The guide has been created in collaboration with prison service staff, Community Rehabilitation Companies and voluntary sector organisations, who told us what is working well in supporting the voluntary sector’s strategic and operational engagement in prisons. It builds on positive experiences and suggests practical actions that can foster a more co-ordinated approach to partnership work.
The guide includes five good practice points for engagement so that prisons can build strong partnerships with the voluntary sector at both a strategic and operational level. The focus is on:
- Making links with the voluntary sector
- Knowing how voluntary sector work fits into prisons and how to get projects established
- Co-ordinating voluntary sector organisations in prisons
- Good communication with the voluntary sector
- Skills sharing between prison and voluntary sector staff
