CLINKS RESOURCE: guide to desistance
‘Introducing Desistance: A Guide for Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Sector organisations’ is a new Clinks guide that aims to provide an accessible summary of some of the key themes in the desistance literature and explore the factors that can support desistance. It focuses on how the VCSE Sector can use the theory to demonstrate the success of their work supporting desistance to policy-makers, funders, commissioners, other partners and perhaps also prime providers. CLINKS EVENT: arts and OLASS 4
'Integrating arts into offender learning under OLASS 4 ' is an Arts Alliance event [24th September, London, free] that will provide an opportunity for Heads of Learning, Skills and Employment (HoLSE), educational providers and lead Governors to explore practical examples of ways that arts interventions can be strategically integrated into the offender learning journey. The event will focus on any current challenges and possible solutions in how arts can contribute to helping providers and establishments make progress with OLASS 4. We were delighted last week to welcome Ellie Cumbo as our new Policy Manager. Ellie joins us with a background in policy research and campaigning with Victim Support and the End Violence Against Women coalition. CLINKS NEWS: new North East Development Officer
Clinks is very pleased to introduce Natalie Maidment, our new Local Development Officer for the North East region. Natalie is on secondment from Voluntary Organisations Network North East (VONNE) for two years, with the support of The Northern Rock Foundation. Until recently Natalie was VONNE’s Partnership Development and Policy Officer, and her role at Clinks will be delivered in close partnership with VONNE to ensure we can provide the best possible local support for the sector. CLINKS TRAINING: Volunteering in prison

Does your organisation work with offenders in the community? Would you like to learn how to support and train staff and volunteers working with offenders in the community? Our very successful two day ‘train the trainer’ course [13th & 14th November, London, from £220] is developed from our 'Working with Offenders in the Community' resource pack and is designed to support trainers and/or volunteer co-ordinators who manage and support volunteers. CLINKS SURVEY: for organisations using art in criminal justice
Arts Alliance are collecting a snapshot of arts in criminal justice in 2013; capturing information about the work you do and looking at the potential impact of recent funding and policy changes. If you work as an arts practitioner, freelancer, or work in a prison or probation service using the arts, we’d love to hear from you. The deadline is today (Friday), and it should only take 5-10 minutes. So please support our work and take the time to fill it in here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: revised timescales for Transforming Rehabilitation
Ministry of Justice issued a notice last week announced revised schedules for the Transforming Rehabilitation process. "We anticipate that the competition will be formally launched in the second half of September, and we are committed to having new providers delivering rehabilitation services from autumn 2014." CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: new supplier events for Transforming Rehabilitation
Ministry of Justice are holding networking events for all potential providers and separate dedicated events for 2nd and 3rd tier providers over the coming weeks. There will be networking (primes with stalls set up) events in Bristol [2nd Sept] and Manchester [4th Sept] that are open to all. Further briefings events for 2nd and 3rd tier providers will be held in Weston-super-mare [3rd Sept], London [17th, 26th, 27th Sept], York [18th Sept], Manchester [19th Sept], and Birmingham [20th Sept]. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: inspection of adult offending work
HM Inspectorate of Probation will be inspecting work in York & North Yorkshire during the weeks commencing 21st October 2013 and 11th November 2013. Local providers who work with people supervised by the Probation Trust, or with victims, may be contacted by a probation inspector to discuss their work. The focus of this inspection will be 'Protecting Children'. If you have any queries about this, please contact the HMI Probation admin mailbox at admin.hmiprob@hmiprobation.gsi.gov.uk
FUNDING: volunteering in health
Grants of between £50,000 and £200,000 per annum are available for a maximum of three years for projects that focus on volunteer involvement in key health, public health and social care areas such as personal budgets, cutting smoking and encouraging healthy eating. National VCSE organisations and consortia of locality-based VCSE organisations in England are eligible to apply. The deadline for registering an interest is 27th September. Full details here
FUNDING: for health and social care
Between £5 million and £6 million is expected to be available to charities and other not-for-profit and incorporated organisations that work to improve the health and social care of people across England. Applications can be made for funding for one, two, or three years (there is no set amount but bids need to be realistic) to test and develop new ways of working in the health and social care system that will improve people's health and wellbeing, achieve excellent outcomes in health and social care and develop sustainable business models for the future. AWARDS: evidencing youth justice
Are you contributing to improving the evidence base in youth justice? The YJB Evidence Awards 2013 will award two prizes of £5,000 – one for well-designed practice, the other for well-conducted evaluation. The money is to be used to further improve intervention design and evaluation, and the winners will be announced at this year’s Youth Justice Convention, which is due to take place on the 26th and 27th November in Birmingham. The awards are open to statutory, voluntary and private sector youth justice services. Find out more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: prison resettlement challenges
'Unlocking the Potential: Resettlement Challenges at HMP Brixton' is a Prisoners Education Trust event [18th September, 7pm, HMP Brixton, £30] that features a presentation and discussion about the challenges and rewards of keeping people out of prison. The speakers at the event will be Lucy Bogue, Deputy Director, Rehabilitation Programme, Ed Tullett, Governor of Brixton Prison and Phil Chadder, Brixton’s Chaplain. There will also be contributions from serving and ex-prisoners. Refreshments will be provided by Bad Boys’ Bakery. Find out more and book your place here

PUBLICATION: briefing on Lobbying Bill
The Lobbying Bill is due for its second reading in the House of Commons on 3rd September. The Bill proposes for a wider range of activities to be regulated during an election year, that could impact on the VCSE Sector’s ability to campaign and raise awareness about important policy issues. NCVO have published a useful briefing about the Bill, read it here
RESOURCE: referring young people with learning disabilities who have sexually offended
Respond has recently launched an innovative new Circles of Support and Accountability (COSA) project working with young people with learning disabilities who have sexually offended or displayed sexually harmful behaviour. Respond’s COSA is informed by attachment theory, trauma theory, best practice in LD and a systemic approach to care, support and accountability. Trained volunteers develop a supportive relationship with the young person, with the aim of reducing their isolation and vulnerability, and preventing further harm. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has created two videos which explain how the new Update Service can benefit applicants and employers, enabling online checking that DBS certificates are up to date and a degree of portability between jobs. To find out more click here
