CLINKS BLOG: learning from the first year of Justice Data Lab
Last week the Ministry of Justice announced the continuation of the Justice Data Lab pilot and published the learning from the first year of the pilot. Read Jess's blog, summarising key information from the MoJ’s report, here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: closing women's prisons doesn't make sense
To mark International Women’s Day, U R Boss Young Advisor Lauren discusses government plans to close both open prisons for women (Askham Grange and East Sutton Park) and two mother and baby units (at Holloway and East Sutton Park), arguing it "doesn't make sense". This would leave only ten women’s prisons in England, meaning women will be held even further away from their families, and only one mother and baby unit, forcing pregnant prisoners, or those with very young children, to choose between keeping their babies with them or receiving visits from their other children. Read the short article here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Rehabilitation of Offenders Act
The Offender Rehabilitation Bill gained Royal Assent on 13th March and now becomes the Offender Rehabilitation Act 2014. Closely tied to the Government’s Transforming Rehabilitation plans, the Act extends supervision to offenders leaving prison after sentences of less than two years. It also introduces new requirements in the community after release, including on drug appointment and testing, and a new Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) allowing the new probation providers more flexibility as part of a community order. Although the Act does not legislate for the outsourcing of probation (as the legislation to enable this was already in place), it does include a specific duty on the Secretary of State to consider how the needs of women offenders are met under the new arrangements. More information can be found here
FUNDING: innovative new process for smaller grants
The Golden Bottle Trust seeks to make small to medium sized grants (£1,000 - £30,000 over a maximum of 3 years) to new and existing organisations to enable them to get closer to achieving their goals. They don't want you to have to shape a project to fit application criteria, and as such you don't need to complete an application form. Instead, they want you to present your case and tell them what you need in order to step up your activities or to make your organisation as effective as possible. They are looking to make grants that make a transformational difference to the organisations they support and that enable charities to take a step forward in their development and do something they were not able to do before. The deadline for submissions is 4th April. Find out more here
FUNDING: to support young people
The Shackleton Foundation provide up to £10,000 of seed funding and support to enable aspiring leaders and social entrepreneurs to establish their own ventures to help young people in challenging circumstances. Applications should explain what the leader’s vision is, and how this vision meets a clear need and benefits disadvantaged and socially marginalised young people. Find out more and apply here
AWARDS: contribution to the community
Social enterprises or charities able to demonstrate a positive impact in the local community are eligible to apply for Nectar Business Small Business Awards 2014. The awards recognise and celebrate the success, best practice, innovative ideas and outstanding achievements of small and medium-sized businesses throughout the UK, including a £2,000 cash prize for category winners. The deadline for applications is 30th April. Find out more here
AWARDS: for arts organisations
Artsmark is an award that recognises your organisation’s commitment to high quality arts and cultural education alongside that of mainstream provision. It provides a valuable auditing tool enabling you to evaluate and strengthen your arts and cultural offer and celebrate success. Applications are now open and will remain open until Friday 25th July. Artsmark strengthens youth justice provision through the arts, and acknowledges excellence in providing broad and balanced learning opportunities for young people. Artsmark also supports successful and sustainable relationships with arts and cultural organisations. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: youth justice
'Re-imagining youth justice' is a Howard League for Penal Reform conference [2nd April, London, from £135] that aims to take stock of youth justice and look to the future. Theory meets policy-making meets practice, as speakers from all three fields debate the big questions. How can we re-imagine youth justice at a time of straitened resources? What have young people themselves decided must change? What will government plans to reduce reoffending and improve resettlement mean for both young people and practitioners? Find out more and book your place here
CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: evaluating and reporting
Project Oracle's 'Evaluating and Reporting' course [29th April, London, £125] takes a detailed look at the tools and techniques you can use to measure your impact and how to analyse and report on the information you gather. It is ideal for those already conducting evaluations within their organisations. Find out more and book your place here
OFFENDER HEALTH: consultation on ill-treatment and wilful neglect
As part of the response to the Francis Report, the Government accepted the recommendation of the National Advisory Group on the Safety of Patients in England to develop a new criminal offence of ill-treatment or wilful neglect. The Department of Health and Department for Education are runnning a consultation that outlines the recommendation and the Government’s current position, and sets out their proposals for the details of the offence. Take part here
PUBLICATION: supporting homeless women
'Rebuilding Shattered Lives' is a St Mungo's report that focuses on getting the right help at the right time to women who are homeless or at risk. The report brought together a range of sectors working with women who are homeless to share understanding of the particular experiences of these women and the challenges they face, explore how organisations in different sectors are working with women to overcome these challenges, and discuss how we can better ensure women get the right help, at the right time. Find out more and download the report here
