CLINKS NEWS: arts and criminal justice mentoring
Are you looking to develop your professional skills in the arts and criminal justice sector? Are you interested in being mentored by an experienced Arts Alliance member? If so, you will be interested in Arts Alliance's pilot mentoring scheme. Expert mentors working in the arts and criminal justice sector will provide a minimum of four meetings or telephone conversations over a six month period to their mentee. The mentors will provide a range of support about using arts within the Criminal Justice System. Find out more and apply here
CLINKS NEWS: innovation grants awarded
Clinks has provided eight small grants of £1,500 to support innovative partnership working in criminal justice and community safety. We received more than 40 applications from a range of organisations with a staggering range of ideas and innovations. The successful applicants are 3VA, The Care Forum, Cymorth Cymru, Voluntary Norfolk, VAST, Voluntary Action Oldham, GAVCA, and LVSC. For more information click here
CLINKS RESOURCE: Improving your evidence evaluation helpline
As part of our on-going Improving your evidence project, Clinks and NPC have launched an evaluation helpline to provide organisations with free one-to-one support on evidence collection and evaluation. Support will be tailored to your needs and might include help to develop an evaluation strategy, advice and guidance on your current approaches and support to develop a theory of change. CLINKS NEWS: encourage prisoner self expression
Do you work with offenders in prison? Would you like to help us encourage literacy, creativity and self-expression? Our Write to be Heard creative writing awards are open for entries on 9th September. We are looking for writing that sounds good read out loud – the prize is for the winning entry to be featured in special National Prison Radio shows being broadcast in December. We are after fresh ideas and new stories from prisoner voices and we're not worried if spelling or grammar isn’t perfect. Songs, poetry, plays, children’s books, prose – all our welcome. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: new women's support services in London
Women in Prison offers advice and support for women affected by the Criminal Justice System. They have two new projects - Housing and Domestic & Sexual Violence – that sit alongside their core work. Both projects are aimed at women in, or returning to, London. The Housing Project offers dedicated housing support for women affected by the Criminal Justice System, whether in prison or in the community. The Domestic & Sexual Violence Project provides a holistic and through-the-gate related service for women. They offer ongoing support, advocacy, advice sessions and workshops. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: location of new prison announced
On Wednesday the Government set out the next stage in its prison modernisation programme, with confirmation that its planned new 2,000 place prison will be built in Wrexham, and the news that it has started feasibility work on a second large prison to be constructed in the South East of England. It has also confirmed opening dates for the new house blocks – mini-prisons – being built to create 1200 new places at four sites across England. Read the full story here

'Changing Lives Together' is NOMS' regular ezine to stakeholders, highlighting some of the excellent work that is going on in NOMS, prisons and probation. In the current issue: Askham Grange Prison joins the coffee shop revolution; London Probation Trust's mentoring partnership with Catch22 and St Giles Trust; and how a BBC radio producer is helping change young offenders' lives. FUNDING: preventing alcohol misuse in the over 50's
The Big Lottery Fund is seeking a lead partner to manage and deliver a £25 million UK-wide funding programme to influence and inform policy and practice in preventing alcohol misuse amongst older people, specifically those aged 50 and over. The successful applicant will be required to lead a partnership of organisations across the UK to deliver the aims and outcomes of the funding programme. First stage applications must be submitted by 24th October. Full details here
FUNDING: for tenant groups
Starter grants of up to £3,000 are available for tenant groups who are interested in 'Community Cashback' agreements with their landlords. A Community Cashback agreement is a voluntary deal for tenants and residents to take control of small-scale local services such as cleaning, gardening etc. Any cost savings are kept by the resident group to use for community benefit. Starter grants can be for any costs connected with setting up the deal - such as training, communication, administration, equipment and material to do the service. Find out more here
FUNDING: for music with young people
Youth Music has announced grants of up to £250,000 to support projects that provide music-making activities for children and young people, especially those young people in challenging circumstances. The deadline for applications is 3rd October. Full details here
FUNDING: to improve your website
Charities have been invited to apply for a share of £270,000 of funding from the charity website company Raising IT to improve their websites. Grants worth between £14,400 and £72,000 are available depending on the size of the charity. To be eligible, a charity must have an annual income of more than £1m and be able to pay a £10,000 set-up fee. The company said it was looking for any charity frustrated with its existing website because it was preventing it achieving its goals. CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: yoga in prison
'The Profound Benefits of Yoga and Meditation in Prison' is a Prison Phoenix Trust event [3rd October, Oxford, £5] that will present the results of recent research examining the efficacy of yoga and meditation for prisoners. This event will examine the findings, explore the implications for prisoners’ well-being and rehabilitation, and provide opportunity for discussion for those working in criminal justice and interested in the work of the Trust. CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: personality disorders
'Knowledge and understanding framework in Personality Disorder (KUF) – Awareness Level' is a Ubique Partnerships three day training course [10th October, 4th and 25th November, Birmingham, £120] aimed at all frontline workers that may come into contact with persons with a diagnosis of personality disorder. The course will: explore different perspectives about personality disorder, dispel some myths about personality disorder, and help develop understanding of how to work effectively with service users with a personality disorder. OFFENDER HEALTH: have your say on the future
NHS England is engaging with local communities, clinicians and stakeholders, about the best possible way to develop general practice for the future. NHS England wants general practice to play an even stronger role at the heart of more integrated out of hospital services that deliver better health outcomes, more personalised care, excellent patient experience and the most efficient possible use of NHS resources. OPPORTUNITY: writing competition for young people
Clinks Member Beyond Youth Custody has launched a national writing competition for young people aged 16 to 25 with experience of custody. They would like young people to tell them, in their own words, about their experiences in prison or experiences of leaving prison and some of the problems they might have faced. Entries can be anything written such as a poem, a short story or a rap and the closing date is Friday 25th October. More details about the competition and a poster can be downloaded here
