CLINKS BLOG: from prison to the football pitch
Clinks’ former Development Officer Patrice Lawrence has written a blog as part of an occasional series of articles called 'Family Snapshots'. These are based on interviews with prisoners or their partners and families about the impact of imprisonment on family ties. This blog focuses on Bobby. He is a gifted footballer who had the opportunity to play professionally but his opportunities were cut short by his prison sentences. He is now the founder of Hackney Wick Football Club, a project successfully uniting local people to get fit and play football in their local league. Read his story here
CLINKS EVENT: supporting women in the Criminal Justice System
How would you support specialist women’s services in the Criminal Justice System? Clinks is proposing to run a half-day, facilitated event for the women’s voluntary sector in London to develop our vision for the city and explore the needs of women in criminal justice, and how these needs can best be met. If you would like to attend, please let us know your availability for an event on the 1st February. We’re hoping to keep the administration fees as low as possible and would appreciate the offer of a room or space in which to hold the meeting. To register your interest please email helen.carter@clinks.org by the 27th January.
CLINKS EVENT: tackling multiple disadvantage
The Making Every Adult Matter Coalition along with other partners, including Clinks, is running their second national summit on tackling multiple disadvantage [8th-9th May, Milton Keynes, from £75]. Many of Clinks' members work alongside people facing multiple disadvantage. Over two days a series of workshops will be led and shaped by delegates under four key themes: drawing expertise from people with lived experience, achieving systems change, understanding and responding to diversity and fostering partnership and collaborations to achieve change. Find out more and book here
CLINKS PARTNER'S NEWS: challenges for people with multiple needs
The Making Every Adult Matter Coalition has written a short blog explaining how Universal Credit can be challenging for people with multiple needs. The blog discusses how the payment-in-arrears format, online-only forms and quickly changing individual situations can mean people are left in extreme financial difficulty for long periods of time, including those leaving prison. Read the blog here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: reducing homelessness
St Mungo’s is campaigning for MPs to debate and support the Homelessness Reduction Bill. The Bill will be debated in Parliament on 27th January. Ministry of Justice figures from 2012 show that 79 per cent of prisoners who reported being homeless before custody went on to reoffend after release. Use this form to send your MP a message reminding them of the importance of this legislation, and ask them to back it in Parliament. Fill in the form here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: relationship education
Pact is holding a morning lecture and symposium on the topic of prisoners & families [17th March, London, free]. This year’s lecture will be responding to the question ‘Is relationship education a key ingredient to prison safety and reform?'. The lecture will be given by Dr Galena Rhoades, Research Associate Professor and Associate Clinical Professor from the University of Denver. Other speakers include Dr. Samantha Callan, Parliamentary Advisor to Lord Michael Farmer and Senior Fellow with the Centre for Social Justice and Bishop Richard Moth. Admission is free to Clinks members, on a first-come, first-served basis. Read more here
CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: financing recovery services
Are you a recovery service or looking to set one up? Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust and Social Investment Business would like to hear from you. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: arts in prison
The Koestler Awards 2017 is now open for entries until Friday 14th April 2017. The Koestler Trust aims to demonstrate that the arts are beneficial to offenders, secure patients and detainees. Anyone who is currently in a UK prison, an immigration removal centre, secure hospital, children's home or on probation may enter the awards. This year’s exhibition theme is 'Inside', set by the curator Sir Antony Gormley. Entries can be from individuals or groups. Read more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: video for young people with convictions
A YouTube video aimed at young people with convictions has been launched by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CRRC) - the organisation responsible for investigating wrongful convictions. The film is called Not the End of the Road and was created by the CCRC in response to the disproportionately low number of applications it receives from young people asking the organisation to investigate their case as a potential wrongful conviction. Over the last five years, only 0.4% of applications have come from people aged 18 and under. Watch the film here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: new guidelines for transgender prisoners
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has published a learning lessons bulletin which explores the care and management of transgender individuals while in prison. It draws on recommendations from investigations into deaths in custody, as well as complaint investigations. The report discusses assigning transgender prisoners to the appropriate prison for their gender, ensuring local policies meet national standards and bullying and harassment in prison. Read more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: an inspection of probation
HMI Probation will be inspecting work in South Yorkshire during the weeks commencing 6th March 2017 and 20th March 2017. If you have any queries about this, please contact HMI Probation (Enquiries) mailbox at: HMIP.Enquiries@hmiprobation.gsi.gov.uk
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: 124,000 people in detention
The UK National Preventive Mechanism has published the results of a UK-wide detention population data mapping. This reveals that in excess of 124,000 people in the UK are detained on any given day in secure hospitals, prisons, immigration facilities, secure children's homes, police cells and military prison. They provide a breakdown of data for different types of detention across the UK and data that has not been published before on throughput into police custody and immigration short term holding facilities. Read the report here
FUNDING: standing up to extremism
The Home Office’s 'Building a Stronger Britain Together' grants have opened for 2017 funding. The programme was established last September to help deliver a key strand of the Government’s Counter-Extremism Strategy. It aims to promote and strengthen positive mainstream voices across Britain. The fund offers in-kind support up to a value of £75,000 or grants of between £1,000 and £50,000 to civil society and community organisations that are working to create more resilient communities, to stand up to extremism in all its forms and to offer vulnerable individuals a positive alternative, regardless of race, faith, sexuality, age, and gender. The deadline for applications is 6th February. Read more here
FUNDING: tackling serious and organised crime
Does your organisation work with people involved in serious or organised crime? The Serious and Organised Crime Prevent Team in the Home Office is asking for bids for funding for 2017-18 from those working in this area. The funding will support the piloting of projects which seek to prevent individuals from becoming involved in serious and organised crime, or from continuing to be involved. Previously funded projects have identified young people and women who are at risk and then offered interventions to those individuals to reduce their risk of offending. The deadline for bids is 4th March. Due to the specific nature of the funding, application packs are only available via email. For more information please contact rhiannedd.mclean@clinks.org
FUNDING: benefitting communities
The Yorkshire & Clydesdale Bank 'Spirit of the Community' Awards are now open. Registered charities, not-for-profit community organisations and constituted voluntary groups in England and Scotland are eligible to apply for funding for projects that will benefit communities where the Yorkshire & Clydesdale Bank operates. Five projects will receive an award of £5,000. The deadline for applications is 6th March. Read more here
FUNDING: Nottingham youths
Grants have been released for the European Social Fund for the Nottingham City Area within the D2N2 LEP area. Grants from a minimum of £75,000 are available to support projects that will engage marginalised 15-29 year olds and support them to re-engage with education and training. Projects must cover the Nottingham City Area and be completed no later than 31st August 2018. Applicants will need to have eligible match funding for the balance of costs from a source other than the European Union. The deadline for applications is 12th March. Read more here
