LIGHT LUNCH NOTICE: no Light Lunch next week
There will be no Light Lunch next week, due to our AGM. In it's place, we'll be publishing a one-off funding bulletin, full of opportunities that have become available recently. We'll collate these into one, geographically categorised funding bulletin, and send it in place of Light Lunch.
CLINKS RESOURCE: articulating your offer
‘Articulating Your Offer’ is a new two page infographic to help organisations create an engaging market proposition and demonstrate their effectiveness to commissioners, funders, prime contractors and potential partners. Areas covered include: demonstrating impact, presenting your unique selling points, and celebrating your achievements. It also includes tips on use of language and tailoring for a specific contracting opportunity. The infographic tool has been written by Candour Collaborations and ACEVO, in partnership with Clinks. Download it here
CLINKS EVENT: social enterprise in prisons
‘Social Enterprise in prisons - here at last?’ is a Clinks conference [3rd March, Durham, free] to discuss examples of good practice of social enterprises in North East prisons. The event will encourage delegates to explore some of the issues that social trading at scale can bring; what lessons can be learned and the impact on the offender journey and prison culture. Speakers include Steve Robson (Governor at HMP Kirklevington Grange), Alan Tallentire (Deputy Director of Custody at NOMS), Juliet Lyon CBE (Director of Prison Reform Trust) and Maggie O'Neill (Professor In Criminology at Durham University). Find out more and book here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: reducing violence in prisons
Following last week's news coverage on violence in prisons, Leap Confronting Conflict has written a blog article which asks 'How can anyone think about rehabilitation if they’re constantly looking over their shoulder?'. Thomas Lawson, CEO, says: "Leap’s argument is simple – invest in prison officer training in conflict management to prevent violence and use a powerful resource in the prisons in leadership roles – those living there." Read the blog post here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: merging local justice areas in Northumbria
Views were sought recently on the proposed merger of the local justice areas (LJAs) in Northumbria; with the potential to create either one local justice area, two local justice areas, or retain the seven existing areas. The consultation response found that: "There were significant benefits in moving to two LJAs, not the least of which was that this solution would avoid the problems of travelling that a single LJA would entail. It would enable savings and efficiencies to be made in terms of administrative support for bench meetings and the listing of cases, whilst maintaining community links and not imposing intolerable burdens on a Bench Chairman. A two LJA system would be easier to manage in terms of organising sitting rotas and was the model which had the most support from those who, whilst resistant to change, accepted change was inevitable." PUBLICATION: the UK's street drugs scene
A significant rise in street drug purities, coupled with high levels of prescription drug and synthetic cannabinoid use among vulnerable communities, are raising concerns among drug services facing an ever more complicated drug scene - and a rising toll of drug deaths. 'Down a stony road' is the report from the DrugScope annual snapshot survey of the UK drug scene, conducted in December 2014 in 17 towns and cities across the UK. Download the short report here
PUBLICATION: mapping severe and multiple disadvantage
'Hard Edges: Mapping Severe and Multiple Disadvantage in England' is a new LankellyChase Foundation research report that draws together previously separate datasets from homelessness, offending and substance misuse treatment systems. It also takes into account available data around mental health and poverty. It delivers statistics on people facing severe and multiple disadvantage: where they live, what their lives are like, how effectively they are supported by services, and the economic implications of the disadvantages they face. LankellyChase call for far-reaching changes to address this issue from the Government, local authorities and the voluntary sector. Download the report here. Nathan Dick, Clinks’ Head of Policy and Communications, has written a blog about the report which you can read here
PUBLICATION: youth offending teams and troubled families
'The contribution of Youth Offending Teams to the work of the Troubled Families Programme in England', a joint inspectorate report, found that youth offending teams were playing an important part in the Troubled Families programme in their work to reduce reoffending by young people, but needed to address some practical issues. Inspectors were concerned to find that partnership work was not as focused as it could have been; arrangements for responding to families who did not engage were not robust enough; and many frontline staff said they had not had adequate training to undertake their Troubled Families duties. Download the report here
