CLINKS EVENT: AGM and Annual Conference
Please save the date for Clinks’ 18th Annual General Meeting and Annual Conference [2nd November, London]. The event will be a great opportunity to network with funders and policy makers, meet our staff and fellow members, and hear from experts in the field of criminal justice and the voluntary sector. Mark the date in your diary, and look out for further details in future editions of Light Lunch. Please register your interest in attending by emailing Helen Carter at events@clinks.org
CLINKS BLOG: community safety and the voluntary sector
In a new Clinks guest blog Richard Bradley, Deputy Chief Executive of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire, talks about devolution, Gloucestershire's review of community safety arrangements and the role of the voluntary sector. He says, "we applied to the government to devolve more powers down to us at a local level, and we were the only area to include improved community safety in our plans. We are doing this to ensure we have resilient communities, are able to harness support and that our communities receive an efficient and cohesive response from public agencies when needed." CLINKS RESOURCE: evidencing women's desistance
Clinks has published the London Women's Shared Evidence Toolkit, a resource for organisations seeking to improve their services and offer to commissioners, and for those needing to collect evidence across a consortium or partnership. The Toolkit is intended for use by organisations working with women in contact with the Criminal Justice System and those at risk of offending. A common way of measuring how well individual services carry out what we think works in supporting women’s desistence is virtually non-existent - this Toolkit is an attempt to begin to fill that gap. It comprises two outcomes frameworks and a set of five tools for gathering evidence to measure the outcomes. Download the Toolkit here
NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARTS ALLIANCE NEWS: new name and new website
In response to feedback from stakeholders and funders, the leading national network supporting the arts in criminal justice has changed their name to the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA). They have a new website with information on their key work strands: promoting arts organisations, building the evidence base for arts in criminal justice, supporting and informing policy, practice development and developing audiences. If you are a NCJAA member and would like to update any of your member details please email kate.davey@clinks.org. Explore the new website here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: awards for restorative practice
Nominations are now open for the Restorative Practice Awards. The focus of the awards is to recognise individuals and organisations who are leading the way in demonstrating how and why restorative practices can be used to transform the way we live. They aim to showcase best practice throughout employment, education, community settings and the Criminal Justice System to demonstrate what can be achieved and to inspire others to take a restorative approach. Nominations will close on the 15th December. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: homelessness prevention
The Department for Communities and Local Government has commissioned Homeless Link to conduct research into successful models of homelessness prevention. They have issued a call for evidence of existing and emerging homelessness prevention practice that provides support to people at risk of homelessness. They are interested in hearing about any approach that has helped prevent homelessness from occurring or resolved a person’s housing need, rather than models of practice which focus on helping people who are already homeless. You can submit your evidence until 30th September. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: problem-solving courts
The Centre for Justice Innovation has published 'Problem-solving courts: an evidence review', a report that reviews the evidence on whether and why problem-solving courts work. The paper was written to inform development of government policy as well as to help shape practice within pilots in England and Wales. Problem-solving courts put judges at the centre of rehabilitation. The review suggests that there is strong evidence that adult drug courts reduce substance misuse and reoffending, and that the evidence on juvenile drug courts suggests they have either minimal or harmful impacts on young offenders. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: restorative justice programme
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a pan-London restorative justice programme. Restorative justice brings those harmed by crime or conflict and those responsible for the harm into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward. Restore: London, a consortium made up of Clinks members Catch22, Restorative Solutions, Khulisa and the IARS International Institute, has been appointed to develop the initiative. Together with key partners, the consortium aims to raise awareness of restorative justice among victims and offenders, improve access to services and victim satisfaction, increase referral speed and develop information-sharing between agencies. FUNDING: encouraging entrepreneurial talent
The Scape Reinvest Communities Fund is offering grants to entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises, social enterprises and voluntary groups irrespective of their background, age or experience. The theme for the 2016 fund is “new business start-up and the encouragement of entrepreneurial talent amongst young people leading to economic growth potential”. The funder also supports the issue of new business start-ups amongst young people. Grants of up to £60,000 will be available over a three year period. The deadline for expressions of interest is 12th September. Find out more here
FUNDING: build an endowment
Heritage Lottery Fund's Heritage Endowments Grants Scheme will provide grants of £250,000, £500,000 or £1 million to heritage organisations currently or previously funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The grant scheme supports heritage organisations to build an endowment, which will provide an annual income over the long term and create a lasting source of financial support. Grants must be matched £1:£1 by private donations raised by the applicant organisation. The deadline for project enquiry submissions is 13th October 2016. Find out more and apply here
FUNDING: improving the environment
The Tesco Bags of Help Programme is open to applications from projects that deliver improvements to the physical environment and/or encourage the use and long term stability of outdoor spaces. Each month, an in-store vote will determine which projects will be funded. Three local community projects will be voted on across 200 regions throughout Great Britain. In each region, the project that received the most votes from all stores in their region will receive a grant of up to either £5,000, £2,000 or £1,000. Applications will be accepted at any time. Find out more and apply here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: best practice in liaison and diversion
The Howard League for Penal Reform is holding a 'Community Awards open day' [morning of 13th September, London, free]. This half-day conference will celebrate the work of The North and North East London Liaison and Diversion Trial Site, who were winners of the Liaison and Diversion category in the Howard League’s Community Awards 2015. The event will highlight best practice in liaison and diversion and look at future innovative work taking place in the field. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: family engagement in prison
Pact will be hosting a launch event [14th September, London, free] announcing the findings of Cambridge University’s evaluation of Pact's family engagement work service. The research examined the impact that family contact, positive relationships and one to one support provided by the family engagement service has on desistance from crime and wellbeing in prison. Speakers will include representatives from the Ministry of Justice or National Offender Management Service, Pact, POPS, NEPACS, and Amey, as well as Dr. Jane Dominey who carried out the research. To attend, RSVP to cora.fern@prisonadvice.org.uk
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: mental health needs in prison
This year's Perrie Lectures [22nd September, Newbold Revel, £15-£50] will focus on understanding mental health needs in prison, and how prisons can provide supportive and safe environments. The Perrie Lectures Series are run annually, in memory of Bill Perrie, a pioneering prison governor. This is not a Prison Reform Trust event as described in last week’s edition of Light Lunch. One in four of the UK population will be affected each year by mental health problems and research shows that a much larger proportion of prisoners have mental health needs. This is an opportunity for anyone working in the criminal justice or mental health sector to share good practice and experience, and will enable researchers and students to understand the current issues faced by practitioners and professionals.
