LIGHT LUNCH NOTICE: no edition on August Bank Holiday
Due to the Bank Holiday on Monday 25th August, there will be no Light Lunch on Friday 22nd August.
CLINKS BLOG: how do you choose which clients to work with?
In the second of an occasional series of blogs about Clinks’ work with the Making Every Adult Matter Coalition (MEAM), we explore some of the issues involved in identifying appropriate clients. MEAM supports 11 local areas in co-ordinating services for people with multiple and complex needs. At Clinks, Isabel and Natalie from the local development team have been helping these areas to agree which clients to work with. In their blog they ask how many clients should you work with? What assessment and referral process do you use? And how do you link with other local cohorts and partnerships? They would love to hear your thoughts about how to agree cohorts of clients to work with in local partnership arrangements. Find out more and have your say here
CLINKS CASE STUDY: engaging hard to reach women
Clinks members A Way Out and Changing Lives work across the North East of England and Cumbria supporting women who are known to be those most resistant to any form of engagement with services. This case study focuses on their services that support women to exit prostitution, find stable accommodation, reduce drug use, and reunite mothers with their children. Download their case study here
CLINKS CASE STUDY: housing and homelessness for young people
Community Campus 87 provides a range of housing-related services to both young people and adults across Teesside. By providing training tenancies and stable accommodation they have enabled their clients to stop their drug use, desist from crime, enter productive society and turn their lives around. This case study presents the evidence which demonstrates the effectiveness of their approach in doing this, helping people to get back on their feet. Download their case study here
CLINKS CASE STUDY: arts and restorative justice with young people
Helix Arts is a participatory arts organisation based in Newcastle upon Tyne that works with a range of socially excluded groups, including ex-offenders. They work across a range of art forms including visual arts, film making, creative writing, graphic design, street dance, music and MC-ing, photography, drama and kite making. This case study focuses on two of their programmes: The Choices Project that worked with young offenders who are subject to Intensive Surveillance and Supervision Programme (ISSP), and The Restorative Justice Project that worked with young offenders who had restorative justice elements to their sentences. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: relationship and family support
Action for Prisoners' Families are running a 'Relationship and family support' seminar [23rd September, London, £35] that will look at relationship and parenting support. This seminar will help those selecting, delivering or commissioning services to make the most of opportunities offered by parenting and relationship support. Find out more and book your place here
CLINKS MEMBER’S EVENT: Redemption & Justice Awards 2014
NoOffence! has announced the 2014 Redemption & Justice Awards. The awards [1st October, London, £100] celebrate both the people who change and the people who help to make change possible, from across every sector of criminal justice. Richard Rowley, from NoOffence! explains: "The independent judges have almost completed their deliberations and winners will be announced at the ceremony. This will be the most inclusive awards ever presented and an evening to remember, you can join us as a sponsor or by attending the evening." Full details about the awards can be found here
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: supporting people with convictions
Unlock are running 'Advising with conviction' training courses [23rd October, Maidstone and 28th October, London, from £119], designed to provide front-line practitioners and advisors with a well-rounded knowledge of how to support individuals with convictions with disclosure. The primary focus of the workshop is in supporting practitioners who are either advising or supporting people with convictions into employment, volunteering and education. However, other areas of life where criminal records come up will also be explored, such as insurance, housing and travel. Find out more and book your place here
CLINKS PARTNER'S EVENT: resettlement of BAME offenders
Through our innovation grants, Clinks supported the charity Bringing Hope to produce a documentary that explores resettlement, and the transition from prison to community for Black, Asian and minority ethnic ex-offenders. The first screening of the film [17th September, Birmingham, from £17.50] will explore the real life experiences facing high-risk offenders and the challenges they face back in the community. It will give you a realistic insight into the life and journey of one of their clients, providing an honest look into the life of somebody once inside the prison system, posing the question 'does the UK really give ex-offenders a second chance?' Book your place here
PUBLICATION: evidencing poor outcomes for women and girls
'Women and Girls at Risk: evidence across the life course' is a new publication, with input from Clinks, that looks across the life course of women and girls who experience poor outcomes (offending, homelessness, prostitution and exploitation, chronic mental health and substance abuse) and highlights significant gaps in the evidence in this area. The report is critical to the development of a new Alliance of organisations which will bring together a shared narrative and create energy to take action on these issues. Looking across the life course of women and girls, this review demonstrates to the emerging Alliance the importance of having a strong gendered narrative and an understanding of the effect of inequality, violence and abuse. Download it here
PUBLICATION: resettlement of girls and young women
'Resettlement of girls and young women' is a Beyond Youth Custody research report that addresses a worrying gap in the knowledge about the effective resettlement of girls and young women. Reviewing research literature in a number of relevant areas, it cross-references evidence of what works in the resettlement of young people with what we know about the wider need of girls and young women. This iterative synthesis approach thus provides a gender-sensitive approach to inform policy and practice development in resettlement for this specific group. Download it here
