CLINKS EVENT: annual conference and AGM
Clinks is holding its Annual Conference 2016 [2nd November, London, from £50]. This year’s theme is 'What we do'. The conference will focus on the historic and future role of the voluntary sector in supporting people to change their lives, in reforming the system, in making communities safer, and in improving conditions in prisons, probation services and our courts. It will be a great opportunity to network with funders and policy makers, and hear from experts in the field. Tickets include entry to our AGM, which will follow the conference. The AGM is your chance to comment on our work and priorities for the year ahead. Conference space is limited so please book early to guarantee your place. Find out more and book here
CLINKS EVENT: prison resettlement in the USA and Norway
'Alternative methods to prison resettlement' is a thought-provoking afternoon seminar [27th October, Birmingham, from £25] where you will learn about effective prison resettlement practice in the USA and Norway and broaden thinking in regard to developing a rehabilitative culture in UK prisons. Andy Laidlaw, Head of Reducing Re-offending at HMP Risley, and Sara Lee, Artistic Director at the Irene Taylor Trust, will share findings from their 2015 Winston Churchill Travel Fellowships on the topics of ‘what works in the USA and how this can help inform the future of rehabilitation in the UK’ and ‘the role of music in resettlement and crime prevention’. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: housing for women
A report published by the Prison Reform Trust and Women in Prison has found six in 10 women do not have homes to go to on release from prison, and a lack of housing is stopping women from turning their lives around. 'Home truths: housing for women in the Criminal Justice System' looks at the barriers that women often face in finding and maintaining stable accommodation, provides examples of good and promising practice, and makes recommendations for action at the local and national level. Download the report here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: women in poverty
Agenda has published 'Joining the Dots', a report that combines data on women’s experiences of poverty, mental health, life circumstances, and abuse and violence, to paint a picture of how different forms of inequality combine in the lives of women in poverty in England. According to Agenda, being poor can make women and girls more vulnerable to perpetrators of abuse and prevent them from escaping abusive situations, while the impact of abuse can trap women in poverty. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: office and meeting space in London
Only Connect is offering its community space in London's King's Cross for multi-purpose event and meeting hire. They also have limited office and hot-desk space available which is aimed specifically at charities. You will share space with other non-profits working in social justice, and have access to private meeting rooms. Rates are inclusive of bills, printing facilities, in-house IT support, tea and coffee. For enquiries please contact Savi Uppal at venue.enquiries@oclondon.org
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: services for short-term prisoners
HM Inspectorate of Probation has published 'An Inspection of Through the Gate Resettlement Services for Short-Term Prisoners'. The inspection report finds that the intentions of Transforming Rehabilitation, which meant to bring about a step change in rehabilitation by extending support from probation services to short-term prisoners who previously received no supervision on release, have not yet been realised. Inspectors found that, overall, services were poor and there was little to commend. Download the report here

OFFENDER HEALTH: tackling health inequalities
The Local Government Association (LGA) is seeking case studies from organisations that have planned or delivered interventions that have positive health outcomes in partnership with local authority public health departments or Clinical Commissioning Groups. The LGA is working with Volunteering Matters on the production of a publication highlighting the important contribution of the voluntary sector to improving health and wellbeing and tackling health inequalities. Send your positive examples of joint working, by 14th October, to Christine Heron at ch@christineheron.com
RESOURCE: explore grant data
GrantNav is a free online service that allows you to search, explore and download UK grant data from funders publishing their data to the 360Giving Standard. GrantNav has been developed to make it easier to find out which organisations have funded which sectors or regions, making it easier to map out the resources that are available and how this may have changed over time. This will help visitors to quickly obtain an overview of other organisations working in the same areas. Visit GrantNav here
BLOG: probation reforms
Rob Macmillan and James Rees of Third Sector Research Centre have written a blog looking at the Public Accounts Committee's report into Transforming Rehabilitation. They write, "Acknowledging the concerns expressed in our research, the Committee concluded that the reforms had not managed to open the probation system up to a wider group of providers, especially smaller voluntary sector organisations". Read the blog here
BLOG: young adult courts
Max Rutherford, Criminal Justice Programme Manager at Barrow Cadbury Trust, has written a blog discussing young adult courts and what Transition to Adulthood (T2A) is doing to make this happen. Max says, "We hope that by demonstrating a significant reduction in reconviction rates, young adult specific criminal courts will become part of mainstream practice, and that many other areas will seek to develop models to suit local need, adding further to a growing momentum for the T2A agenda."
