CLINKS BLOG: retaining your identity as the smaller partner in a merger
Sophie Wilson, CEO of Sova, has written a guest blog about her experiences of their merger with CRI. Sophie says, "The past ten years were probably the most challenging in Sova’s history. We went from the height of our financial success in the early to mid 2000’s to facing the very stark challenges of a changing sector and a dramatically changed funding landscape. The introduction of payment by results, the significant reduction in public spending and the emergence of privatisation of key public services changed how and who we did business with." CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: youth sector organisations discussing a merger
Ambition and the National Council of Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) are discussing merger opportunities, following a series of consultation events which highlighted a need to explore cross-sector alliances and the ability to articulate a strong, shared vision for youth services. With a combined heritage of 170 years, both membership organisations have a long history of inspiring young people to develop and achieve. Susanne Rauprich, NCVYS Chief Executive, said "Better collaboration is vital at a time where many youth organisations are struggling to secure a future. We are excited to be working with Ambition to ensure that young people continue to get the help they need despite reduced funding." Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: homelessness projects awarded funding
The Department of Health has awarded grants to over 60 homelessness and housing charities under the Homelessness Change and Platform for Life programmes, with successful applicants including Clinks members Riverside Housing Association and Depaul UK. Homelessness Change is designed to improve hostel accommodation and facilities so that better healthcare can be delivered in them, and help rough sleepers avoid unnecessary hospital stays. The Platform for Life scheme aims to provide shared rented accommodation for young people aged 18 to 24 who are at risk of homelessness; the money will fund time-limited tenancies that are linked with participation in work, further education, or vocational training. See the full list of projects here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: establishing a peer hub in Cardiff
St Giles Trust Cymru are developing a stage 1 proposal for Big Lottery Fund’s People and Places programme to establish a community-based peer hub in Cardiff. They are inviting comments on their project plan and to express your organisation’s interest in getting further involved. The project aims to improve the life chances of people who have experienced significant disadvantage and build stronger communities, and aims to apply their training programme to benefit volunteers (ex-service users) in agencies across Cardiff and cascade out to other organisations the benefits to be gained from having ‘support from someone who has been there’ as part of their services. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: using the arts to support women
Clean Break’s new touring theatre production 'Spent' is now available as a training package to book for conferences, seminars and staff training during February and March 2016. The play is performed by women affected by the Criminal Justice System and focuses on the theme of women, austerity and debt. The package is for frontline staff, managers, volunteers, advice workers, support staff and others who want to improve their practice; it uses the play as a stimulus for discussion and critical reflection, and is designed to help you reflect on and identify successful strategies to support women facing issues of debt and poverty. To discuss bookings and fees, contact kirstin.shirling@cleanbreak.org.uk
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspecting Transforming Rehabilitation
'Transforming Rehabilitation – Early Implementation 4: an Independent Inspection of the Arrangements for Offender Supervision' is the fourth HM Inspectorate of Probation report on the early implementation of the government’s Transforming Rehabilitation (TR) programme. The report relates to findings from inspections undertaken in July and August 2015. Inspectors focused on work undertaken at the point of sentence and allocation by the National Probation Service (NPS), work undertaken by the Community Rehabilitation Companies and the NPS to manage offenders, and the interfaces between the two organisations. The report finds adult probation services under TR had seen some improvements but more needed to be done. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: transition from youth to adult services
HM Inspectorate of Probation has published 'Transition Arrangements: a follow-up inspection' which reports on a follow-up inspection which sought to establish how far the recommendations from a 2012 report, on transition arrangements from youth to adult services in the Criminal Justice System, had been implemented and whether practice had improved. Inspectors visited six areas and spoke to staff from Youth Offending Teams, Community Rehabilitation Companies and the National Probation Service, conducting 50 interviews. Despite some examples of effective practice, inspectors noted an overall lack of progress by various local and national bodies in implementing its recommendations. Download the report here
FUNDING: small grants for disadvantaged areas
Small voluntary sector organisations in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, Cumbria, and Wales are invited to apply for the Sport Relief Community Cash Grants programme. Grants of £500 - £1000 are available. Applicants must be working in a disadvantaged or deprived area, have an annual income of less than £100,000, and must also be doing work that has a sustained beneficial impact on people's lives who are excluded or disadvantaged through low income, rural or social isolation, age, disability, race, sexuality or gender, and have limited access to other sources of income. FUNDING: take part in an arts festival
The Arts Council of Wales is currently accepting applications from Wales-based arts organisations for funding to take part in Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016. Organisations can apply now for grants of between £5,001 and £12,000 to take part in the Fringe; providing a venue to present their work internationally. Organisations must have a written governing document, a track record of delivering arts activity for audiences or participants, a bank account in their name, and an Equal Opportunities Policy that has been reviewed by the organisation’s governing body within the last three years, and which complies with current legislation. The deadline for applications is 10th February. Find out more and apply here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENTS: joint enterprise, gangs and racism
Centre for Crime and Justice Studies are holding three events [25th January, Manchester and London | 26th January, London | free] to launch and discuss the findings of their report ‘Dangerous associations: Joint enterprise, gangs and racism’. The report raises concerns about the impact of joint enterprise prosecutions on Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities. Focusing on Manchester, Nottingham and London, the report will reveal new findings that give strong grounds for concluding that Black people are systematically discriminated against in joint enterprise prosecutions. Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: children affected by parental imprisonment
'Promoting the Rights and Well-being of Children Affected by Parental Imprisonment through Preventative Services' is a Barnardo's Cymru conference [16th February, St Asaph | 18th February, Cardiff | free] that will consider the needs of children affected by parental imprisonment. Law for Life are holding a half-day training session [24th February, London, free] on how to deliver community-based, accessible public legal education. In the context of legal aid cuts, the training aims to provide a way for individuals and organisations to begin to address gaps in provision and to make the best use of available resources. It aims to build the capacity of agencies to help their service users become more engaged and proactive in their day-to-day legal interactions, improve their bargaining position armed with rights frames, and negotiate the bureaucratic aspects of public services delivery more effectively. To find out more and book, email tara.mulqueen@lawforlife.org.uk
PUBLICATION: violence, abuse and disadvantage in the lives of women
Agenda, the alliance for women and girls at risk, has published 'Hidden Hurt', a report looking at violence, abuse and disadvantage in the lives of women. Agenda's research finds that around 1.2 million women in England are living with the impact of ‘extensive’, lifelong physical and sexual abuse and violence. They are calling for better funding of specialist services for women who have experienced extensive abuse, more recognition of issues around abuse in mainstream services, and for leadership from national and local government to make sure women and girls who experience the most extensive abuse get appropriate support.
