They are now seeking your views on these changes. The deadline for submissions is the 1st December. Find out more here

PUBLICATION: discussing criminal justice
As part of the Justice Matters project, Centre for Crime and Justice Studies (CCJS) asked people to tell them what they would build in place of criminal justice to deal with the social harms that affect society. CCJS said: "This is a challenging subject. It is challenging because it is about rethinking the configuration of policy and practice – for instance in housing, education, health, social security and employment – so that many current criminal justice responses are not required at all." Download the report here

BLOG: word of caution on building more prisons
'Criminal justice 'transformation': a wolf in sheep's clothing?' is a recent blog post by Centre for Crime and Justice Studies' Rebecca Roberts, offering a word of caution on recent calls for a prison building programme and expansion of electronic monitoring. Rebecca says: "Build new prisons – why not? New jails are marketed to communities as offering a ‘boost’ to the local economy. However, I am yet to be convinced that new jails are socially and economically valuable infrastructure projects. At their very centre, prisons are unhealthy and damaging places for both prisoners and prison officers. New prisons may offer modern and cleaner buildings but they also expand capacity across the estate, facilitating an increase in the numbers of people incarcerated." Read the full blog post here
