Tackling inequality in the Criminal Justice System
Speakers announced!
26th November 2014 | London | free
This inspiring half-day seminar will focus on strategies and techniques for raising equality issues and achieving change. You will hear from practitioners who have championed change for a range of people facing discrimination and inequality. These are the speakers announced so far:
- Debbie Pippard, Head of Programmes at Barrow Cadbury Trust, will chair the event.
- Raheel Mohammed from Maslaha, whose 'All We Are' art project is tackling the root causes of offending among young Muslims and giving them a voice.
- Andy Holmes, Senior Prison Officer at HMP Stafford, who has set up a successful gay and bisexual men's group in the prison.
- RECOOP (speaker tbc), who advocate for the needs of older offenders, and have established older prisoners' forums in several prisons.
It is clear that in the Criminal Justice System (CJS), one size does not fit all. Without taking into account the different needs and inequalities faced by specific groups of the offender population, it is impossible to effectively reduce reoffending. However, in a climate of reduced spending, equality measures can sometimes be the first things to be cut, and it can be difficult to make progress on changing disproportionality and unfair treatment. So how do we tackle inequality in the CJS? After discussing and sharing approaches at the event, we will create a report to influence the practice of new probation providers and statutory agencies.
Places are filling fast, so book now to avoid disappointment!
