out more here
