CLINKS MEMBER OFFER: free legal support and advice
Clinks has partnered with Russell Cooke solicitors to offer our members free legal support. We hope this will allow smaller, local voluntary sector organisations working in the Criminal Justice System, with an income of less than £3 million per year, to access legal support which is often too expensive. We will cover the full cost of small quantities of legal support, which will be provided by Russell Cooke solicitors, on governance issues such as: contracting; collaboration agreements; reviewing governing documents; legal structures; intellectual property; and data protection. This is a rolling programme which will be available until all the allocated funding has been spent. For full information, including eligibility criteria, click here
CLINKS CASE STUDY: supporting families to reduce offending
'Using family therapy to reduce offending' is a Clinks case study focussing on Developing Initiatives for Support in the Community (DISC), and the work the charity carries out with young offenders, those at-risk of offending and other vulnerable groups. Their family therapy approach is based on an intervention which involves all family members and has been shown to be very effective at helping families and particularly young people address their underlying problems, improve outcomes and reduce offending. CLINKS BLOG: the importance of relationship in youth justice
While we wait to see if Charlie Taylor’s review of the youth justice system is published as planned in July - with some policy commentators now speculating that it may be delayed until a new Prime Minister is in place - a blog from Lesley Frazer of Clinks' policy team considers recent messages from research, from practice, from the probation inspectorate and from young people themselves, all of which have emphasised the central importance of relationship to young people’s desistance. Read the blog here
CLINKS BLOG: care for imprisoned pregnant women
In this Clinks guest blog Naomi Delap, Director of Birth Companions, talks about launching policy recommendations with a helping hand from radio soap opera The Archers. Birth Companions recently launched the 'Birth Charter for women in prison in England and Wales', a set of recommendations for the care of pregnant women and new mothers in prison. Her blog explains how they were able to take advantage of the issue of reform for this small but important group, reaching both the political agenda and the public eye; and asks what other creative ways the sector could promote widespread but nuanced discussion of criminal justice issues. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: the implications of Brexit on the voluntary sector
NCVO has published a briefing on the implications of the UK's vote to leave the EU for the voluntary sector. The briefing covers the political landscape, funding and finance, social implications, regulatory change and the role of civil society. It states the implications of 'Brexit' include political uncertainty, slow progress on government policy change, and potential financial challenges. An NCVO webinar on 7th July will take a look at the impact on the political and policy agenda in the months ahead. Register for the webinar here and download the briefing here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: using technology to support rough sleepers
Homeless Link's Streetlink service, the national referral line and website for rough sleepers, is a finalist in this year’s Tech4Good awards in the Community Impact Award category. The Streetlink website, mobile app and 24/7 helpline enable the general public to connect people who sleep rough to local services, getting them the support they need to leave the streets. The Tech4Good awards celebrate projects that use technology to make the world a better place. Finalists are also eligible to win a People's Award. Find out more about the Awards and how to vote for Streetlink here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: employment for ex-offenders
Blue Sky is offering fully paid 6-month starter jobs exclusively for ex-offenders, working in partnership with providers of grounds maintenance, waste management and other services. All jobs are entry-level so no previous experience or qualifications are needed. They are currently recruiting in Tonbridge, Elmbridge, Fleet, Bushey, Dartford, Kingston, Lambeth, Caterham, Essex, Milton Keynes, and Waterbeach, and are looking for work-ready referrals from organisations supporting ex-offenders. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Integrated Offender Management survey
The Home Office is seeking responses to the Integrated Offender Management (IOM) National Survey. IOM arrangements typically bring together staff from all the agencies engaged in local Criminal Justice System partnerships (police, probation, prisons, plus other key statutory and voluntary sector organisations) within a single, coherent team structure for the management of repeat offenders. The aim of the survey is to provide the IOM National Strategic Board with a snapshot of what IOM currently looks like, including new approaches and innovations in responding to the changing nature of crime and modern crime threats. The survey is open until 6th July. Respond to the survey here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: plan for joint criminal justice inspections
The criminal justice joint inspectorates HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, HM Crown Prosecution Inspectorate, HM Inspectorate of Prisons and HM Inspectorate of Probation have published a joint inspection business plan for 2016-17. The plan sets out the programme of criminal justice inspections where two or more inspectorates will be working together, and covers continuing commitments; new inspections; scoping studies; and composite reports and projects. The programme includes a core of on-going inspections which cover every area in England and Wales over a period of several years. The remaining work streams are more time-limited, targeted and themed inspections; visiting a small number of areas; and highlighting good and poor practice in a particular subject for the benefit of all areas. Download the business plan here
FUNDING: housing for ex-offenders
Thames Valley Community Rehabilitation Company is welcoming proposals from voluntary sector organisations in Oxfordshire for its Offender Housing Liaison Project - a fixed term partnership project between local authorities and criminal justice agencies within Oxfordshire. Funding has been set aside for personalisation projects with a focus on preventing individuals with an offending history from becoming homeless, and providing opportunities to live an independent life. Proposals should show an holistic approach to issues facing offenders and ex-offenders in obtaining and sustaining housing, and describe how their proposed service will be delivered through the personalisation approach. The deadline for proposals is 25th July. For further details and application packs please contact andrew.grillo@thamesvalleycrc.org.uk
FUNDING: benefitting local communities
Grants of up to £1,000 are available from the One Stop Carriers for Causes grants programme for projects that benefit local communities within two miles of a One Stop store in Great Britain. The programme is funded through the money raised from the 5p bag charge in One Stop stores in England, Wales and Scotland. Projects must meet at least one of the following outcomes: improving the lives of young people; improving the lives of the elderly; promoting physical activity; improving health or wellbeing; increasing community safety; and protecting or improving the local environment. This is a rolling programme, and applications will be accepted throughout the year. Find out more and apply here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: prisoner resettlement in Wales
'Prisoner Pathways: The next steps' is a Cymorth Cymru event [12th July, Cardiff, from £107+VAT] that will explore what has changed in Wales for people who need support, a year on from Transforming Rehabilitation. The event will ask: how is the new setup for prisoner resettlement working? And what steps can we take to make this process smoother and more effective? The event will follow on the themes of last year's event and look at what new issues will be facing the sector over the next year. There will be a range of workshops, and speakers including Lesley Frazer from Clinks' policy team. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: mark a charity's inauguration day
As part of Safe Ground's 21st birthday celebrations, they are holding an 'Open House' event [19th July, Battersea, free] at their offices to mark the charity's inauguration day. This will be an opportunity to drop in and learn more about the organisation's history; hear first-hand accounts of the impact of Safe Ground's programmes from Alumni members and delivery staff; watch film screenings from their archives; visit the pop-up gallery space where Alumni art will be on display; and attend an object handling session. BLOG: new housing for women ex-offenders
The Director of Anawim women’s centre in Birmingham, Joy Doal, has written a guest blog for the Barrow Cadbury Trust on celebrating their 30th birthday with new housing for women leaving prison. Joy writes, "In a new and exciting phase our women’s centre is building its very own accommodation on site for up to six women at a time, who are released from prison... As far as we are aware this is the first accommodation of its kind in England. We hope that one day it will be used as one of the alternative to custody units recommended by Baroness Corston in her 2007 report." Read the blog here
