Children & Young Adults Intervention Worker - Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle Treatment and Recovery is an all-age community drug and alcohol service supporting local people, families and communities across Newcastle. NTaR is a collaborative service partnership led by CNTW NHS Foundation Trust with Humankind and Changing Lives. Within the partnership Humankind deliver services for children and young adults up to 25 years old with a focus on offering age appropriate services that support children and young adults to make positive choices in their lifestyle and behaviours.
Working in partnership with children and young people, families and a wide range of stakeholders that includes schools, children’s services, youth justice and other children and young people’s support services is an essential element of the service.
We have opportunities for 3 full time and 1 part time role to join the integrated service team. Based in the service’s city centre location and working across a wide range of community venues, we’re looking for people who thrive as part of a team to provide high quality care, treatment and access to opportunities for children and young people across Newcastle. These are diverse roles that range from working with children through to supporting young adults during transition to adult services.
Main duties and responsibilities:
To be part of the NTAR team supporting children, young adults and families to move forward in their journey by ensuring service interventions are delivered in accordance with NICE guidelines and best practice guidance.
Manage a service user caseload of children and young adults, reviewing on-going care and treatment (including clinical treatment for young adults), liaising closely with the full range of workers and skills within the multi-agency team.
To provide holistic support to children and young adults including the effective delivery of key service activities such as assessments, support plans, PSI delivery and structured interventions.
To ensure service assessment and engagement interventions are motivational, holistic and nurturing, and promote the development of a clear and robust support plan that includes the timely delivery of high-quality interventions.
To use innovative and creative methods to engage children and young adults into the service and ensure retention throughout their journey, including transition to adult services.
To exercise and promote the use of excellent communication and therapeutic skills when dealing with children, young adults and families.
To work closely and collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team across the service partnership and externally, providing advice and information to managers and other colleagues, through attendance at reviews, team meetings, supervision and via telephone conversations.
To ensure individual support plans promote family, carer and service user involvement and reduce substance related harm to the individual and their community, including prevention of the escalation of risk-taking behaviours.
To improve outcomes for children and families of service users by reducing the impact of drug and alcohol related harm on family life and promote positive family involvement in recovery.
To lead effective case management for allocated children and young adults, including on-going processes such as risk assessments, risk management plans and safeguarding assessments and plans.
To develop and deliver quality psychosocial interventions that meet local need across both group work and one to one formats.
To maintain targets and key performance indicators as defined by the service specification, Service Delivery Unit and as instructed by the Area Manager
To promote health improvements and contribute to the reduction of risk-taking behaviour of children, young adults and families engaging with the service.
To work collaboratively with a full range of statutory and voluntary stakeholders, promoting effective communication, positive service user experience and sharing of risks and risk management.
Provide support across a variety of outreach settings for children, young adults and families including partner premises, home visits, schools and community settings.
To provide a lead contact for specific/designated group of service users and stakeholders on behalf of the service.
In carrying out the above duties the post holder will:
Comply with all monitoring and evaluation systems, collecting and monitoring information as appropriate and provide reports when required, actively contributing to the service achieving successful service user outcomes.
Maintain accurate, up to date records and work in accordance with organisational guidelines and procedures.
Strive to reduce substance related harm to individuals and the wider community.
Comply with all aspects of Humankind’s Code of Conduct and adhere at all times to national/local and Humankind safeguarding policies.
Provide information in accordance with Humankind’s confidentiality policy to the wider team supporting service users ensuring a holistic recovery approach.
Uphold data protection legislation, including both local and formally agreed information sharing protocols and service user confidentiality agreements
Actively participate in supervision and provide evidence of achieving performance targets alongside other supervision requirements as detailed within Humankind’s supervision policy.
Seek to improve personal performance, contribution, knowledge and skills.
Participate in appraisal and learning and development processes.
Promote service best practice and successes through contributing to Humankind internal and external communications.
Recognise personal and professional boundaries and work within Humankind’s clinical governance framework at all times.
The post holder will be required to work flexibly across operational sites and within an agreed number of hours to maintain appropriate service provision. This will include evening and weekend working.
Provide a full range of service interventions in an outreach and in-reach capacity including satellite offices and partnership co-location venues with other organisations.
Contribute to maintaining safe systems of work and a safe environment.
Comply with all relevant policies and procedures.
To report all problems and incidents to a Humankind manager at the earliest opportunity.
Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and spirit of the post.
Person Specification - Essential criteria:
Experience/Qualification in therapeutic interventions (e.g. MI, CBT, MST)
A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with drug/alcohol users or children and young adults with multiple needs
Experience of delivering 1-1 and group therapeutic interventions
Able to represent and advocate for Humankind in a professional and positive manner
Self-motivated, ability to use own initiative and able to work as a team to achieve effective outcomes for service users
Effective time management and organisational skills and the ability to manage competing work demands
Good communication skills e.g. active listening, case notes, report writing, information sharing.
Ability to maintain and work within professional boundaries
Knowledge of completing comprehensive service user assessments, support plans and risk assessments
Knowledge of the impact of substance use on individuals, families and the wider community
Knowledge of safeguarding adult and child protection policies

Person Specification - Desirable criteria:
Experience of working with children, young adults and families
Experience of using/inputting on to Management Information Systems
Direct experience of service delivery to a substance misusing service user group
Ability to understand Key Performance Indicators and ensure these are met
Full driving licence and regular access to a car
