CLINKS NEWS: women’s networking forum
We have published the notes from the first women’s networking forum organised by Clinks in partnership with Women’s Breakout, Women’s Resource Centre and Agenda. Fourteen voluntary sector organisations working with women in the Criminal Justice System were represented at the event. The notes give an overview of the key issues discussed, and an update on how some organisations are experiencing issues relating to the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms, competition and service user need. The issues raised are fed back to the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group which has the aim of building a strong and effective partnership between the voluntary sector, the Ministry of Justice, and the National Offender Management Service to reduce re-offending. Download the notes here
CLINKS EVENTS: networking in the North East
Clinks is holding two events in the North East of England. 'Exploring offender health in the North East' [morning of 13th September, Durham, from £25] will be an opportunity to gain an overview of the offender health policy landscape in the North East, and discuss the challenges organisations and their service users are facing and identify solutions. 'Service user involvement managers' network' [afternoon of 13th September, Durham, from £25] will be a networking event to give you the chance to share your experiences and expertise in service user involvement with other members. We’ll also hear from voluntary sector organisations leading the way in best practice in service user involvement and co-production. Save £10 when you book on both events. Find out more and book here
CLINKS BLOG: a piece of the offender health jigsaw
Clinks' Development Officer - Health and Justice, Hazel Alcraft, has written a blog highlighting stories of good and bad practice in health and care services for people in the Criminal Justice System (CJS). We know that people in contact with the CJS on average have greater health needs, and poorer health outcomes, than the general population. Nearly a third have a learning disability or difficulty, and around 80% smoke compared to 24% of the general population. We're encouraging you to share your experiences of good and bad practice with the Care Quality Commission, the independent regulator for health and social care services in England. Read the blog here
CLINKS PARTNER'S BLOG: devolution and multiple needs
The Making Every Adult Matter coalition has written a blog introducing 'Opportunity knocks', a briefing that looks at how devolution is developing in England and why it is relevant to people experiencing multiple needs, who have overlapping issues with homelessness, substance misuse, mental ill health and contact with the Criminal Justice System. The blog says, 'our conversations with local areas have found that more needs to be done to ensure that conversations about devolution and multiple needs are joined up at a local level. The briefing makes a series of recommendations' Read the blog and download the briefing here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: serious further offences
From April 2017 HM Inspectorate of Probation will be responsible for reviewing work with offenders who are under current or recent supervision by providers of probation services and have been charged with a specified Serious Further Offence (SFO). All SFO reviews will result in a written report which will be sent to the relevant National Probation Service division and/or to the relevant Community Rehabilitation Company. Where the offender is convicted of a Serious Further Offence, a report will be published on HMI Probation’s website, placing the findings in the public domain. The published report will generally include the delivery organisation’s response to the recommendations together with their summary of any progress made. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: violence against women
The National Assembly for Wales' Equality, Local Government and Communities Committee is undertaking a post-legislative inquiry into the Violence against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act 2015. The Committee will be looking at progress made in the implementation of the Act’s provisions and its impact to date. It will be considering: to what extent the approach to tackling violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence is improving as a result of the obligations in the Act; what are the most effective methods of capturing the views and experiences of survivors? Are arrangements in place to capture these experiences, and to what extent is this information being used to help inform the implementation of the Act’s provisions? The deadline for responses is 16th September. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation inspection in Staffordshire
HM Inspectorate Probation will be carrying out a quality and impact inspection in Staffordshire during the weeks commencing 26th September and 17th October. If you have any queries about this, please contact HMI Probation (Enquiries) mailbox at HMIP.Enquiries@hmiprobation.gsi.gov.uk
