CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: excellence in mental health

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: young adults in custody
Prisoners' Education Trust has publish 'Great Expectations: towards better learning outcomes for young people and young adults in custody'. The report looks at the educational opportunities for young people in custody. It makes ten recommendations, starting from the premise that custody should be a last resort and that further reductions in numbers of both young people and young adults in custody needs to be a clear policy goal. Although there have been some reported improvements in resettlement support and hours spent in education for young people once in custody, much more could be done to develop a culture of learning and aspiration. Download the report here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: relationship and parenting
Pact (Prison Advice & Care Trust), the independent national charity which works to reduce re-offending by strengthening relationships, has announced that it is now a ‘Skills for Justice Approved Awards Centre’, following a comprehensive assessment of its practice and quality processes. It has also secured official endorsement and accreditation for three of their relationship and parenting education programmes delivered in prisons under the Skills for Justice Accrediting Learning Professionally quality assurance framework. The programmes are available for delivery inside prisons and can be adapted for delivery in the community. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation work in Kent
HM Inspectorate of Probation has published a report on the effectiveness of probation work in Kent. The inspectorate finds that Community Rehabilitation Company (CRC) responsible for managing low and medium risk offenders in Kent is doing some excellent work, but the National Probation Service (NPS) is struggling due to staff shortages. This contrasts with other areas in England and Wales, where inspectors have so far found the NPS to be generally delivering good work while CRCs are still embedding large-scale organisational change.
