If you have good examples to share, or you can suggest another organisation that does, please email hazel.alcraft@clinks.org
CLINKS BLOG: how do you join services seamlessly together?
In Clinks' latest guest blog Simon Bowkett, Chief Executive of Exeter CVS and CoLab, tells us about the creation of an exciting multi-agency space and the ongoing challenge of joining 25 different service cultures and practices together. The CoLab brings together many different services and projects under one roof to offer a joint response to some pressing challenges. Currently, preventing reoffending and reducing city centre crime and anti-social behaviour are right up there on the priority list. Simon says 'Joining 25 services together in a single building is a great achievement, but joining practice and cultures to become truly seamless is a whole other challenge.' Read the blog here
CLINKS FORUM: supporting women in the Criminal Justice System
Do you support women in contact with the Criminal Justice System? Clinks, along with Women’s Breakout, Agenda and Women’s Resource Centre are holding a networking forum in Preston on 23rd June. We will be discussing policy priorities for the member organisations and asking attendees to highlight issues and experiences relating to Transforming Rehabilitation, commissioning and fundraising, and the needs of service users. If you're not attending the event but would like to feed into the discussion please send your thoughts on these themes to Nicola.Drinkwater@clinks.org
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: recognising achievement
More than a thousand people have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2016. 70% of the recipients are people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity. Anthony Howlett-Bolton, former Chair of Langley House Trust, has been awarded an OBE for services to ex-offenders; Elroy Palmer, a St Giles Trust team leader, has been awarded an MBE for services to the rehabilitation of offenders; and Jocelyn Hillman, founder and chief executive of Working Chance, was appointed an OBE for services to the rehabilitation of women offenders. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: campaign to prevent homelessness
St Mungo’s is campaigning for specialist mental health support for homeless people and a change in the law to prevent more people from sleeping rough. They invite you to sign their letter calling on David Cameron to lead a new, ambitious national rough sleeping strategy to deliver mental health assessments and professional support to people on the street; and specialist supported housing to aid recovery. According to their research, four in ten people sleeping rough have a mental health problem and those with poor mental health are likely to be stuck sleeping rough for longer. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: new director for prisons charity
Trustees of the Prison Reform Trust have announced the appointment of the organisation's new director Peter Dawson. Commenting on his appointment, Peter said: "I could not be prouder to be selected as only the third director in the Prison Reform Trust’s 35 year history. Juliet Lyon leaves a legacy of a highly respected organisation staffed by tremendous people, with knowledgeable, committed supporters. But, despite gains made, whether you live or work in prison, things have rarely been tougher than they are now. Reform is urgent, and it is our job to make sure the Government’s fine words turn into reality." Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: review of BAME representation in the Criminal Justice System
David Lammy MP has written to us with a reminder to submit thoughts and insight to his online call for evidence for the review of racial bias and Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) representation in the Criminal Justice System which is due to close on the 30th June. He writes, "Individuals from minority backgrounds currently make up over a quarter of prisoners – compared to 14% of the wider population of England and Wales. Indeed, offenders from minority backgrounds are 39% more likely to face prison sentences than white offenders committing the same offences ... This is a unique opportunity. We have all-party agreement that this issue needs to be tackled and so I hope that you will support my efforts to make a fairer criminal justice system for all." Read the letter and respond to the call for evidence here

The Department of Energy & Climate Change has launched the 2016/17 Big Energy Saving Network £1.7 million grant funding programme. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: supporting homeless people
'Under One Roof' will be Homeless Link's 2016 annual conference [5th & 6th July, Hinckley, from £157.50] - two days of networking, learning and debate on the homelessness and supported housing issues affecting you most. With a rising number of people facing homelessness and increasing support needs, this event aims to guide you through the challenges, offer solutions to the issues you are facing day-to-day, and present opportunities for development and new ways of meeting the housing and support needs of the vulnerable people you work with. It will bring together supported housing and homelessness services to share innovative approaches, policy updates and insights into the future of service provision. Find out more and book here
OFFENDER HEALTH: end of life care
'A different ending: Addressing inequalities in end of life care' is a Care Quality Commission report looking at how dying patients are treated across various settings, focussing in particular on people who may be less likely to receive the good end of life care that they need. It finds end of life care for people who are in prison is dependent on local arrangements - although there is some good care, including prisons with a palliative care unit and links with hospices and specialist palliative care teams, efforts to obtain temporary or compassionate release to allow prisoners to die with dignity in the community are not always good enough. Download the report here
PUBLICATION: protecting children in care from criminalisation
'In Care, Out of Trouble' is the report from a review, established by the Prison Reform Trust and chaired by Lord Laming, that finds children in care are significantly over-represented in the Criminal Justice System and that this can be addressed by effective local practice. Its recommendations include developing strong local and national leadership to protect children in care from criminalisation; providing early support for children and families at risk; and improving joint working between children’s services, social services and criminal justice agencies.
