CLINKS NEWS: OBE for our former Director
Clinks is delighted that our former Director, Clive Martin, has been awarded an OBE from the Queen for his services to charity. Clive was the first employee of Clinks, and our Director from 1998- 2015. Congratulations to Clive from all of us here at Clinks. The honours list this year includes over 80 charity professionals, including Dr Katy Emck, founding director of Fine Cell Work and Roma Hooper, founder and chair of Prison Radio Association and co-founder of Radio Feltham. CLINKS NEWS: website review
Clinks is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from organisations to conduct an independent review of our website. We would like to commission a review to provide clear recommendations for how the website might be improved so it better serves our audience and enhances user experience. The review would work with our communications team, website users, Clinks members and stakeholders to audit the content, structure, accessibility, integration and ease of use of our website. The final report must be presented before 31st March 2017. The deadline for EOIs is 16th January. Download the EOI here
CLINKS CASE STUDY: specialist women’s organisations
In this Clinks case study Karen Carter, Criminal Justice Project Manager at Lancashire Women's Centres speaks in detail about the centres, the needs of the women they are working to meet and their experiences of delivering a contract for Cumbria and Lancashire Community Rehabilitation Company. “It’s not easy, but you’ve got to work with what you’ve got, and it’s the women who are important, at the end of it” says Karen. This is the third in a series of Clinks case studies that explore the impact of financial and policy changes on specialist women’s organisations. Read the case study here
CLINKS BLOG: support for people leaving prison
This blog from Clinks Senior Policy Officer, Nicola Drinkwater, looks at some of the key findings and recommendations from the Work and Pensions Select Committee inquiry into the housing and employment support available for people on their release from prison. Clinks, alongside members Unlock, Working Chance, Revolving Doors Agency and people with lived experience of the Criminal Justice System, gave oral evidence to the committee in September. The committee has responded to many of the issues we, and our members, raised. Read the blog here

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced candidate to join our respected Clinks team. You will take a lead role in marketing Clinks' products and services; administering and developing our membership scheme; maintaining and improving our database and web-based functionality; and support the development of an annual programme of training and events which reflects the sector’s needs. NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE NEWS: annual member survey
Every year the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance runs a member survey to find out if the work they undertake fits what is needed by their members and the wider sector. They would be incredibly grateful if you could spare five minutes to answer questions on various aspects of their work, and share your thoughts on the arts and criminal justice sector more widely. Do you work with women in the Criminal Justice System? Clinks, Women’s Breakout, Women’s Resource Centre and Agenda are hosting a networking forum [17th January, Wales, free] for voluntary sector organisations working with women in the Criminal Justice System. The meeting will provide an update on policy developments from these and other women’s organisations and provide the opportunity to network and discuss key issues with other organisations. The forum will help enable Clinks to represent you to government and other key stakeholders including the Advisory Board for Female Offenders hosted by the Ministry of Justice, and the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group which Clinks chairs. CLINKS EVENTS: prison inspection criteria
If you were the Chief Inspector of Prisons, what criteria would you use for assessing the treatment and conditions of prisoners? Clinks is holding three consultation events [17th January, London (fully booked) | 19th January, Manchester | 26th January, Cardiff | free] with HM Inspectorate of Prisons so that voluntary organisations can help them review and update the inspection methodology, and the criteria used to inspect, for adult male prisons in the light of the changing prisons landscape. CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: action on suicide
Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM) coalition has responded to the Health Select Committee report on suicide prevention through a short blog. The Committee makes a number of welcome recommendations for action, ahead of the expected publication of a revised Government suicide prevention strategy in the new year. In particular, they call for measures to identify those most at risk in the community, particularly in non-traditional settings where the voluntary sector can play an important role. i-HOP has written a summary of the 'Promoting family ties in the changing Criminal Justice System’ conference, hosted by Clinks and i-HOP on 7th December 2016 in the South West. The conference was attended by around 50 professionals including prison staff, police, civil servants, social services and the education and voluntary sectors. With the link between family ties and reducing re-offending gaining increasing prevalence in the criminal justice debate, the conference was designed to update professionals on recent developments, as well as showcase best practice. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: support for homeless people
Bristol-based youth homelessness charity 1625 Independent People and Deloitte have entered into a three-year partnership. 1625 Independent People (1625ip) has been chosen as the South West region’s Society Partner by staff at Deloitte’s Bristol office, as part of Deloitte UK’s Society Partnerships programme. Jamie Gill, Partnerships Director at 1625ip, said: “We are over the moon about working with Deloitte, we have been supporting young people for over 30 years and know how much more we can achieve with the support of local companies. Coupling Deloitte’s vast business experience and fantastic staff with our youth services expertise will surely result in amazing work and improved outcomes for some of the most vulnerable young people in our cities.” Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: documentary on prison survival
Peace Partners has made a documentary which follows a group of inmates in a Texas prison as they embark on a journey of personal discovery while struggling with society’s roadblocks and dangers. The documentary features the Peace Education Program which teaches people to get in touch with themselves and their inner resources and has been used in some of the toughest maximum security prisons in the US and South Africa. In the UK, the programme has been running at HMP Thameside for over a year with positive feedback from attendees and prison staff. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: encouraging graduates into the prison service
Catch22 has launched Unlocked Graduates, a new scheme to encourage 45 high-flying graduates a year to join the prison service. The scheme is supported by Liz Truss and the Ministry of Justice, and seeks to replicate other successful public sector recruitment initiatives such as Teach First and Frontline, which target graduates to become teachers and social workers respectively. Unlocked will ultimately be an independent charity. Read more hereCRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: new psychoactive substances
HM Inspectorate of Probation is collecting evidence for its thematic inspection on the impact of new psychoactive substances on probation work in the community. The Inspectorate is keen to hear about promising work on the identification, assessment, treatment and management of new psychoactive substances with people being supervised by probation services. The deadline for submissions is 19th January. Read more here
FUNDING: young people into work
The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) has developed a Youth Employment Initiative for the City of Leicester. The aim of the initiative is to support young people who are not in education, employment or training, and help them access the labour market. There is £1.6 million available in funding. The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust is interested in funding work that supports people who address the root causes of conflict and injustice. They are seeking applications which develop and promote sustainable futures and which focus on removing problems through radical solutions, and not simply about making problems easier to live with. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is inviting applications for a share of the £80m Life Chances Fund for organisations working with young people. They are offering payment-by-results contracts for locally developed projects by socially minded investors. The deadline is 31st March, with funding being allocated by summer 2018. PUBLICATION: restorative justice
The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies released Issue 228 of the Prison Service Journal on October 31st 2016. This issue has a focus on restorative justice, discussing its viability and challenges in the current prison landscape. Featuring articles from several prominent authorities, the journal also discusses how restorative justice principles could influence induction and sentence planning, prison work and prisons and the community. HM Inspectorate of Probation has published a joint targeted area inspection of the multi-agency response to abuse and neglect in Wiltshire. The inspection was undertaken by Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, HMI Constabulary and HM Inspectorate of Probation. It finds that organisations across Wiltshire have worked together well to overcome issues that have been raised in inspections conducted by the different inspectorates over the last few years.
