CLINKS BLOG: our new CEO has been meeting members
"Over the last month you’ve been welcoming me into your services and settings with the same enthusiasm and warmth I’ve come to know and love in the voluntary sector. You’ve been sharing with me your knowledge of your own services, the people you aim to help over every obstacle with the same passion and belief with which I’ve seen help organisations achieve great things, even in spite of the greatest challenges. I’ve been bowled over by the achievements of your services and the people they support. You drive towards clear missions and visions with an appetite for change which is inspiring and yet familiar to me and which gives me the feeling that I can be part of this too." CLINKS SPEECH: Clive's valedictory lecture
Clive Martin's valedictory lecture as Director of Clinks is now available online. Clive said: "I want to try and do a number of things this evening that set out my observations. I will talk about the sector specifically but in doing that I hope to also talk about reform and what might happen next. And while I will focus on the voluntary sector I know reform is not the preserve of the sector. It is something that all thinking professionals and learning organisations have been a part of, and I hope will continue to be a part of for many years to come." Download the full speech here
CLINKS WORKSHOP: writing winning bids
'Writing winning bids' is a Clinks workshop [28th January, Peterborough, from £50] that will equip you with the skills to submit winning bids, secure positions within supply chains and get ahead of the competition. Clinks and Candour Collaborations will lead this workshop for voluntary sector organisations working in the Criminal Justice System to learn how to effectively identify contract and sub-contract opportunities, write strong narrative responses, and engage Tier 1 providers to win business. CLINKS REQUEST: support Light Lunch
Clinks have been providing our flagship weekly newsletter, Light Lunch, to professionals working with offenders since 2006. In ten years readership has continued to grow from 100 to almost 10,000 subscribers, making it one of the most popular reads for those with an interest in the voluntary sector and criminal justice. Each issue of Light Lunch is packed full of essential information, resources, funding and events; saving you time and making sure you never miss out on what you need to know. To ensure we can continue to help you make a difference, we’d like to ask readers to make a small contribution of £20, or whatever you can afford. Support Light Lunch here
CLINKS GUEST BLOG: women's desistance from crime
In this Clinks guest blog Rebecca Gomm, who is working on a project exploring the perspective of women in contact with the Criminal Justice System (CJS) in relation to interventions and approaches which support their desistance from offending, gives the details of her research findings. Overall, she found that a woman's desistance journey is rooted in recovery, and layers of recovery, mainly due to the high levels of trauma they have experienced in their lives. This is the first of two blogs, the second of which will be published next week and gives Rebecca's thoughts about promoting trauma informed responses when working with women in contact with the CJS. NAACJ SURVEY: arts and criminal justice
What would you like to see as a member benefit from the National Alliance for Arts in Criminal Justice (NAACJ)? What would you like to see them doing more of? What challenges do you think are facing the arts and criminal justice sector on the whole? The NAACJ are launching their 2015 member survey this month to find out if the work they undertake fits what is needed by their members and the sector more widely. They would be grateful if you have five minutes to answer questions on various aspects of their work and on the arts and criminal justice sector more widely. The survey will be open until Thursday 7th January 2016. Click here to take the survey
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: first 24 hours in prison
HM Inspectorate of Prisons has published 'Life in prison: The first 24 hours in prison', which draws on evidence from recent inspections of local prisons undertaken by HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMI Prisons) and survey data from inspection reports published between April 2014 and March 2015. The findings of the paper are separated into three different areas; the prisoner’s experience in reception, the prisoner’s experience on their first night at the prison and the support available to prisoners during their first 24 hours in an establishment. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: statistics on race and criminal justice
Ministry of Justice has published the latest 'Statistics on Race and the Criminal Justice System', which compiles statistics from data sources across the Criminal Justice System (CJS), to provide a combined perspective on the typical experiences of different ethnic groups. In general, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups appear to be over-represented at most stages throughout the CJS, compared with the White ethnic group. The risk of being a victim of crime was significantly higher for BAME groups; homicide rates were higher for Black victims; and police records show increases in the levels of racially or religiously aggravated crimes. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: TR through the gate and beyond
Clinks members can buy tickets to attend 'Transforming Rehabilitation: Delivering through the gate and beyond', an Inclusion conference [8th December, London] at a reduced rate of £95+VAT. The conference aims to provide delegates with a better understanding of how the Ministry of Justice's original desires for Transforming Rehabilitation are being delivered in practice and how the current service provided to offenders across England and Wales can be improved. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: the learning needs of young people
Prisoners’ Education Trust are holding an academic symposium [25th January, London] to expand the focus of their policy work on the learning needs of young people and young adults. The symposium will kick-start their first year, and feed clear policy recommendations into the Charlie Taylor Review of the Youth Justice System based on their learning. Alongside panel discussions featuring former learners, they will be holding a number of themed roundtables to gather expert views and knowledge to feed into the review. If you have a background in youth justice education and would like to attend this event please send an expression of interest, with a brief outline of your research interests and publications, to volunteer@prisonerseducation.org.uk
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: reshaping the penal landscape
'Justice and Penal Reform: re-shaping the penal landscape' is a Howard League for Penal Reform event [16th-18th March, Oxford, from £150] that will form part of the Howard League’s 150th anniversary celebrations, and be part of the symposium 'What is Justice? Re-imagining penal policy' which is charged with generating intellectual debate that can act as a springboard to contest the conventional role of the penal system, ultimately promoting a new, achievable paradigm that will deliver a reduced role for the penal system while maintaining public confidence, fewer victims of crime and safer communities. Find out more and book your place here
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: peer mentoring course
Back on Track's Peer Mentoring Course [starts 12th January, London] is for people to use their experiences in a positive way and trains participants up to be able to mentor individuals coming out of prison, or those that are on probation. This is a great opportunity for individuals that want to move into support work/key-work/mentoring roles or similar. Find out more and apply by emailing tim.ibrahim@hestia.org
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: acting classes for ex-prisoners
Synergy Theatre Project are running a ten week 'Introduction to acting' course [starts 19th January, London, free] for ex-prisoners. Learn the techniques used by actors and explore them in fun, practical sessions, leading to a short performance for an invited audience. The course runs on Tuesday afternoons, and no previous experience is needed. To apply and for further details email nicole@synergytheatreproject.co.uk
PUBLICATION: research into multiple and complex needs
'Understanding the whole person' is a Revolving Doors Agency briefing that highlights common themes in research into desistance from crime, recovery from mental illness and recovery from substance misuse. The paper looks at journeys of personal change. While public services tend to focus on crisis and immediate need, these journeys involve building a fulfilling life over the long-term. However, for many people this means moving away from very marginalised, stigmatised and difficult experiences. Chronic drug or alcohol dependency, frequent offending, and institutionalised mental health care all make building a healthy, enjoyable life a considerable challenge. Download the briefing here
PUBLICATION: apprenticeships for people in recovery
'Tales from RAPt Apprentices' is a new publication that tells the stories of individuals who have been a part of RAPt's Apprentice scheme - people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction who had limited professional experience but wanted the chance to make a difference. The scheme provides an opportunity to gain meaningful skills and training whilst being paid. There is a focus on RAPt ex-clients, but the scheme is also open to other released prisoners, RAPt volunteers and people in recovery in the community. Download it here

In the first in the series, Madeline tells Lynne's story of tragedy, hope and resilience. Read Lynne's story here
