LIGHT LUNCH NOTICE
This is the last Light Lunch of 2014. Issue 374 will be published on Friday 9th January 2015. The Clinks office will be closed from the 24th December and will reopen on Monday 5th January 2015. Season's Greetings to all Light Lunch readers from the Clinks team.
CLINKS BLOG: changing the lives of people with multiple needs
Ben Watson, Clinks Communications Assistant, has written a blog on the launch event for West Yorkshire Finding Independence, a project led by DISC which aims to improve the lives of people experiencing multiple needs and change the system for service users in the region. The blog covers the project’s focus on service user involvement, speakers’ insights into how to re-think service design, desistance from crime, and the needs of women with multiple needs. Read the blog here
CLINKS SURVEY: last chance to tell us about your women’s health services
Clinks’ survey on voluntary sector health and care services for women in the Criminal Justice System closes this week. If you provide gender-specific health services for women offenders, please take a few minutes to respond if you have not already done so. We’ll use the findings to highlight and promote good practice, identify any gaps in service provision and lobby health and justice commissioners to address them; so we’d love to hear what you do. As a thank you, everyone responding will receive a free copy of Clinks’ recent report ‘Who Cares? Where next for women offender services?’. The survey is run in partnership with Action for Prisoners' and Offenders' Families and the Women's Health Equality Consortium. Fill out the survey here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: new award for criminal justice work
The Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA) has announced it's new award. The CJA campaigns for a fairer and more effective Criminal Justice System and the award will be presented either to the individual who, or the organisation which has made the most positive contribution to promoting the strategic aims of the CJA. The winner will receive £1,000 to further their work in this area. For more information, download the flyer here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspection of probation work
HM Inspectorate of Probation will be inspecting 'Early Work and Effective Recording undertaken by the NPS and CRCs' in West Mercia during the week commencing 26th January. If you have any queries about this, please email the HMI Probation mailbox
FUNDING: London victims' fund
The London Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime has launched its Victims' Fund to help victims of crime across London. The aim of the scheme is to ensure the continued and improved provision of specialist services that support victims of crime by helping them to cope and ultimately recover. Voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations are invited to apply for grants of up to £80,000 to improve their ability to successfully support victims of crime. Successful applicants will have a maximum of 12 months from April 2015 to spend the grant. The deadline for applications is 26th January. Find out more here
FUNDING: for infrastructure organisations
NCVO's Big Assist programme supports infrastructure organisations looking to meet the changing environment and seeking to adapt the way you operate. If you are eligible you can apply for voucher support, receive sponsorship for visits and mentoring and get access to their free resources on ShareSpace and in their library. The deadline for vouchers is 31st December, and Clinks is a registered provider, so you can buy in support from us as well as many other organisations. Find out more and apply here
FUNDING: empowering local communities
The Comic Relief Local Communities Programmes for Oxfordshire, City of London, Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets have grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 for community projects that empower local people and enable them to create lasting change in their communities. As there are still many communities in the UK that suffer from severe economic and social deprivation, the aim of this fund is to help alleviate some of the issues. Projects should be run by people directly affected by the issues they are dealing with and priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community. The deadline for applications is 9th January for Oxford, and 9th February for London
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: growing through franchising
'Wish you were here' is a Changing Tunes conference [18th March, London, £40] where they will share their experience of growing their charity through franchising. Changing Tunes will be sharing their successes and lessons learned, and will answer the question: ‘Is franchising a successful model of growth for charities?’ This event will be of interest to funding bodies, charities looking to expand sustainably, and members of the prison and justice sectors. The day will feature input from the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Nick Hardwick, and criminologist Prof. Shadd Maruna. Find out more and book your place here

PUBLICATION: supporting care leavers in the CJS
'Examining Clear Approach: An Intervention for Care Leavers on an Intensive Alternative to Custody Order' explores the pilot phase of Clear Approach - a unique intervention available to care leavers on an Intensive Alternative to Custody (IAC) order. An analysis of the OASys profile of the young men on IAC showed that those identified as care leavers were assessed as having greater needs on all OASys dimensions. A key recommendation is that funding and resources should be made available to roll-out Clear Approach on a long-term, sustainable basis so that it has the opportunity to bed-in to mainstream provision. Download the report here
PUBLICATION: reducing women's imprisonment
'Transforming Lives: reducing women’s imprisonment' is a Prison Reform Trust report, launched this week, that paints a mixed picture of the Criminal Justice System’s response to women. It profiles some excellent local initiatives whilst mapping overall patchy provision of services for vulnerable women. The report’s key findings include a need for sustained political leadership, the importance of stable funding for women’s community services, the scope for more effective information sharing, and the opportunity to share learning about 'what works' across the UK. Download the report here
PUBLICATION: inspection into the early implementation of TR
'Transforming Rehabilitation - Early Implementation: An independent inspection setting out the operational impacts, challenges and necessary actions April 2014 - September 2014' is a HMI Probation report that aims to provide a clear evidenced picture of implementation on the ground, to test effectiveness through objective methods and to recommend improvements. Download the report here
PUBLICATION: the history of youth justice
Beyond Youth Custody has consolidated significant events in hundreds of years of youth justice into a timeline. Dr Tim Bateman and Professor Neal Hazel’s comprehensive timeline provides an overview of the main shifts in youth justice legislation, policy and practice since the first attempts to separate young offenders from adults in the Criminal Justice System a little over 220 years ago. The timeline will be useful to anyone with an interest in the development of present arrangements for dealing with children who break the law. Find out more here
OPPORTUNITY: become a mentor for vulnerable women
Best Foot Forward is an initiative, run by Kazuri Properties CiC, that gives vulnerable women, often with complex issues, the opportunity to reintegrate into mainstream sustainable employment and to progress to economic independence. They are looking for women who will volunteer for one year to mentor a woman through their 10 week training program and beyond. By giving a small amount of your time, and with the support of their experienced supervisors, you can make a real difference to the life of a young woman. Find out more and apply here
RESOURCE: probation inspectorate newsletter
HMI Probation has issued the first of a regular series of newsletters to update stakeholders on the ongoing development of their new inspection methodology. This issue focuses on the change to an outcome focused approach to inspection and provides links to the new inspection models. Read the newsletter here
CAMPAIGN: support for people sleeping rough
StreetLink is two years old today and has helped more than 8,500 people sleeping rough to get connected to help. 2,400+ people sleep rough every night in England. Homeless Link has launched the #SleepWell campaign to raise awareness of StreetLink (the rough sleeper phone-line, website and mobile app) and encourage people to take action whenever they see someone sleeping rough this winter. They’ve produced a short animated video explaining the campaign and calling for public support, and a Thunderclap social media campaign to encourage as many people as possible to send a message of support simultaneously on 21st December. Find out more here
