CLINKS PROJECT: the rehabilitative prison
Clinks is pleased to announce the three voluntary sector coordinators and partner organisations that will be developing a co-ordinated approach to engage the voluntary sector in prisons. This is part of our ‘The Rehabilitative Prison: Good engagement with the voluntary sector’ project. They are confirmed as Amanda Sherriff - EDP Drug and Alcohol Services, at HMP Dartmoor, Rowland Clear - Peninsula Initiative Community Chaplaincy, at HMP Exeter, and Marie Waterman - Volunteer Centre Dorset, at HMP Guys Marsh. Stakeholders in the prisons, supported by an advisory group, will shape the coordination. The work will link to a practice review for future learning for other prisons. The coordinators will be in place by the end of September. Find out more here
CLINKS EVENT: women’s networking forum
The next women’s networking forum [19th September, Birmingham, free for members, £30 for non-members] will provide organisations with an update on policy developments affecting them and their service users. It will offer networking and support and will enable Clinks to represent specialist women’s organisations to government and other key stakeholders. The event is being hosted by Clinks, Women’s Breakout, Women’s Resource Centre and Agenda. Find out more and book here

CLINKS CASE STUDY: hidden disabilities
Clinks has published a case study looking at St. Giles Trust and the support they provide to people in the Criminal Justice System with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other disabilities. ASD is a lifelong condition that affects how a person communicates and makes sense of the world around them. Several aspects of life in prison - such as artificially lit wings, noise from prisoners and staff, and sudden changes to routine through lock-downs - can all increase someone’s stress and the problematic behaviour that results from it. Given that the condition shapes every aspect of an individual’s life, flexible and highly-tailored support is needed if they are to successfully desist from crime and rebuild their lives. CLINKS BLOG: criminal justice policy - what's new... well, a lot!
Every month Clinks members get an exclusive policy briefing covering everything that we have heard, seen, been involved with, and what we are doing to support the voluntary sector’s voice. Clinks' Head of Policy and Communications, Nathan Dick, has written a blog highlighting some of the big issues. The blog gives a taster of what members get in our monthly ebulletin. It covers: what's on the to-do list?; A new direction for justice?; Supporting the sector in Transforming Rehabilitation; keeping equalities on the agenda; and valuing volunteers. Read the blog here

CLINKS MEMBERS' NEWS: older prisoners
Prison Reform Trust and Restore Support Network have published 'Social care or systematic neglect? Older people on release from prison', which looks at the challenges faced by older prisoners. The report shares the findings of a project to gather evidence on the experience of older people on release. It provides feedback on the implementation of the Care Act 2014 and the impact of changes in resettlement provision on older age groups. It calls for the creation of a cross-government national strategy for meeting the health, social and rehabilitative needs of older people in prison and on release in the community. Download the report here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: mental health and substance misuse
Turning Point has published 'Dual Dilemma', a report looking at the impact of living with mental health issues in combination with drug and alcohol misuse. The findings highlight that the life chances of people who suffer from both addiction and mental health issues, such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, are being severely undermined. The report states that NHS services are not set up to support multiple needs so people are falling through gaps in care. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: financial exclusion
The House of Lords Select Committee of Financial Exclusion has launched a call for evidence for its inquiry to consider financial exclusion and access to mainstream financial services. The inquiry is focusing on: definitions and causes of financial exclusion; addressing financial exclusion; and government policy and regulation. Clinks will be submitting a response to the inquiry. To submit your views please contact Nicola.drinkwater@clinks.org. The deadline for submissions to the inquiry team is 14th September. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: what has happened to the prison population?
The Ministry of Justice publication 'Story of the prison population 1993 to 2016' summarises what happened to the prison population between 1993 and 2016 and the major factors contributing to the changes. The report finds that longer determinate sentences are being handed down by the courts and people are spending longer in prison. It looks at what has driven the increase, Imprisonment for Public Protection sentences, life sentences and recalls. Download the publication here

FUNDING: participation in healthcare
NHS England's Celebrating Participation in Healthcare Community Grants programme is providing grants of up to £1,000 for voluntary sector organisations. There will be a series of events where potential applicants can get more information about the funding. The deadline for applications is 22nd September. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: putting research into practice

CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: devolution of commissioning
'Offender Management – Devolution and Local Commissioning' is a Academy for Justice Commissioning seminar [3rd October, Manchester, free]. The seminar will discuss proposals for devolution of commissioning for prisons and probation and the development of new delivery vehicles to achieve better outcomes. Kevin Lockyer from Adaptus L.L.P. will argue that an integrated system, which puts rehabilitation at its heart, should be designed and delivered at a local level. He will describe a blueprint for reform that would see the Government’s current programme of prison reform as the first step towards a radically different model of offender management.
