CLINKS REQUEST: impact of prison closure
Do or did you work in HMP Holloway? For all voluntary sector organisations delivering services in Holloway, we want to hear from you about the impact of the prison's closure. Are you intending to continue to deliver your services in HMP Downview and/or HMP Bronzefield? What is the financial impact on your organisation? To let us know what Holloway’s closure means for you, please contact Kate Aldous at kate.aldous@clinks.org
CLINKS OFFER: half price funding directory
Many of our members have told us that exploring new funding sources is a priority this year, so we’ve teamed up with DSC to offer our members a half price discount on their new Directory of Grant Making Trusts. The guide includes details of 2,000 grant-making trusts, each with the potential to give £40,000 a year or more - it lists the type of projects they fund, the funding available, the application procedure and samples of recent beneficiaries. This offer is valid until 30th June. Find out more here
CLINKS BRIEFING: prisoners and their families
'Supporting positive relationships between prisoners and their families' is a Clinks briefing offering a more detailed response to the questions asked at a roundtable organised by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to explore the impact of prison reform on the families of prisoners. The event was chaired by Clinks CEO, Anne Fox, and there were contributions from practitioners, academics, prison staff and families supported by Pact. The MoJ officials asked specific questions about the barriers and challenges to maintaining family ties, examples of good practice and evaluation. Download the briefing here
CLINKS BLOG: prison reform and the voluntary sector
'To truly create places of positivity and reform, prisons must engage with the voluntary sector' is a new Clinks blog by Louise Clark, Development Officer - Prison Engagement, outlining the work we are undertaking to respond to the prison reform agenda. It highlights five areas of Clinks' prison work to promote the voice of the voluntary sector and show the value of its expertise, enabling prisons to link to local organisations and help them to engage with the sector effectively. Read the blog here
CLINKS BLOG: health charging in the NHS
'Five things you need to know about health charging in the NHS' is a Clinks guest blog by Samir Jeraj, Policy and Practice Officer at the Race Equality Foundation, that explains what proposed changes to health charging in the NHS could mean for organisations working with people in contact with the Criminal Justice System. The Department of Health recently consulted on extending charges to primary care and non-NHS providers, including voluntary sector providers. If you work with foreign nationals or people subject to immigration controls, or provide healthcare as part of your services, these changes could impact your work if implemented. Read the blog here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: children in the Criminal Justice System
The Standing Committee for Youth Justice's report 'Growing Up, Moving On' is an international comparison of childhood criminal record systems, which finds the system in England and Wales to be the most punitive of all for children in the extent to which it ties them to their past. The report finds that a criminal record acquired by a child in England and Wales can affect that person for longer, and more profoundly, than in any of the other jurisdictions reviewed, and highlights how less punitive systems which promote rehabilitation are possible. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: promote your service in London prisons
Are you a charity or an organisation looking for a free space to provide your service or speak directly with people in need? Spurgeons, in partnership with the RJ4All Institute, is offering free spaces to exhibit work in HMP Belmarsh and HMP Isis visitors centres. They are open Tuesday to Sunday every week for families and legal workers across the UK to come and spend some quality time before their visit, and can provide you with a safe space to speak with visitors and promote your service. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: outstanding contribution to rehabilitation
Nepacs is inviting you to submit nominations for their 'Good practice awards' for people you feel deserve particular recognition for their work in rehabilitation - people working in prisons or other institutions, probation and other community services and voluntary sector organisations. The aim of the awards is to maintain a focus on rehabilitation within the Criminal Justice System and to ensure that good practice and ideas are broadcast as widely as possible so that they can be replicated elsewhere. They're looking for individuals or teams who have made an outstanding contribution either through an original and innovative approach, or by continued devotion in a particularly difficult and challenging area. The closing date for nominations is 27th June. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: imprisoned women and mental health
'Prison as a place of safety for women with complex mental health needs' is a report by The Griffins Society on research examining whether prison is being used as a place of safety for women who have complex mental health needs and deemed in need of protection from themselves. The research is based on interviews with police, court and prison staff. The findings suggest that the current use of prison as a place of safety for women with complex heath needs is unworkable, flawed and potentially dangerous and not in the best interests of the women offenders and prison staff. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspection of work with young offenders
HM Inspectorate of Probation has published a 'Full Joint Inspection of Youth Offending Work in Staffordshire'. Inspectors found that: work to reduce reoffending was satisfactory; work to protect the public and actual or potential victims was good; work to protect children and reduce their vulnerability was good; and the management and delivery of interventions to reduce reoffending was good. The report makes recommendations intended to assist Staffordshire in its continuing improvement by focusing on specific key areas. Download the report here
FUNDING: improving financial capability
The What Works Fund will help organisations pilot new approaches for improving people's financial capability and to evaluate their projects. It will provide financial support for projects focussed on building evidence of the types of interventions that can make a measurable difference to people’s financial capability. The Programme consists of two parts: Stream A will fund and evaluate projects seeking to help answer the ‘What Works questions’; Stream B will fund pilot activity focused on capacity building and sharing of best practice amongst financial capability practitioners. Up to £7 million is being made available for 2016/17. The deadline for expressions of interest is 8th July. Find out more and apply here
FUNDING: creative projects in Wales
The Creative Wales Awards will provide grants of up to £20,000 to support an intensive period of open-ended learning and research around significant artistic propositions in Wales. The Awards are available to individual arts practitioners for creative development projects, including taking time away from usual commitments to concentrate on a specific project. Projects could involve the creation of new, experimental and innovative work that takes forward the art form and creative practice, and is intended to enable artists working in any creative discipline, or across disciplines, to enhance and refresh their skills, creativity and creative partnerships. The deadline for applications is 7th September. Find out more and apply here
CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: commissioning in the digital age
'Digital by Default: Lessons for commissioning services in the digital age' will be an Academy for Justice Commissioning seminar [5th July, London, free] featuring Joe Harland, Head of Visual Radio at the BBC. Joe will explore the challenges of engaging customers to use their services and improving customer experience through ever increasing use of digital media. This seminar will give you the opportunity to learn the lessons from BBC Radio about connecting with your customers, how to use data to shape your output and tips on what quality is right for your digital audience. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: tackling inequality in London
'Tackling inequality between ethnic groups in London’s Youth Justice System' is a London Councils event [15th July, London, free], in partnership with the Black Training and Enterprise Group, to share experiences of tackling disproportionate outcomes within and between ethnic groups in the youth justice system. Highlighted by the Young Review, which published its recommendations in December 2014 for improving outcomes for young black and/or Muslim men in the Criminal Justice System, the issue has since featured in Charlie Taylor’s interim review of youth justice and David Lammy’s current review of racial bias and Black, Asian, and minority ethnic representation in criminal justice. Despite a series of high-profile reports, disproportionate outcomes for ethnic groups in London persist. Find out more and book here
