CLINKS NEWS: do you want to be a better manager?
Would you like to be able to manage individual performance and effectively address performance challenges? Would you like to set priorities and monitor results? We’re planning a 2-day training course in London with a highly participative programme run by the Management Centre. We believe in supporting a robust and well-equipped voluntary sector, and would like to offer our members this course to unlock the potential within their teams and strengthen their ability to achieve further success. We are currently looking to gauge interest in the course, for further information and to register your interest please email helen.carter@clinks.org
CLINKS SURVEY: we need to hear your story
It’s vital that as many voluntary organisations as possible respond to Clinks' State of the sector survey - this is your chance to influence policy and practice. Your anonymised responses will contribute to a report which will be shared with our network of 15,000 contacts and sent to key policy decision makers. The information you told us in last year's survey was presented to Ministers at the Ministry of Justice, senior officials at National Offender Management Service, at the Office for Civil Society, in various submissions to Lords and Commons select committees, and to the Government Relations Team at No.10. Please take 25 minutes to evidence the challenges you and your beneficiaries are experiencing and share your successes, so we can advocate on your behalf. The deadline for responses is 16th December. Complete the survey here
CLINKS BLOG: transgender people in the justice system
Clinks' Policy Officer Nicola Drinkwater has written a blog that summarises the key conclusions of a review into the care and management of transgender people in contact with the Criminal Justice System (CJS). The review sought to develop recommendations to shape prison and probation services for transgender people. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has now published conclusions from the review. After engaging with the review process and submitting our own response, it is very positive to see the MoJ and National Offender Management Service respond to the concerns and issues raised by us and other partners. Read the blog here
CLINKS BLOG: grants awarded to support prison reform
National Offender Management Service has announced the latest projects to be awarded grant funding as part of its £1.7 million grant programme to give the voluntary sector an opportunity to work in the six reform prisons to test new approaches. Nathan Dick, Clinks' Head of Policy of Communications, has written a blog providing more detail. The projects cover a wide range of topics, from developing in-cell workout models, art projects for fathers and their children, community food growing enterprises and healthy living courses. Nathan says, "Clinks members tell us that grants remain a vital source of funding, and in many cases voluntary organisations are reliant upon them to do their work." Read the blog here
CLINKS EVENT: families and children of offenders
Clinks, in partnership with i-HOP, is holding a conference [7th December, Taunton, from £25] to support professionals working with the families and children of offenders in the South West. It will provide delegates with both a national and local picture of the changing criminal justice environment in regards to children and families as well as showcasing good practice. The event will be a fantastic opportunity to network with other local organisations, get up to date with the latest policy developments, and hear inspiring examples of best practice. If ticket or travel costs are prohibitive, please contact us at events@clinks.org. Find out more and book here
CLINKS EVENT: substance misuse in prison
What should substance misuse services in prisons be like? Clinks is holding two consultation events [8th December, London | 13th January, Leeds | free] in partnership with NHS England to help them review the service specification for substance misuse services in prisons. Open to current and former service users, families, and voluntary sector representatives, these events will provide an opportunity to feed back on the current specification, what is working well, and what more needs to be done. Find out more and register here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE EVENT: prison life through the lens
How can film and photography change public perception about prison life? This year, the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance's annual Anne Peaker lecture [7th December, London, £10] will focus on the use of photography and film in criminal justice settings. It will look at how different media can reveal life behind prison doors, and how film and photography can be powerful tools for sharing stories. The event will see artist and photographer Edmund Clark share his experience of being the Artist in Residence at HMP Grendon, and how working in the prison has influenced his creative practice. Edmund's lecture will be followed by a panel discussion looking at questions surrounding the use of media in criminal justice settings. Book your place here
CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: perspectives of people with multiple needs
Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM), a coalition of Clinks, Homeless Link and Mind, has published a video exploring 'Walking the Frontline', an exhibition sharing the ideas and perspectives of people with multiple need and those who support them. Since the summer, visitors to Birmingham’s Centre for Voluntary Action (home to BVSC) have had a chance to explore the exhibition, which marked the end of the Voices from the Frontline programme and the beginning of an exciting new chapter in MEAM's influencing work, both funded by Lankelly Chase. Watch the video here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: children and families' experiences
i-Hop is developing a 'Message for Professionals' blog space. They’re looking for contributions from offenders' children and families who want to share thoughts and experiences with the professionals supporting others in similar situations. They are also keen to hear from parents looking to reflect on the impact of their offending on their children. The blogs will be published on the i-Hop website, and promoted to their membership and via Twitter, so as many professionals as possible hear what children and families have to say. Read more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: mental health of young people
Beyond Youth Custody report 'Trauma and young offenders: a review of the research and practice literature' finds that young people in the Criminal Justice System have a disproportionate amount of trauma in their backgrounds, which must be identified and responded to effectively. The report presents findings from a review of the research and practice literature concerning trauma in the backgrounds of young people who offend. It highlights what is currently known about trauma and identifies the importance of this knowledge for effective resettlement practice. Read more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities
What are the challenges faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people in contact with the Criminal Justice System (CJS)? The House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee has launched an inquiry into the effectiveness of government policy in tackling inequalities faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and what areas of public life still include barriers to equality. Clinks will be producing a response to the inquiry, looking at inequalities and specific challenges for Gypsy Roma and Traveller people in contact with the CJS. We are seeking views from organisations with experience and expertise in these issues. To feed into Clinks' response, please contact Oonagh.ryder@clinks.org by Friday 23rd December.

The automatic disqualification of trustees and senior managers with criminal convictions under the Charities Act will no longer be introduced in April 2017 and has been delayed until September 2017.
