CLINKS PUBLICATION: designing and delivering volunteer programmes
'The design and delivery of volunteering in the Criminal Justice System' is a new report from Clinks' Justice Involving Volunteers in Europe (JIVE) project. The report presents the results of a study conducted on volunteer recruitment, management, training and support practices within the justice systems of six European countries. It aims to highlight existing practice and work methodologies as a way of learning by example. Download the report here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: royal award recognises work done to reduce victims of sexual offending
Yorkshire, Humberside & Lincolnshire Circles of Support and Accountability (YHLCOSA) has been awarded the Duke of York’s Community Initiative, recognising their work reducing victims of sexual offending. Circles is a unique approach which consists of ordinary members of local communities who volunteer to meet weekly, as a group, with an offender, providing a place of support to be honest about triggers that could lead to re-offending. Tammy Banks, YHLCOSA Director, said: "The volunteers are our magic ingredient. For a few hours a week, each week, these ordinary people do an extraordinary job. Evidence shows there are less victims of sexual offending because of the time they give." Find out more about YHLCOSA here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: supporting young women leaving prison
Pecan are very pleased to announce that its Moving On programme has been awarded the Approved Provider Standard (APS) by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation for its work with young female ex-offenders leaving prison and returning to London. The APS report found that the project is well managed, effective, and demonstrates high client satisfaction, very much in line with Pecan’s mission 'to enable individuals to achieve their full potential'. Five clients came along to the Pecan office in Peckham to be interviewed about their experience of the programme, and said "If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be in a good place", and "they change people's lives...they are like heroes to me". CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: prisoners' families charity wins award
Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact) were awarded the Longford Prize earlier this week. The presentation took place as part of the annual Longford Lecture, given this year by Michael Palin on the subject of prisoners' families. The award was presented to the charity’s Chief Executive, Andy Keen-Downs, by the Rt. Hon Michael Gove, the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. The judging panel said: “Good research and good practice have both long shown that maintaining strong family ties is one of the key factors in offenders’ rehabilitation and avoidance of reoffending. And for that reason the judges want this year to celebrate the outstanding work of Pact and the thoughtful and wide-ranging support it provides for the parents, siblings and children of prisoners, who are often the hidden victims of crime.” Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: use of restraint on children in custody
Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons has published a report on behaviour management and restraint of children in custody. The report focuses on the introduction of a new system of managing physical restraint, known as ‘minimising and managing physical restraint’ (MMPR), in child custody. The new approach was adopted following the death of two boys in secure training centres in 2004. Although the inspection report concludes that MMPR is an improvement on what went before, it adds that the new system will not be rolled out fully until July 2016 – a year behind schedule – because of staffing shortages and the decommissioning of beds in young offender institutions and secure training centres. Download the report here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: experiences of victims in Crown Court cases
‘Structured mayhem’ is a Criminal Justice Alliance briefing on the sometimes harrowing experiences of victims, witnesses and defendants in a wide-ranging series of Crown Court cases. The briefing is a digest of a piece of research carried by the Institute for Criminal Policy Research. Featuring extensive interviews with court users it furnishes a stark reminder that, for all the progress made in recent years, our courts all too often still cause huge frustration and distress to victims and witnesses, and also defendants. FUNDING: preventing people being drawn into terrorism
Grants of up to £100,000 are available for organisations that stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The fund will support particularly innovative projects developing new methods and/or developing new technologies with a potential for replication nationally; projects promoting understanding and learning, identification and dissemination of best practices; and pilot projects. The deadline for applications is 2nd December. Find out more and apply here
FUNDING: innovative solutions to disadvantage and discrimination
Funding of up to £25,000 is available for start-up organisations with innovative ideas to solve old problems in new ways, helping young or disadvantaged people, especially anyone suffering deprivation and discrimination, such as poor, homeless and vulnerable women and children. Projects should respond to the needs of people who are most underprivileged, disadvantaged, poor and on the fringes of society; help people to help themselves and give them a sense of dignity and self-respect; be based in local communities and spring from their own expressed needs and wishes. The deadline for applications is 6th January. Find out more and apply here
FUNDING: to advance the human rights of women and girls
Grants of between $5,000 and $30,000 are available to women’s groups, outside the United States, that advance the human rights of women and girls. The funder values local expertise and believes that women themselves know best how to determine their needs and propose solutions for lasting change. To maximize their impact in defending and expanding hard won gains in women’s rights, the grants will focus on three critical areas: Freedom from Violence, Economic & Political Equality, and Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights. The deadline for applications is 31st January. Find out more and apply for a grant here
FUNDING: for young people to create opportunities to volunteer
Individual young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years old can apply for grants of up to £500 for new or existing projects that create at least two new volunteering opportunities. The project must clearly benefit a chosen community, and the idea could either be new or one that has been used in the past but which the applicant would like to try again, doing things a bit differently. Applications can be made at any time. Find out more and apply here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: using art to rebuild life after prison
Former prison governor, Lady Martha Bruce, is to open an art exhibition [27th November - 26th January, London, free] highlighting the journey of one woman who used art as a tool to heal the damage to her mental wellbeing and rebuild her life after prison. Compiled over the course of 30 years, the artwork tracks Eve McDougall’s journey which started when she was sent to an adult Victorian prison for breaking a baker’s window to steal some bread for her and her hungry siblings, when she was just 15 years old. The exhibition explores Eve’s struggles upon leaving prison and how she has since rebuilt her life, including by teaching creative writing, poetry and art to other women who have experienced incarceration. Find out more here
CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: partnership working post TR

PUBLICATION: smokefree prisons
Many jurisdictions worldwide have implemented smokefree laws that apply to indoor public places and workplaces. However, prisons are often exempt. Action on smoking and health (ash) has produced a factsheet that sets out the rationale for making prisons smokefree, identifies which jurisdictions have smokefree prisons, the impact of smokefree policies in prisons, and further issues that emerge from the evidence. It also sets out the process for going smokefree announced in September 2013 by the National Offender Management Service for England and Wales. Download it here
