Tackling inequality in the Criminal Justice System
26th November 2014 | London | free
It is clear that in the Criminal Justice System (CJS), one size does not fit all. Without taking into account the different needs and inequalities faced by specific groups of the offender population, it is impossible to effectively reduce reoffending. However, in a climate of reduced spending, equality measures can sometimes be the first things to be cut, and it can be difficult to make progress on changing disproportionality and unfair treatment. So how do we tackle inequality in the CJS?
This inspiring half day seminar will share strategies and techniques for raising equality issues and achieving change. You will hear from practitioners who have championed change for a range of people facing discrimination and inequality, including older people; Black, Asian and minority ethnic people; lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender people; disabled people and women. Whilst discussing and sharing approaches, we will cover:
- An overview of the current issues that equality groups are facing
- Change that has been achieved; operationally, strategically and in Government policy
- Suggestions for how to raise and address equality issues
- Matters to be addressed with potential Tier 1 providers in the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms
We will create a report from the event to influence the practice of new probation providers and statutory agencies. Speakers will be announced soon, book early to secure your place!
