CLINKS BLOG: identifying appropriate multiple needs clients
In the second of an occasional series of blogs about Clinks’ work with the Making Every Adult Matter Coalition (MEAM), we explore some of the issues involved in identifying appropriate clients. The MEAM Approach involves working with a small number of clients who have the most complex needs and ineffective contact with existing services. One of the first steps for local partners is to agree how they are going to consistently identify which clients to work with, which is not always straightforward. Natalie Maidment, Local Development Officer North East and Isabel Livingstone, Local Development Officer South West, explore some of the issues and questions they've been grappling with. Read their blog here
CLINKS BLOG: access to arts and cultural experiences for those in prison
'Arts and cultural equality for all - including people in prison' is a blog by Arts Alliance Manager Jess Plant, in response to the Big Lottery Fund’s 'Your Voice | Our Vision' campaign. Jess points out that there needs to be funding to ensure that people in prison and those on community sentences, who are some of the most disadvantaged groups in our community, have access to arts and cultural experiences as a springboard to positive change and to bring about equality in society. Read Jess's full blog post and have your say here
CLINKS CASE STUDY: supporting young people with housing services
Community Campus 87 provide a range of housing-related services to both young people and adults across Teesside. By providing training tenancies and stable accommodation they have enabled their clients to stop their drug use, desist from crime, enter productive society and turn their lives around. This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of their approach in doing this, helping people to get back on their feet. Download the case study here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: family transport to prison
Clinks member NEPACS has launched the North East's first prison visitors transport service, a bespoke coach service for visitors to HMP Northumberland and HMYOI Deerbolt. The new coach service runs directly to the Visitors' Centres, runs along visit times, and is wheelchair and pushchair accessible. Services leave from Newcastle, Gateshead, Middlesborough and Darlington. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspections of probation work
An Inspection of Court Work, Assessment and Allocation and an Inspection of Start of Order will take place in Lincoln [week commencing 11th August] and Birmingham [week commencing 18th August]. The Start of Order inspection will take place over three days, Tuesday to Thursday and Court Work, Assessment and Allocation over two days as determined by the type of activity taking place each day in the local magistrates’ court. Local providers who work with people supervised by the NPS or CRC, or with victims, may be contacted by a probation inspector to discuss their work. If you have any queries about this, email the HMI Probation admin mailbox
FUNDING: human rights, justice and legal education
The Law Society Charity supports organisations whose work is related to the law and the legal profession, and whose activities would be likely to benefit from funds made available on behalf of solicitors. Funding is available to support projects that promote human rights, access to justice, or legal education. Grants are for £5,000 - £15,000, usually on a one-off basis, but can occasionally be spread over two or three years. The next deadline is 15th August 2014. Find out more here
FUNDING: cleaning up communities
Manchester City Council is providing £200 Clean Up Your Community grants to help local groups and schools run regular clean-up events and/or greening events in the area where they live. The scheme is open to a small group of neighbours, a community or ‘Friends of’ group, a resident association, or a school. Applicants must be based and working or living within the City of Manchester and want to make a positive difference to where they live. The grant can be used to buy tools, materials and equipment, or for any other reasonable costs directly related to carrying out a clean-up project or greening event that takes place on land that has public access within the City of Manchester. The deadline for applications is 3rd November 2014. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: punishment and forgiveness
'What’s the point of punishment if society won’t forgive?' is a Forgiveness Project event [18th August, London, £11]. Exploring society’s attitude to those who have served time will be Shad Ali, a former social worker whose family struggled to understand how he could forgive the man who attacked him. Joining him will be Jacob Dunne, who received a two and a half year prison sentence for manslaughter in 2011, and Liz Dixon, Senior Probation Officer and Restorative Justice Coordinator for London. The conversation will be led by Roger Graef, a criminologist and documentary film-maker who is a member of the Metropolitan Police Independent Advisory Group on race and an advisor to the Sentencing Council. Book your place here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: awards for community work with young people
IARS are holding their 3rd Annual Research and Youth Leadership Awards [20th August, London, free] to celebrate community achievements for a fairer society with a focus on young people. IARS places emphasis on underrepresented and vulnerable communities who are also politically disengaged and excluded by the media and society. IARS Director Dr. Theo Gavrielides said: "The nominated projects are always very inspiring and a true reflection of democracy in action; one that is delivered from the bottom up and not from centralised, well climatised offices in high ivory towers". PUBLICATION: accommodation and employment for ex-offenders
Cymorth Cymru have recently published a report exploring the role of Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) in providing accommodation and employment pathways to people who have offended. With the support of a Clinks’ Innovation grant, Cymorth Cymru held an event at Parc Prison, bringing Welsh RSLs together with individuals from across the Criminal Justice System. The report collates the findings from the event, which include barriers to provision, improving pathways, and partnerships between RSLs and the Criminal Justice System in Wales. A series of recommendations are made and the full report can be accessed here
PUBLICATION: defining complex needs
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Complex Needs and Dual Diagnosis has published its first factsheet, Defining Complex Needs. It is the first in a series of factsheets aiming to bring attention to those with multiple complex needs, including those with offending behaviour, who often find it hard to engage with services. This work has been informed by a range of stakeholders and service users via surveys, evidence sessions and written submissions. Download the factsheet here
PUBLICATION: understanding restorative justice
'Understanding restorative justice' is a new book (£10.39) by Pete Wallis that analyses how restorative justice nurtures empathy, exploring responsibility, shame, forgiveness and closure. Using case studies, the book offers a fresh angle on a topic that is of growing interest both in the UK and internationally. It may serve as a comprehensive introduction for those new to restorative justice and as a best practice guide for existing practitioners. Find out more here
