CLINKS BLOG: foreign national prisoners
Clinks' latest guest blog comes from Lucy Slade, who last year was awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship to research best practice for foreign national prisoners. She travelled to Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain and Norway. She writes, 'Migration across borders is changing the population inside our prisons ... Because of language and cultural differences these men are often isolated. Almost all who are serving sentences of a year or more will be subject to deportation and do not have access to rehabilitation and resettlement. I wanted to see whether other countries offered an alternative approach.' Read the blog here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: moving on from homelessness
The Department for Communities and Local Government has commissioned Homeless Link to conduct research into effective approaches that help people to move on from homelessness services and access new accommodation. They are seeking examples of existing and emerging approaches that help people to secure new accommodation, access independent accommodation, return to the family home or move to accommodation that meets their current support needs. The research will identify good practice, look at what works in helping people to move on and present case studies that highlight effective working. Please return any examples by 30th September. Find out more here
CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: inquiry into homelessness
The House of Commons Communities and Local Government Committee has published a report on its inquiry into homelessness. It calls on all parts of government to commit to a common approach to ending homelessness and ensure that people with multiple and complex needs receive the support they need. The Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM) coalition partners welcome this important report, and particularly its call for a cross-government strategy to end homelessness. Read the MEAM statement here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prisoners' contact with family and friends
HM Inspectorate of Prisons has published a paper summarising the literature concerning the importance of prisoners maintaining relationships with the outside world and, in particular, with their family and friends. 'Life in Prison: Contact with Families and Friends' draws on evidence from recent inspections of adult prisons and survey data from inspection reports. It provides an overview of the ways in which prisoners are able to keep in contact with their family and friends, and the ways they experience this. Download the paper here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation services in Yorkshire
HM Inspectorate of Probation has published a Quality and Impact inspection report on the effectiveness of probation work in York and North Yorkshire. The inspection looks at the quality of probation work carried out by the Community Rehabilitation Company (CRC) and National Probation Service (NPS) and looks at what is helping and what is getting in the way of positive outcomes being achieved by people subject to probation in the area. Inspectors found much to commend. Both the local CRC and NPS region had gone through significant change as a consequence of Transforming Rehabilitation, and staff had maintained a pragmatic approach to the day-to-day work, focusing on responding to risks of harm posed and supporting individuals to change their lives for the better. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prison population projections
The Ministry of Justice has published a bulletin that presents prison population projections for England and Wales from August 2016 to March 2021. The prison population is projected to remain largely stable, the recall population is projected to increase slightly above current levels, and the over 50, over 60 and over 70 year old populations are projected to rise both in absolute terms and as increasing proportions of the total population. Download the bulletin here

CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: what does home mean for criminal justice charities?
Safe Ground are holding their 2016 symposium 'Moving home' [8th September, London, £10] which will bring together people with criminal convictions, their families, prison service staff, academics, practitioners, artists, community members, policy makers and other interested parties to discuss issues and themes identified through their work throughout the year. The aim of the symposium will be to captivate, challenge and provoke ideas. What does home mean for the people we work with? For criminal justice charities? For organisations delivering arts-based education? Is a home possible in a world that is constantly changing and where people are constantly relocating? Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: mental health needs in prison
This year's Prison Reform Trust Perrie Lectures [22nd September, Newbold Revel, £15-£50] will focus on understanding mental health needs in prison, and how prisons can provide supportive and safe environments. One in four of the UK population will be affected each year by mental health problems and research shows that a much larger proportion of prisoners have mental health needs. This is an opportunity for anyone working in the criminal justice or mental health sector to share good practice and experience, and will enable researchers and students to understand the current issues faced by practitioners and professionals. Find out more and book here
